Non-Alcohol Hand Sanitiser Gels with Mandelic Acid and Essential Oils.

Antimicrobial hand gels have become extremely popular in recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Frequent use of hand sanitising gel can lead to dryness and irritation of the skin. This work focuses on the preparation of antimicrobial acrylic acid (Carbomer)-based gels enhanced by non-traditional compounds-mandelic acid and essential oils-as a substitute for irritating ethanol. Physicochemical properties (pH and viscosity), stability and sensory attributes of the prepared gels were investigated. Antimicrobial activity against representative Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and yeast

Production of R-(-)-mandelic acid from mandelonitrile by Alcaligenes faecalis ATCC 8750.

R-(-)-Mandelic acid was produced from racemic mandelonitrile by Alcaligenes faecalis ATCC 8750. Ammonium acetate or L-glutamic acid as the carbon source and n-butyronitrile as the inducer in the culture medium were effective for bacterial growth and the induction of R-(-)-mandelic acid-producing activity. The R-(-)-mandelic acid formed from mandelonitrile by resting cells was present in a 100% enantiomeric excess. A. faecalis ATCC 8750 has an R-enantioselective nitrilase for mandelonitrile and an amidase for mandelamide. As R-(-)-mandelic acid was produced from racemic mandelonitrile in a yiel

Mandelic Acid-Mediated Enantiomeric Enrichment of a Resorcinarene-Based Dissymmetric Coordination Capsule.

Resorcinarene-based coordination capsules provide rigid, well-defined cavities that can exhibit helicity under chiral induction, a feature that has previously been exploited using axially chiral biphenyl compounds and tartaric acid derivatives. However, these approaches generally require well-designed templates tailored to the capsule structures. In this study, it was discovered that commercially available mandelic acid functions as an effective and operationally simple additive for inducing chirality in an empty-cavity Cu(I) capsule without the requirement for templates. Chiral induction was

Biphasic recognition chiral extraction: A novel method for separation of mandelic acid enantiomers.

This article reports a new chiral separation method-biphasic recognition chiral extraction for the separation of mandelic acid enantiomers. Distribution behavior of mandelic acid enantiomers was studied in the extraction system with O,O'-di-benzoyl-(2S,3S)-4-toluoyl-tartaric acid (D-(+)-DTTA) in organic phase and beta-CD derivatives in aqueous phase, and the influence of the types and concentrations of extractants and pH on extraction efficiency was investigated. Hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-beta-CD), hydroxyethyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HE-beta-CD), and methyl-beta-cyclodextrin (Me-beta-CD)

Biomonitoring Equivalents for interpreting mandelic and phenylglyoxylic acid in urine resulting from exposures to styrene and ethylbenzene.

Styrene and ethylbenzene are chemicals used in the plastic and rubber industry and are present in cigarette smoke. Regulatory authorities have developed toxicological reference values to conduct risk assessments for potential exposures. The extent of exposures to ST and ETB can be assessed via biomonitoring of shared metabolites mandelic acid and phenylglyoxylic acid in urine. The metabolism of ST and ETB and the excretion of MA and PGA in urine following controlled inhalation exposures in humans has been studied. In this evaluation, we derive Biomonitoring Equivalents (BEs) for interpretation

Vanillin analog--vanillyl mandelic acid, a novel specific inhibitor of snake venom 5'-nucleotidase.

Snake venom 5'-nucleotidase (5'NUC) plays a very important role in envenomation strategies; however, apart from its modulation of hemostatic functions, its other pharmacological effects are not yet well characterized. Several studies have used specific inhibitors of enzyme toxins as a biochemical or pharmacological tool to characterize or establish its mechanism of action. We report here for the first time vanillin mandelic acid (VMA), an analog of vanillin, to potentially, selectively, and specifically inhibit venom 5'NUC activity among other enzymes present in venoms. VMA is much more potent

Styrene metabolism in man: gas chromatographic separation of mandelic acid enantiomers in the urine of exposed persons.

D- and L-mandelic acid are separated by gas chromatography as isopropyl ester or isopropyl ester-isopropyl urethane on capillary columns, coated with Chirasil -Val. For its determination in urine the isopropyl ester procedure gives better results because other components of the urine do not cause interference. Thus D- and L-mandelic acid in the urine of exposed workers could be detected and verified by means of GC/MS. Occupational styrene exposure near the MAK-value (100 ppm) results in a L/D-enantiomer-ratio in urine of nearly 1.5.

Optimization of arylacetonitrilase production from Alcaligenes sp. MTCC 10675 and its application in mandelic acid synthesis.

Alcaligenes sp. MTCC 10675 has been isolated from soil sample using enrichment method and has nitrilase catalytic system which is highly specific for the hydrolysis of arylaliphatic nitriles. Optimization of culture conditions using response surface methodology and inducer-mediated approach enhanced arylacetonitrilase production significantly (2.4-fold). Isobutyronitrile acted as an effective inducer for the induction of arylacetonitrilase, and it is highly specific for arylacetonitriles (phenyl acetonitrile and mandelonitrile). Arylacetonitrilase has no effect on its relative velocity (V r) u

Toxicity studies and anti-arthritic effect of mandelic acid (2-hydroxy -2-phenyl acetic acid) using in vitro and in vivo techniques.

The major concern to search for new anti-arthritic drugs is primarily to prevent systemic complications and to maintain quality of life. As these drugs are prescribed for long duration so the objective is to ensure their safety in terms of toxicity. By keeping in view this concept, the present study was investigated to determine new anti-arthritic potential using in-vitro and in-vivo methods. The in-vitro tests comprised of protein denaturation (BSA and egg albumin) and Human Red Blood cell (HRBC) membrane stabilization assays at 50-6400μg/mL, for in-vivo testing, formaldehyde-induced arthriti

Novel Mandelic Acid Derivatives Containing 1,3,4-Oxadiazolyl Thioether for Enhancing Antibacterial Potential against Ralstonia solanacearum.

Bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum causes severe crop losses, yet effective agrochemicals remain scarce. Here, we designed a T3SS-targeting antivirulence agent that attenuates the pathogen virulence without inhibiting growth. Two series of mandelic acid and 2-amino-2-phenylacetic acid derivatives containing 1,3,4-oxadiazolyl thioethers were synthesized. High-throughput screening identified W40 (2-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-hydroxy-N-(5-((4-methylbenzyl)thio)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)acetamide), which strongly inhibited hrpY expression without affecting bacterial growth. Synthesis of arylglycine and mandelic acid derivatives through carboxylations of α-amido and α-acetoxy stannanes with carbon dioxide.

Incorporation reactions of carbon dioxide (CO(2)) with N-Boc-α-amido and α-acetoxy stannanes were developed using CsF as a mild tin activator. Monoprotected α-amido stannanes could be used, and the corresponding arylglycine derivatives were obtained in moderate-to-high yields under 1 MPa (10 atm) of CO(2) pressure. α-Acetoxy stannanes also underwent carboxylation to afford mandelic acid derivatives in excellent yields under ambient CO(2) pressure. Both transformations enabled the synthesis of α-tertiary and α-quaternary carboxylic acid derivatives. In addition, the chirality of (S)-N-tert-buty
