An 82-year-old male presented with rash, burning, and itching on his knees that had started 4 days after the local application of Mandragora Radix sap for 3 consecutive days. A dermatological examination revealed erythematous, edematous, and scaly plaque lesions on the patient's knees. An open application test with M. Radix was performed, and the patient was diagnosed with allergic contact dermatitis due to M. Radix. Mandragora species, which belong to the Solanaceae family, have sedative, aphrodisiac, emetic, analgesic, and anesthetic properties. To the best of our knowledge, only one case of

After mentioning the botanic characteristics of mandragora, its territorial distribution, morphological characteristics and the toxicological properties of its alkaloids, a clinical case of accidental mandragora poisoning is reported. The case was successfully treated with atropinic block antagonists, namely cholinesterase inhibitors. Apart from its serious symptomatology, mandragora poisoning also involves considerable metabolic commitment of liver and kidney, which present evident signs of disturbance. Information about these and other insidious plants should be spread to prevent such cases

Plant-based remedies have been employed since ancient times to manage and prevent a wide range of diseases. Background: Their bioactive constituents provide natural alternatives to synthetic anti-inflammatory drugs, often with reduced toxicity and multiple biological benefits. Mandragora autumnalis, a medicinal plant rich in secondary metabolites, has not been extensively investigated for its anti-inflammatory properties. Methods: The anti-inflammatory activity of Mandragora autumnalis ethanolic extract (MAE) was evaluated using in vitro biochemical assays, including heat-induced protein denat

Mandrakes (Mandragora spp., Solanaceae) are known to contain tropane alkaloids and have been used since antiquity in traditional medicine. Tropane alkaloids such as scopolamine and hyoscyamine are used in modern medicine to treat pain, motion sickness, as eye pupil dilators and antidotes against organo-phosphate poisoning. Hyoscyamine is converted to 6β-hydroxyhyoscyamine (anisodamine) and scopolamine by hyoscyamine 6β-hydroxylase (H6H), a 2-oxoglutarate dependent dioxygenase. We describe here a marked chemo-diversity in the tropane alkaloid content in Mandragora spp. M. officinarum and M. tur

INTRODUCTION: People in Greece, especially those living in rural areas, frequently consume various plants and herbs as a vegetable meal or as a herbal remedy, which can lead to a number of adverse reactions. These two case reports resulted in a prolonged hospitalisation due to severe and persistent supraventricular tachycardia caused by a vegetable meal.
CASES PRESENTATION: These case reports describe two cases of accidentally use of Mandragora Officinarum identified within the same Greek family, which resulted in hospitalisation. A 47-year-old Greek Caucasian woman and a 48-year-old Greek Ca

In this study, the targeted phytochemical profiles and multi-target biological activities of Mandragora autumnalis L. and Spartium junceum L. were evaluated using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), antioxidant, enzyme inhibition, and antimicrobial assays. LC-MS/MS analysis showed that M. autumnalis predominantly contained low-molecular-weight phenolic acids, particularly protocatechuic acid (0.6850 µg/mg), whereas S. junceum was richer in flavonoids and isoflavonoids, especially genistein (1.8280 µg/mg) and cynaroside (1.5240 µg/mg). M. autumnalis showed stronger antiox

Anesthetic and analgesic practices during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance are presented from a translation of the relevant sections of the Canon of Medicine by Avicenna (980-1037) one of the most widely read and authoritative textbooks of the period. Avicenna described tracheotomy, oropharyngeal intubation and a method for clearing upper airway secretions for the treatment of stridor and respiratory distress. He also identified certain plants with pharmacological action such as mandragora or nightshade, opium and henbane and gives various recipes for inducing both anesthesia and analgesia

Herbal plants were an essential component of the healing process in ancient medicine. Although only limited evidence documents the practice of dental extractions, a review of major medical works from ancient Greece and Rome demonstrates that conservative approaches predominated. A survey of the work of Celsus, Scribonius Largus, Dioscorides, Galen, Oribasius, and Aurelianus show that numerous plants-such as Hyoscyamus, mandragora, poppy, gall, pine, and pomegranate-were frequently employed to treat dental pain and gingival inflammation. These same herbal remedies reappeared throughout the medi

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Past practices of compound drugs from different plant ingredients enjoyed remarkable longevity over centuries yet are largely dismissed by modern science as subtherapeutic, lethal or fanciful.
AIM OF THE STUDY: To examine the phytochemical content of a popular medieval opiate drug called the "Great Rest" and gauge the bioavailability and combined effects of its alkaloid compounds (morphine, codeine, hyoscyamine, scopolamine) on the human body according to modern pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic parameters established for these compounds.

BACKGROUND: Plant life is extremely diverse, with a great deal of geographic and seasonal variation. Consequently, the range of reported adverse reactions is large, and there are important differences worldwide in the incidence and prevalence of these reactions. Systemic ingestion of some plants containing furocoumarins can cause erythema, edema, vesicle and bulla formation and later hyperpigmentation, after exposure to sunlight. They may at times exhibit clinical manifestations that mimic angioedema, and rarely progress to necrosis. This condition is named phyto-phototoxic reaction.

Although anaesthesia was discovered in 1846, pain relief had been used for many years previously. Opium, mandragora, and Indian hemp amongst others have been used since the earliest times as alluded to by many of the classical writers. The use of refrigeration anaesthesia is known to have been recommended a millennium ago although it never had much usage. Very soon after the introduction of ether anaesthesia, it was recommended for military use and the first use by the American forces was in Buena Vista early in 1847 and then again at Vera Cruz. Pirogoff taught and used ether anaesthesia on ac

Drug abuse is one of the most important threats to human beings today, leading to disability and even early death. In the past, opium had only therapeutic uses, but now, drug addiction is one of the major public health problems in Iran. Opium and its derivatives are the most commonly used illicit drugs in this country. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the treatment strategies of opium addiction from the perspective of Persian medicine. In this narrative review, the search was conducted using appropriate keywords in the authoritative books of Persian medicine documentations of da

The theme of suicide appears several times in ancient Greek literature. However, each such reference acquires special significance depending on the field from which it originates. Most of the information found in mythology, but the suicide in a mythological tale, although in terms of motivation and mental situation of heroes may be in imitation of similar incidents of real life, in fact is linked with the principles of the ancient Greek religion. In ancient drama and mainly in tragedies suicide conduces to the tragic hypostasis of the heroes and to the evolution of the plot and also is a tool
