Congenital mandibular coronoid process hyperplasia and associated diseases.

Coronoid process hyperplasia (CPH) is an oral and maxillofacial surgical disease that can result in restricted jaw movement due to an enlarged and elongated mandibular coronoid process. It is characterized by the painless progressive restriction of unilaterally or bilaterally mouth opening. Clinically, unexplained bilateral CPH is less common and therefore often overlooked or misdiagnosed, and coronoidectomy can be very effective on improving mouth opening. Currently, the exact etiology and mechanism of congenital CPH have not yet been fully understood, but it is generally believed to be genet

Mandibular Condylar Cartilage in Development and Diseases: A PTHrP-Centric View.

The mandibular condylar cartilage (MCC) is a dual-function component of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), acting as both articular cartilage for jaw movement and growth cartilage for vertical growth of the mandibular condyle. Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) plays a critical role in orchestrating chondrogenesis in the long bone, and its importance is also highlighted in both MCC development and TMJ function. Here, we discuss the role of PTHrP in the development, growth and diseases of the MCC. PTHrP is a key morphogen in the MCC that regulates chondrogenesis by promoting chondrocyt

Mandibular and dental manifestations of Gaucher disease.

Gaucher disease is a systemic lysosomal storage disorder with a high prevalence among Ashkenazi Jews. It is caused by an inherited deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme glucocerebrosidase. Common signs and symptoms include hepatosplenomegaly, anemia, thrombocytopenia, and skeletal involvement. Oral and dental manifestations are less commonly seen. These manifestations are often asymptomatic, although they may be detected by routine dental x-rays. There are several case reports and a few larger series published describing patients with Gaucher disease who have mandibulo-maxillofacial involvement.

Mandibular Reconstruction in a Patient With Rosai-Dorfman Disease.

OBJECTIVE: The Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare disorder known as sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy which affects other organs besides the lymphatic nodes. The most frequent clinical presentation is the skin involvement, but the most serious one is when the central nervous system is compromised. There are not clinical cases in the literature reporting the mandibular involvement and its management. The aim of this study is to report the case of a patient with this disease, her treatment, and her follow-up. STUDY: A 32-year-old woman with RDD, who underwent a right mandibule

Morbidity and mortality of mandibular resection for malignant disease.

Twenty-nine per cent of patients undergoing mandibular resection had an entirely uncomplicated postoperative course. Local complications occurred in 54 per cent and systemic complication in 35 per cent. Increasing the extent of resection or an additional procedure, such as radical neck dissection, increased the local complication rate. Operation in fully irradiated tissue produced an increase in the proportion of life-threatening complications. Systemic complications were responsible for 80 per cent of the postoperative deaths.

Mandibular trabecular bone structure in adults with Crohn's disease.

OBJECTIVES: Crohn's disease (CD) is associated with reduced bone mineral density. The main objective of the present study was to assess the mandibular trabecular bone quality and to compare our findings with those among sex- and age-matched controls. Furthermore, background variables known to be significant for bone density were compared. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Intraoral radiographs of 49 Crohn's patients (23-61 years old) and 49 age- and sex-matched controls were evaluated. Mandibular trabecular pattern was classified as either sparse, mixed dense plus sparse, or dense. Furthermore, two comp

[Habitual mandibular dislocation in two patients with Parkinson's disease].

There have been few case reports of mandibular dislocation in Parkinson's disease (PD) so far. We experienced habitual mandibular dislocation in two PD patients. They were a 74-year-old woman and a 56-year-old man, who were both graded V by Hoehn and Yahr's staging and had a 13- and 14-year history of PD, respectively. Remarkable retroflexion and rigidity of the neck was observed in both patients. Anterior dislocation of the jaw occurred without any special cause. Once the jaw was dislocated, it required unexpected power to reduce the dislocation against the rigidity. In a case of postencephal

Mental nerve dysfunction: a symptom of diverse mandibular disease.

Paraesthesia and anaesthesia of the mental nerve may result from a variety of pathological conditions, and in persistent cases of orofacial sensory disturbance thorough clinical assessment, including CT scanning, is vital to exclude underlying systemic or neoplastic disease. This paper presents three patients with right mental nerve dysfunction, and reviews the aetiology of mental nerve paraesthesia and anaesthesia.

Mandibular Gorham-Stout Disease With Implanted Fibular Resorption.

Gorham-Stout disease is an extremely rare disease characterized by progressive massive osteolysis with different clinical manifestations. The pathology is characterized by vascular proliferation, leading to destruction and resorption of the bone matrix, but the exact etiology is unknown. It can occur in any part of the body, with few reports of cases involving the maxillofacial region. Herein, the authors report a case of Gorham-Stout disease of the mandible, which started by affecting the alveolar bone and progressed to the mandibular marginal branches and even to the implanted vascularized f
