Myoclonic involuntary movement associated with chronic manganese poisoning.

We report a 17-year-old man showing myoclonic involuntary movement (IVM) associated with chronic manganese (Mn) poisoning. The patient, a welder, showed myoclonic IVM mainly in the right upper and lower extremities, elevated levels of Mn in the blood and hair and high-intensity signals in the globus pallidus on T1-weighted MR images. Chelation therapy resulted in improvement of the myoclonic IVM and MRI abnormalities. This is the first report of Mn poisoning characterized by myoclonic IVM without parkinsonism.

[Occupational neurotoxicology due to heavy metals-especially manganese poisoning].

The most hazardous manganese exposures occur in mining and smelting of ore. Recently, the poisoning has been frequently reported to be associated with welding. In occupational exposure, manganese is absorbed mainly by inhalation. Manganese preferentially accumulates in tissues rich in mitochondria. It also penetrates the blood brain barrior and accumulate in the basal ganglia, especially the globus pallidus, but also the striatum. Manganese poisoning is clinically characterized by the central nervous system involvement including psychiatric symptomes, extrapyramidal signs, and less frequently

[Manganese poisoning due to use of Chien Pu Wan tablets].

A patient developed a severe chorea whilst taking Chien Pu Wan pills. At examination only a high blood level of manganese (3 times the normal value) was found. Chemical analysis of these Chinese herbal pills showed that each pill contained 14 micrograms of manganese. By taking 3 to 5 pills a day, our patient was receiving 42 to 70 micrograms of manganese over and above the normal absorbed quantity of 60-90 micrograms daily. Because the chorea developed during the use of these pills and resolved when the blood levels of manganese went down, and because the high manganese blood levels were the o

[Follow-up study after enteral manganese poisoning: clinical, laboratory and neuroradiological findings].

Manganese intoxication is an unusual, severe form of intoxication. This report deals with a patient now 80 years old who accidentally ingested a solution of potassium permanganate for a period of at least 4 weeks 14 years ago. Since then, the patient suffers from a mild parkinsonian syndrome and distally accentuated polyneuropathies. Psychiatric disorders, especially demential or depressive symptoms, were not observed. Manganese analysis of his hair still shows a clear increase in manganese concentration. The MRI of his brain showed no pathological changes, in particular none of those often de

Treatment of manganese and lead poisoning with sodium para-aminosalicylic acid: A contemporary update.

Sodium para-aminosalicylic acid (PAS-Na) treatment for manganese (Mn) intoxication has shown efficacy in experimental and clinical studies, giving rise to additional studies on its efficacy for lead (Pb) neurotoxicity and its associated mechanisms of neuroprotection. The difference between PAS-Na and other metal complexing agents, such as edetate calcium sodium (CaNa2-EDTA), is firstly that PAS-Na can readily pass through the blood-brain barrier (BBB), and complex and facilitate the excretion of manganese and lead. Secondly, PAS-Na has anti-inflammatory effects. Recent studies have broadened t

Effects of Calcium and Manganese on Sporulation of Bacillus Species Involved in Food Poisoning and Spoilage.

Spores are resistant against many extreme conditions including the disinfection and sterilization methods used in the food industry. Selective prevention of sporulation of Bacillus species is an ongoing challenge for food scientists and fermentation technologists. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of single and combined supplementation of calcium and manganese on sporulation of common pathogenic and food spoilage Bacillus species: B. cereus, B. licheniformis, B. subtilis and B. coagulans. Sporulation of Bacillus vegetative cells was induced on sporulation media supplemented with

Delayed cognitive and psychiatric symptoms following methyl iodide and manganese poisoning: Potential for misdiagnosis.

This paper describes two patients who were exposed to toxic substances in the workplace, but for whom diagnosis proved difficult, particularly in case 2. Case 1 was exposed to methyl iodide and case 2 to manganese. Poisoning was characterised by delayed onset of symptoms following exposure and symptom progression after cessation of exposure. The clinical consequences of exposure to these substances include cerebellar and Parkinsonian symptoms followed by the development of cognitive impairment and the late appearance of psychiatric disturbances. Both cases were evaluated by physicians with lit

[A patient with parkinsonism presenting hyperintensity in the globus pallidus on T1-weighted MR images: the correlation with manganese poisoning].

We report a 55-year-old woman who developed symptoms resembling parkinsonism. Her psychiatric symptoms in the early stage, cervical dystonia and tremor increasing on movement were consistent with manganese poisoning. Manganese levels were elevated to 1.5 micrograms/l in the serum (normal; 0.3-1.1 micrograms/l) and to 1.4 micrograms/l in the urine (normal; less than 1.2 micrograms/l). Intravenous infusion of calcium disodium editate (CaEDTA; chelating agent) was followed by the marked excretion of manganese (27.3 micrograms/l) in the urine. These findings support manganese poisoning. Manganese

Pt nanoparticles immobilized on a cobalt-doped Zif8 manganese tetraphenylporphyrin bentonite chitosan composite as a durable and poison-tolerant catalyst for ethanol electrooxidation.

In this research, a rationally designed multifunctional catalyst, denoted as Pt/Zif8-Co@MnTPP/Bnt-CH, was successfully synthesized. This catalyst integrates platinum nanoparticles within a cobalt-doped Zif8 metal-organic framework, along with manganese tetraphenylporphyrin (MnTPP) immobilized onto a bentonite-chitosan (Bnt-CH) support. The unique architecture of Pt/Zif8-Co@MnTPP/Bnt-CH exploits the high surface area and structural robustness of the Co-doped Zif8 framework, the electron-mediating function of MnTPP for promoting multi-electron transfer, and the dispersive benefits of the Bnt-CH

Synergistic effect of facet engineering and dual active sites in manganese cerium titanium mixed oxide nanotubes on boosting nitrogen oxide removal performance and resistance to sulfur dioxide and water poisoning.

In industrial flue gas containing SO2 and H2O, metal oxide catalysts undergo severe deactivation due to the deposition of (NH4)2SO4/NH4HSO4 and metal sulfates. Therefore, developing catalysts with satisfactory SO2 and H2O tolerance remains a major challenge. In this study, a hollow Mn0.05Ce0.05TiOx-T (MnCeTiOx-T) catalyst is constructed via an in situ co-growth method, achieving a morphological transition from nanoparticles to nanotubes, which enables precise regulation of microstructure and surface properties. Characterization results showed that the synergistic effect of the unique nanotube

Research progress of Mn-based low-temperature SCR denitrification catalysts.

Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is a efficiently nitrogen oxides removal technology from stationary source flue gases. Catalysts are key component in the technology, but currently face problems including poor low-temperature activity, narrow temperature windows, low selectivity, and susceptibility to water passivation and sulphur dioxide poisoning. To develop high-efficiency low-temperature denitrification activity catalyst, manganese-based catalysts have become a focal point of research globally for low-temperature SCR denitrification catalysts. This article investigates the denitrificati

On the Role of Manganese in Photosynthesis: Kinetics of Photoinhibition in Manganese-deficent and 3-(4-Chlorophenyl)-1, 1-dimethylurea-inhibited Euglena gracilis.

Euglena gracilis (Klebs) cultures were grown under conditions where limitation in supply of manganese limited chlorophyll content much more than growth. Although the initial rates of photosynthetic oxygen evolution were not affected by the level of manganese, photoinhibition in high intensity light was markedly influenced. All cultures showed first order kinetics for photoinhibition, with the half-time exponentially related to the Mn concentration in the medium. Treatment with 3-(4-chlorophenyl)-1, 1-dimethylurea (CMU) also increased the rate of photoinhibition. Manganese-deficient cells were

[A case of welder presenting with parkinsonism after chronic manganese exposure].

A 56-year-old welder working for 30 years developed postural instability and writing clumsiness since October, 1998. Neurologic findings revealed dystonia of the bilateral shoulders and distal four limbs as well as parkinsonism such as masked face, bradykinesia, rigidity, and retropulsion. Brain MRI showed hyperintensity lesions on T1-weighted images in the bilateral globus pallidus, midbrain, pontine tegmentum, dentate nucleus and cerebral white matter, which reduced in size and density after ten months. The diagnosis of manganese poisoning was made by the high manganese levels of both serum

Recent progress of low-temperature selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 over manganese oxide-based catalysts.

Selective catalytic reduction with NH3 (NH3-SCR) was the most efficient approach to mitigate the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx). Although the conventional manganese oxide-based catalyst had gradually become a kind of principal catalyst for the low-temperature NH3-SCR reaction, there were still numerous defects. The growing demands for extensive operation temperature scope, strong SO2 tolerance, and excellent catalytic activity had boosted the development of novel manganese oxide-based catalysts. In this review, three forms of manganese oxide-based catalysts were introduced in detail, includ
