A national audit of gonorrhoea management.

A national audit of gonorrhoea clinic policy and case management was carried out by postal survey on behalf of the National Audit Group of the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV. Ninety-three clinics out of a total of 278 (33%) and 1324 cases were included. The results showed that both the auditable outcome measures listed in the National Guideline for the Management of Gonorrhoea in Adults and the evidence-based outcome standards recently published by Low et al. were broadly being met.

UK National Audit of Early Syphilis Management. Clinics audit: screening for and management of early syphilis.

Data were provided by 131 clinics, and 56% of cases were managed in clinics in the London regions in 2003. Three clinics (2%) do not routinely screen new patients for syphilis, and 28 clinics (21%) do not routinely screen 'rebook' patients who have had a new partner. More than 80% of clinics routinely conduct cardiovascular and neurological examinations, although chest radiography is only performed by 50% of clinics and lumbar puncture by 13%. Only 19 (14%) clinics indicated not routinely using the recommended procaine penicillin G (PPG) regimen or one- or two-dose benzathine penicillin G (BPG

A re-audit of the management of gonorrhoea.

A re-audit of the management of gonorrhoea was undertaken in 2014. Six out of nine auditable outcomes were met in the second audit (2014) compared with three out of eight in the first audit (2012). The new measures that were introduced following the original audit may have helped to improve outcomes. However, electronic patient records were introduced in December 2012. Documentation was much improved with the use of patient record templates and this has contributed considerably to the improved outcomes.

Epistaxis 2016: national audit of management.

BACKGROUND: Epistaxis is a common condition that can be associated with significant morbidity, and it places a considerable burden on our healthcare system. This national audit of management sought to assess current practice against newly created consensus recommendations and to expand our current evidence base. METHODS: The management of epistaxis patients who met the inclusion criteria, at 113 registered sites across the UK, was compared with audit standards during a 30-day window. Data were further utilised for explorative analysis. RESULTS: Data for 1826 cases were uploaded to the databa

UK National Audit of Early Syphilis Management. Case notes audit: diagnosis and treatment.

A national audit of 781 early syphilis cases presenting during 2002-03 in UK genitourinary medicine clinics was conducted in late 2004, organized through the Regional Audit Groups. Data were aggregated by region and National Health Service trust, allowing practice to be compared between regions, between trusts within regions, as well as to national averages and the UK National Guidelines. An enzyme immunoassay was used to diagnose 695 (89%) cases (regional range 18-100%). Use of a non-treponemal test was not recorded for 44 (6%) cases. Dark ground microscopy was used in the diagnosis of only 8

National audit on the management of bullous pemphigoid.

BACKGROUND: Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an autoimmune, subepidermal, blistering condition that typically affects elderly people. AIM: To undertake a national clinical audit based on standards derived from the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) clinical guidelines on the management of BP. METHODS: In 2018, BAD members were invited to submit data for five consecutive adults with BP per centre, who had been under hospital supervision for at least 12 months, in a national audit over an 11-week period. RESULTS: In total, 123 responders from 120 hospitals provided data for 524 cases. Diag

The British Orthopaedic Oncology Management (BOOM) audit.

AIMS: Most patients with advanced malignancy suffer bone metastases, which pose a significant challenge to orthopaedic services and burden to the health economy. This study aimed to assess adherence to the British Orthopaedic Oncology Society (BOOS)/British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) guidelines on patients with metastatic bone disease (MBD) in the UK. METHODS: A prospective, multicentre, national collaborative audit was designed and delivered by a trainee-led collaborative group. Data were collected over three months (1 April 2021 to 30 June 2021) for all patients presenting with MBD. A da

The role of surgical audit in improving patient management; nasal haemorrhage: an audit study.

BACKGROUND: Nasal bleeding remains one of the most common Head & Neck Surgical (Ear Nose and Throat [ENT]/Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery [OMFS]) emergencies resulting in hospital admission. In the majority of cases, no other intervention is required other than nasal packing, and it was felt many cases could ideally be managed at home, without further medical interference. A limited but national telephone survey of accident and emergency departments revealed that early discharge practice was identified in some rural areas and urban departments (where adverse socio-demographic factors resulted in

AN AUDIT OF THE MANAGEMENT OF ACUTE PAIN IN CHILDREN.

AIM: To evaluate clinical management of acute pain with respect to pain assessment, scoring and timing of analgesia and whether appropriate supportive medicines were prescribed alongside strong opiates. A previous pain audit found dosing of analgesia was appropriate but did not assess clinical management against pain scores. Our paediatric guideline does not currently stipulate guidance on appropriate time frames to administer analgesia and re-assess pain. Standards were developed with a multidisciplinary team to audit against. METHODS: Data were collected over two weeks on paediatric wards e

National audit of the management of peritonsillar abscess.

An anonymous postal survey of 200 consultants was used to audit the current prevalent practices in the management of quinsy in the UK; 101 responded. The findings reveal that on average an otolaryngology department treats 29 cases per year, the vast majority (94%) on an inpatient basis. The main initial treatment was needle aspiration combined with intravenous antibiotics. Interestingly, those departments treating more than 20 cases a year are more likely to use needle aspiration, while departments in England and Wales use significantly more incision and drainage than those in Scotland. Surgical management of intractable epistaxis: audit of results.

We have audited our results after changing the management practice in patients with intractable epistaxis. These patients are offered trans-nasal endoscopic sphenopalatine artery diathermy with or without anterior ethmoid artery diathermy instead of conventional surgical procedures. During the first year after the change in practice, 145 patients were treated as inpatients for epistaxis. Ten patients (seven per cent) required a surgical procedure under general anaesthesia due to the recurrent nature of bleeding. All 10 patients had endoscopic sphenopalatine artery diathermy, whereas in four pa

Cardioversion of atrial arrhythmias: audit of anticoagulation management.

Patients undergoing cardioversion for chronic atrial fibrillation should receive anticoagulation for three weeks before and four weeks after the procedure. Patients with atrial flutter and acute atrial fibrillation are also at risk of thromboembolic complications, so they too should be anticoagulated for cardioversion. Of the 36 acutely admitted patients who were cardioverted, 18 were in atrial fibrillation and 18 in atrial flutter. All except three of those in fibrillation were anticoagulated with heparin before cardioversion, but only seven received warfarin after cardioversion. Of those in

Clinical audit of ankle fracture management in the elderly.

INTRODUCTION: Ankle fractures in the osteoporotic patient are challenging injuries to manage, due to a combination of poor soft tissue, peripheral vascular disease and increased bone fragility, often resulting in more complex fracture patterns. I aim to audit current practice and introduce change by producing recommendations to help improve longer-term functional outcomes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective 3-week audit was conducted reviewing results of ankle fracture management in 50 patients aged between 50 and 80 years. Patients admitted for either manipulation under anaesthesia (MUA)/

An audit of the management of acute asthma in accident and emergency.

It is estimated that 3.4 million people suffer from asthma in the UK, with 640,000 having the condition in a severe or very severe form (Action on Smoking and Health, 2002). Asthma also accounts for 1,250 deaths annually (De Keyser, 2002). Between 1980 and 1990 the prevalence of asthma in males increased by 114 per cent and in females by 165 per cent (Respiratory Alliance, 2003).

Audit as a hospital management tool: a qualitative analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze, from the managers perspective, the factors that favor and hinder the use of auditing as a management tool in hospitals. METHOD: A qualitative, descriptive study, based on the Critical Incident Technique, conducted in a general hospital in the interior of São Paulo, Brazil. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with managers (March-June/2023). The incidents were organized into situation-behavior-consequence and subjected to content analysis, with thematic categorization. RESULTS: A total of 34 critical incidents were identified, highlighting 41% (n=14) of aspects th

An audit of COPD: diagnosis and management in general practice.

INTRODUCTION: COPD is a spectrum of disorders primarily caused by smoking and characterised by progressive, not fully reversible airflow obstruction with a forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1)/forced vital capacity (FVC) ratio <0.7. METHODS: From November 2016 to March 2017 we audited patients with COPD in five general practices in Hull and East Riding, UK. We looked at deviation from the locally agreed guidelines. We extracted data on severity, exacerbations, medication and eosinophil count. RESULTS: We assessed 1088 records. Median age was 70.9 years; 577 (53%) were male. About two-third
