[A statistical approach to Yatabe-Guilford personality inventory and manifest anxiety scale of the elderly].

In nursing, if we know an elderly person's mental condition, and that which does not make him/her too tired, this method can be very useful. Using this method we predicted the MAS score from scores of Y-G scales. We obtained the MAS score results by the following formula: MAS score not equal to 0.31 X Lack of objectivity +0.41 X Inferiority feelings -0.15 X Ascendance +0.34 X Y-G Nervousness +0.30 X Y-G Depression +9.54.

[Relationship between anxiety and physical traits of facial expressions].

The purpose of this study is to investigate correlations between anxiety and physical traits of facial expressions. In this study, subjects were divided into two groups on the basis of MAS (manifest anxiety scale), and were taken pictures under three different conditions. In Analysis I, we examined how facial expressions differ between high-anxiety and low-anxiety groups. The results showed that facial expressions differed between two groups especially in mouth, left half of the face, and asymmetry of the face. In Experiment I and II, we investigated whether human beings could identify one's a

An examination of worry in relation to anxious responding to voluntary hyperventilation among adolescents.

This study examined the association between worry and fearful responding to a 3-min voluntary hyperventilation procedure. Participants were 160 adolescents (71 females) between the ages of 12 and 17 years (M=14.92 years). After accounting for the significant effects of state anxiety and anxiety sensitivity, results indicated that pre-challenge levels of worry indexed by the Penn State Worry Questionnaire-Child Version predicted post-challenge anxiety and intensity of panic symptoms. Results are discussed in terms of the role of worry in relation to panic-relevant emotional vulnerability among

Children and adolescents who stutter: Further investigation of anxiety.

PURPOSE: Despite the greatly increased risk of social anxiety disorder in adults who stutter, there is no clear indication of the time of onset of this disorder in childhood and adolescence. The purpose of this study was to explore this issue further using the Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale (RCMAS), so that appropriate interventions can be developed prior to adulthood. This is the first time the RCMAS has been completed by children younger than 11 years. Using the same test for both school-age children and adolescents can potentially identify when anxiety starts to develop from age

Differential diagnosis of odontophobic patients using the DSM-IV.

Categories of extreme anxiety for dental treatment were derived using DSM-IV psychiatric criteria. A sample of 40 men and 40 women patients with extreme dental anxiety were initially evaluated with Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS), Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-T) and Geer Fear Scale (GFS). Patients all had DAS scores > or = 15 indicating extreme dental anxiety and were further evaluated with clinical interviews, Dental Fear Survey (DFS), Dental Beliefs Survey (DBS) and Mood Adjective Checklist (MACL). Results showed that 46% of 80 patients complained mainly of powerlessness and embarrassment about

Evaluation of the psychometric properties of two short forms of the social interaction anxiety scale and the social phobia scale.

The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale and Social Phobia Scale are widely used measures of social anxiety. Using data from individuals with social anxiety disorder (n = 435) and nonanxious controls (n = 86), we assessed the psychometric properties of two independently developed short forms of these scales. Indices of convergent and discriminant validity, diagnostic specificity, sensitivity to treatment, and readability were examined. Comparisons of the two sets of short forms to each other and the original long forms were conducted. Both sets of scales demonstrated adequate internal consistency

Worry and chronic pain patients: a description and analysis of individual differences.

Patients with chronic pain often report negative and aversive rumination about pain and its consequences. Little is known about how and why patients with chronic pain worry. This study provides a description of worrying by chronic pain patients. Eighteen female and 16 male chronic pain patients reported, over a 7-day period, their experience of pain-related and non-pain-related worry. Results indicated that, in comparison with non-pain related worry, worry about chronic pain is experienced as more difficult to dismiss, more distracting, more attention grabbing, more intrusive, more distressing

The relation between anxiety sensitivity and depression in children and adolescents referred for anxiety.

Research conducted with adult samples suggests that anxiety sensitivity is positively related to depression (Otto et al., 1995, Journal of Anxiety Disorders, 10, 117-123). The Childhood Anxiety Sensitivity Index (CASI, Silverman et al., 1991, Journal of Clinical Child Psychology, 20 162-168) was used in this study to provide an examination of the relation between anxiety, anxiety sensitivity, and depression in a sample of children and adolescents (N = 234) referred for anxiety disorders. A significant correlation between depression and anxiety sensitivity was found. This relation remained stat

[State of bullying in a geriatric hospital].

Recently, reports of bullying and beatings among school children has brought these problems to the public attention. Unfortunately similar problems exist among the aged and institutionalized patients in geriatric hospitals, e.g., covert teasing and bullying of the weak. Therefore, the present status of bullying or being bullied in our geriatric hospital was analyzed and their backgrounds studied to develop clinical countermeasures against bullying. Results of this study were as follows; 1. Nineteen percent of patients were victims of bullying, and patients who had performed the bullying were 3

Determinants of anxiety and depression among pheochromocytoma patients: A case-control study.

Phaeochromocytomas are catecholamine-producing neuroendocrine tumors that may manifest in many ways, specifically as sustained or paroxysmal hypertension. Data, including data from mental status screening, were prospectively collected from suspected patients. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale was used as a screening tool to identify abnormal mental status. Results showed phaeochromocytoma patients were more likely to experience anxiety and depression. For future phaeochromocytoma treatment, early screening for anxiety and depression should be recommended.

Cardiac vagal control as a prospective predictor of anxiety in women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Low cardiac vagal control (CVC) has been associated with state and trait anxiety and anxiety spectrum disorders. Studies indicate that diagnosis and treatments for breast cancer may be associated with anxiety. The current study examined whether CVC prospectively predicted a trajectory of change in anxiety following breast cancer diagnosis. Forty-three women diagnosed with non-metastatic breast cancer completed the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale and the Perceived Stress Scale, and a 5-min resting electrocardiographic (ECG) segment was recorded. Self-report measures were completed approximately e
