Mandible can be affected by a great variety of neoformations, like aneurysmal bone cyst, odontogenic myxoma, CGCG (Central Giant Cell Granuloma), GCT (giant cell tumor), sarcoma, ameloblastoma, lymphoma, ossifyng fibroma, odontogenic mixoma, granuloma, arteriovenous malformations and Schwannoma. Occasionally is not possible to find clinical or radiological distinctive findings so is usefull to perform additional exams, think about rare disease and perform an explorative surgical treatment which can be adapted to the intraoperatory findings. This attitude may help to reduce overtreatment but al

OBJECTIVE: We report a new approach to benign parapharyngeal space tumours: a single, subcondylar mandibular osteotomy.
METHOD: Case report and review of the world literature concerning parapharyngeal space access and the various types of mandibular osteotomy.
RESULTS: The use of a single, subcondylar mandibular osteotomy achieves good exposure and satisfactory aesthetic and functional results, using a simple, easily performed technique that is fast and has minimal morbidity. In addition, this technique preserves the submandibular gland and avoids lip-splitting and post-operative intermaxill

BACKGROUND: When assessing sharply delineated bone lesions of the mandibular angle on X-rays, numerous diagnoses must be considered. The static bone cavity (Stafne's bone cavity, SBC) is a harmless lingual bone depression of the mandibular angle that usually does not require any treatment. It is essential to differentiate this bone deformity from other lesions that may require treatment.
CASE REPORT: The 22-year-old patient was referred for further diagnosis and therapy after osteolysis of the mandible was noticed on a panoramic view (PV). The location and size of the lesion was typical of SB

Odontogenic cutaneous sinus tracts (OCSTs) are an uncommon consequence of chronic dental infection in which inflammatory drainage extends from a periapical source through bone and soft tissues to the skin surface. Although odontogenic infections typically present with intraoral symptoms such as pain, swelling, or vestibular drainage, chronic lesions may occasionally manifest as extraoral nodules, cysts, or draining sinuses. Because many patients experience little or no dental discomfort, these lesions are frequently misdiagnosed as dermatologic, infectious, or neoplastic conditions. The report

Spindle cell lipoma (SCL) is a benign lipomatous neoplasm typically located in the posterior neck and back of older males. It presents as a well-circumscribed mass in the buccal mucosa, tongue, floor of the mouth or hard palate. There are only two case reports of SCL in the gingiva and alveolar ridge. Here, we report a case of SCL in the mandibular mucogingival junction of a 68-year-old male. Clinical, histopathological and immunohistochemical findings are presented. Although oral SCL is rare, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of spindle cell neoplasms occurring in the oral

Numb chin syndrome is a rare sensory neuropathy of the mental nerve characterized by numbness, hypoesthesia, paraesthesia, and very rarely pain. Dental causes, especially iatrogenic ones, maxillofacial trauma, or malignant neoplasm are etiologic factors for this rare syndrome. Many malignant and metastatic neoplasms are causing this syndrome, like primary osteosarcoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and mandibular metastasis of primary carcinoma of breast, lung, thyroid, kidney, prostate, and nasopharynx. Haematological malignancies like acute lymphocytic leukaemia, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma,

Odontogenic tumours are uncommon neoplasms in domestic animals, mostly solitary and locally infiltrative, but rarely metastatic. We report the case of a 13-year-old neutered male cat presented with a mandibular gingival neoformation. A computed tomography scan revealed an irregular neoformation with marked post-contrast enhancement, associated with lysis of the incisive bone and mandibular symphysis. Histologically, the oral mucosa and mandibular bone were infiltrated by a neoplasm consisting of a mixed population of odontogenic epithelium admixed with bundles of odontogenic ectomesenchyme, mu

This paper reports surgical treated 66 cases of parapharyngeal space neoplasms. They consist of primary 52 and secondary 14 cases, which were 59 benign and 7 malignant tumors. The surgical procedures which have been used are oral approach in 5 cases, the parotid approach in 5 cases, the cervical approach in 47 cases, the cervical approach with mandibular swing in 7 cases and the postaurical C incision approach in 2 cases. The procedures and indications of the cervical approach or (and) its combination with mandibular swing are outlined. It is considered that these two surgical procedures can p

BACKGROUND: The parotid tissue can give rise to a large variety of benign and malignant neoplasms. The objective of this study was to describe the management and outcome of parotid gland tumours over a 15-year period.
METHOD: The records of consecutive patients treated by parotid gland excision from January 1995 to December 2008 were reviewed retrospectively. Data recorded were age, gender, history, physical findings, surgical procedure, fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB), final pathological diagnosis and complications.
RESULTS: The vast majority of patients (306) had benign neoplasms, and

BACKGROUND: Neoplasms of the salivary gland account for 3% of all head and neck tumors; most of these occur in the parotid gland and are benign; 80% of them are pleomorphic adenomas. Benign neoplasms of the salivary gland are rare in children compared with adults. Keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT) is considered the second most frequent neoplasm of all odontogenic tumors after the ameloblastoma. In the present report, we introduce the unusual presentation of a child with a simultaneous pleomorphic adenoma of the right hard palate and a KCOT of the left mandibular angle.

Microstomia may result from surgical treatment of orofacial neoplasms, cleft lips, maxillofacial trauma, burns, radiotherapy, or scleroderma. A maximal oral opening that is smaller than the size of a complete denture can make prosthetic treatment challenging. This clinical paper presents the prosthodontic management of a total edentulous patient with microstomia. Sectional mandibular and maxillary trays and foldable mandibular and maxillary denture were fabricated for the total edentulous patient.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic keratocyst is one of the most common benign odontogenic neoplasms with a high recurrence rate. Its resection has the potential to lead to mandibular segmental defects. In this case report, we describe a patient with odontogenic keratocyst who underwent radical resection using a novel distraction osteogenesis (DO) method to reconstruct mandibular segmental defect.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a 19-year-old woman with odontogenic keratocyst of the mandible that recurred after multiple curettages and eventually necessitated radical resection. Mandibular s

Whilst the special anatomical features of the mandible may make radiographic comparison of jaw lesions with similar conditions in other bones more difficult, the changes that occur in respect to the mandibular canal and the teeth may in themselves aid diagnosis. Benign cysts and neoplasms generally cause a displacement of the mandibular canal, but its cortical plate remains intact, Severe infections and malignant tumours result in an irregular erosion of bone and loss of the sclerotic outlines of the canal.

Schwannomas (neurilemmomas) are benign neoplasms derived from Schwann cells of the neurilemma and appear most frequently on the auditory nerve or peripheral nerves of the skin. They arise in the oral and maxillofacial region infrequently, and very rarely in the center of the jaw. We herein present a case of a rare mandibular intraosseous schwannoma derived from the main trunk of the inferior alveolar nerve in a 33-year-old man. Fusiform expansion in the mandibular canal was observed and a mass showing the target sign in the mandibular canal was confirmed on T2-weighted and Gd contrastenhanced

Neoplastic masses were evaluated in the rostral region of the mandible of three young adult cattle. In all three cases, the masses were macroscopically large, firm, ulcerated, infiltrative, whitish and solid, and led to tooth displacement and loss. Radiographically, the neoplastic masses were intraosseous and radiolucent with foci of radiopacity. Loss of radiopacity due to bone necrosis was seen in the mandibular bone adjacent to the neoplasms. Histologically, well-differentiated, infiltrative non-encapsulated mesenchymal neoplastic proliferation replaced the mandibular bone and extended to th

Osteoma is a slow-growing benign osseous neoplasm. The mandible and paranasal sinuses are the most commonly affected sites in the maxillofacial region. Clinically, this neoplasm may be silent for years without any symptoms and diagnosed only when it becomes big enough or observed coincidentally during radiological investigations. In this paper, a case of peripheral mandibular osteoma in a 66-year-old male patient is presented. The patient was referred to our ENT clinic with a suspected parotid neoplasm because of a swelling in the right preauricular region.

BACKGROUND: The intraosseous schwannoma (IS) is a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor postulated to arise de novo or from nerve fibers in preexisting nutrient canals. ISs are uncommon and comprise less than 1% of neoplasms originating in bone. We herein present two cases of mandibular schwannomas-the first case was a 66-year-old female with a four-month history of pain and pressure associated with an anterior mandibular radiolucency, and the second case was an asymptomatic 12-year-old female with separate radiolucencies of her mandibular symphysis and right posterior mandible. Carotid body paraganglioma is a neuroendocrine neoplasm of the mandibular region. Due to its prominent stromal alternations, carotid body paraganglioma is a great emulator of other neoplasms in the head and neck region especially in metastatic tumors and its definite diagnosis is a great challenge. To the best of our knowledge, the most frequently reported variant is sclerosing and paraganglioma with a prominent lymphoplasmacytic infiltration is extremely rare. We report a rare case of a carotid body lymphoplasmacytic paraganglioma presented as a single asymptomatic mass of the right mandibula

Plasma cell neoplasms involving the jaws are rare, with mandibular involvement representing an uncommon initial manifestation of systemic multiple myeloma (MM). Their nonspecific clinical and radiographic presentation often mimics more common odontogenic and inflammatory conditions, making early diagnosis challenging. We report the case of an 81-year-old man who presented with pain and swelling over the left posterior mandible of two months' duration. Clinical examination revealed diffuse swelling involving the left mandibular body and angle. Orthopantomography (OPG) demonstrated a well-define
