Modern investigations in biology often require the efforts of one or more groups of researchers. Often these are groups of specialists from various scientific fields who generate and share data of different formats and sizes. Without modern approaches to work automation and data versioning (where data from different collaborators are stored at different points in time), teamwork quickly devolves into unmanageable confusion. In this review, we present a number of information systems designed to solve these problems. Their application to the organization of scientific activity helps to manage th

Perioperative outcomes research using anesthesia information management systems (AIMS) is an emerging research method that has not been comprehensively reviewed. This review reports an initial analysis of the use of AIMS for perioperative patient outcomes research from articles published between January 1980 and January 2013. Perioperative patient outcomes research based on AIMS has increased greatly since 2001. Although risk stratification studies involving large study populations were most commonly reported, AIMS were also used to report a rare life-threatening anesthesia-related complicatio

During a 4-year study a geographic information system (GIS) risk model was constructed for predicting the relative risk of schistosomiasis in Kafr El-Sheikh governorate, Egypt. A 1-year 1990-1991 time series on diurnal temperature difference (dT) prepared from the advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) sensor on the NOAA-11 satellite was used to develop a regional risk model for the Nile delta based on thermal-hydrological domains. A May 15, 1990 Landsat TM scene (path 177, Row 38) was used to develop a local 'village-scale' environmental risk model based on higher resolution satelli

BACKGROUND: This paper addresses the importance of timely and robust information systems that underpin emergency response decision-making, as evidenced during the COVID-19 pandemic in the WHO European Region. Recognizing the relevance of these systems, we propose the strengthening of national emergency response information management systems (ERIMS) within the broader digital health information system (HIS) framework. We aim to develop and present an innovative assessment tool designed to evaluate and assist in the strengthening of ERIMS, contributing to a more resilient and effective emergenc

Background: Uniform interpretation of digital health messages is important to achieve semantic interoperability of electronic health information systems (eHIS). Whereas international digital health terminologies such as ICD, LOINC and SNOMED-CT exist, their design considerations regarding health processes, data collected, and technologies, among others do not necessarily match Uganda's eHIS contextual needs. Objective: This research aimed to design a process that could be used to contextualise international digital health terminologies for Uganda's eHIS. Methods: The Design Science approach wa

CONTEXT: Damages and loss of life sustained during an earthquake results from falling structures and flying glass and objects. To address these and other problems, new information technology and systems as a means can improve crisis management and crisis response. The most important factor for managing the crisis depends on our readiness before disasters by useful data.
AIMS: This study aimed to determine the Earthquake Information Management System (EIMS) in India, Afghanistan and Iran, and describe how we can reduce destruction by EIMS in crisis management.

Health Management Information System was introduced methodically and enforced with ruthless punctuality in Maharashtra State from April 1981. It has paid excellent dividends so far as the implementation of the National Leprosy Control Programme is concerned. Key indicators have been fixed for new case detection, bacteriological examination, regularity of treatment and screening of old patients for activity status. Monitoring of these activities is done regularly and a feed back is provided. Marks are assigned for each kidney indicator and ranking is done based on the achievement of targets by

OBJECTIVES: Mass spectrometry-based steroidomics combined with machine learning (ML) provides a potentially powerful approach in endocrine diagnostics, but is hampered by limitations in the conveyance of results and interpretations to clinicians. We address this shortcoming by integration of the two technologies with a laboratory information management systems (LIMS) model.
METHODS: The approach involves integration of ML algorithm-derived models with commercially available mathematical programming software and a web-based LIMS prototype. To illustrate clinical utility, the process was applie

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is a contagious and potentially fatal infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, leading to widespread clinical infections. To improve the prevention, control, management, and monitoring of tuberculosis, standardized data collection with consistent definitions is essential. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a minimum data set (MDS) as the initial phase in creating a tuberculosis information management system.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This applied-descriptive and cross-sectional study was performed in 2023. First, a comprehensive literature review was

Many cases of malignant hyperthermia triggered by volatile anesthetic agents have been described. However, to our knowledge, there has not been a report describing the precise changes in physiologic data of a human suffering from this process. Here we describe a case of malignant hyperthermia in which monitoring information was frequently and accurately captured by an anesthesia information management system.

Spill response managers on inland waterways have indicated the need for an improved decision-support system, one that provides advanced modeling technology within a visual framework. Efforts to address these considerations led the authors to develop an enhanced version of the Spill Management Information System (SMIS 2.0). SMIS 2.0 represents a state-of-the-art 3D hydrodynamic and chemical spill modeling system tool that provides for improved predictive spill fate and transport capability, combined with a geographic information systems (GIS) spatial environment in which to communicate propagat

Laboratory information management systems (LIMSs) are an important tool for public health laboratory operations and serve the data needs of public health programs. A comprehensive and interoperable LIMS allows laboratory staff to ensure quality management of laboratory operations. It also provides timely client care through direct access to diagnostic data and tracks important public health trends. Here, we describe the implementation and adaptation of HIV-related LIMSs in 3 countries supported by PEPFAR (President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief)-namely, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe-to suppo

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the health equity gap between and within countries. Western countries were the first to receive vaccines and mortality was higher among socially deprived, minority and indigenous populations. Surprisingly, many sub-Saharan countries reported low excess mortalities. These countries share experiences with community organization and participation in health. The aim of this article was to analyse if and how this central role of people can promote a successful pandemic response.
METHODS: This analysis was partly based on local and national experiences shar

BACKGROUND: Accurate routine surveillance data are essential for malaria control and elimination. However, the multistep reporting process used in most malaria-affected countries can introduce discrepancies between health facility registers and national health management information systems, often based on the District Health Information System 2 (DHIS2). This study assessed the concordance of malaria rapid diagnostic test (RDT) data across facility registers, monthly summary forms (MSFs) and the DHIS2 in four sub-Saharan countries.
METHODS: In 2023, we conducted an observational study in Ben
