Marinomonas algae sp. nov. and Marinomonas phycocola sp. nov., two novel bacteria isolated from marine algae.

Two novel bacterial strains, designated as 2405UD66-6T and 2405UD68-3T, were isolated from marine algae collected in the Republic of Korea. Both strains were Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, motile, rod-shaped and oxidase-positive. Optimal growth occurred at 28 °C and pH 7.0, with NaCl concentrations of 3.0-4.0% (w/v) for strain 2405UD66-6T and 2.0-3.0% (w/v) for strain 2405UD68-3T. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and phylogenomic analysis based on draft genome sequences revealed that strains 2405UD66-6ᵀ and 2405UD68-3ᵀ belong to the genus Marinomonas. Phylogenomic

Fimsbactin Siderophores From a South African Marine Sponge Symbiont, Marinomonas sp. PE14-40.

Low iron levels in marine habitats necessitate the production of structurally diverse siderophores by many marine bacterial species for iron acquisition. Siderophores exhibit bioactivities ranging from chelation for iron reduction in hemochromatosis sufferers to antimicrobial activity either in their own right or when coupled to known antibiotics for targeted delivery or for molecular imaging. Thus, marine environments are a sought-after resource for novel siderophores that could have pharmaceutical or industrial application. The fimsbactins A-F (1-6) are mixed catechol-hydroxamate siderophore

Hydrocarbon degradation strategy and pyoverdine production using the salt tolerant Antarctic bacterium Marinomonas sp. ef1.

One of the most concerning environmental problems is represented by petroleum and its derivatives causing contamination of aquatic and underground environments. In this work, the degradation treatment of diesel using Antarctic bacteria is proposed. Marinomonas sp. ef1 is a bacterial strain isolated from a consortium associated with the Antarctic marine ciliate Euplotes focardii. Its potential in the degradation of hydrocarbons commonly present in diesel oil were studied. The bacterial growth was evaluated in culturing conditions that resembled the marine environment with 1% (v/v) of either die

Heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification characteristics and antibiotic resistance of two bacterial consortia from Marinomonas and Halomonas with effective nitrogen removal in mariculture wastewater.

Heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HNAD) characteristics and antibiotic resistance of two bacterial consortia, Marinomonas communis & Halomonas titanicae (MCH) and Marinomonas aquimarina & Halomonas titanicae (MAH), and their single isolates (MC, MA, and H) were determinated in this study. When cultured in sole and mixed N-source media (NH4+-N and/or NO2--N of 10 mg/L), MCH and MAH exhibited greater efficiency and stability of inorganic-N removal than single isolates, and these strains preferred to remove NH4+-N by simultaneous HNAD in mixed N-source media. Meanwhile, 45%-70%

An in silico, in vitro and in vivo investigation of indole-3-carboxaldehyde identified from the seawater bacterium Marinomonas sp. as an anti-biofilm agent against Vibrio cholerae O1.

Biofilm formation is a major contributing factor in the pathogenesis of Vibrio cholerae O1 (VCO1) and therefore preventing biofilm formation could be an effective alternative strategy for controlling cholera. The present study was designed to explore seawater bacteria as a source of anti-biofilm agents against VCO1. Indole-3-carboxaldehyde (I3C) was identified as an active principle component in Marinomonas sp., which efficiently inhibited biofilm formation by VCO1 without any selection pressure. Furthermore, I3C applications also resulted in considerable collapsing of preformed pellicles. Rea

[Gram-negative eubacteria isolated from the water, molluscs and algae of the Black Sea].

Microorganisms strains (384) have been isolated from water, algae and molluscs collected in the Karadag reserve and the village of Katsiveli (Black Sea shore of the Crimea); 81 of the above strains are gram-negative oxidase-positive rods which require sodium ions for their growth. A group of nonfermenting mobile bacteria deprived of arginine dihydrolase have been distinguished among the latter; as to their physiological and biochemical properties and sensitivity to some antibiotics these bacteria were referred to Alteromonas, Marinomonas, Pseudoalteromonas genera.

The invisible threats of sunscreen as a plastic co-pollutant: Impact of a common organic UV filter on biofilm formation and metabolic function in the nascent marine plastisphere.

Plastic debris in marine environments serves as a substrate for microbial colonisation, forming biofilms known as 'plastispheres'. Also accumulated on plastic debris are co-pollutants including UV-protective organic UV-filters from sunscreens, which likely interact with this niche through their lipophilicity. Despite their widespread use and environmental accumulation, the influence of UV-filters on plastisphere composition and function has never been investigated. This study therefore investigates, for the first time, how co-pollution - specifically by an organic UV-filter - impacts the compo

Development of a cold-adapted enzymatic cascade system for in situ value-added conversion of milk.

The global prevalence of lactose intolerance presents a major nutritional challenge, severely limiting milk consumption. In this study, a cold-adapted enzymatic cascade was developed for in-situ lactose-to-lactulose conversion. Molecular dynamics-based screening identified a novel cellobiose 2-epimerase (CE), Papo-CE, exhibiting high cold activity and rapid inactivation above 70 °C. Subsequently, semi-rational engineering of a cold-adapted Marinomonas mediterranea D-mannose isomerase (MmMI) was conducted, which resulted in a mutant M1 (MmMI/F242N/G375W/P373T) with 4.2-fold increase in isomeriz

Precipitation of minerals by 22 species of moderately halophilic bacteria in artificial marine salts media: influence of salt concentration.

Precipitation of minerals was shown by 22 species of moderately halophilic bacteria in both solid and liquid artificial marine salts media at different concentration and different Mg2+-to-Ca2+ ratio. Precipitation of minerals was observed for all the bacteria used. When salt concentration increased, the quantity and the size of bioliths decreased, the time required for precipitation being increased. The precipitated minerals were calcite, magnesian calcite, aragonite, dolomite, monohydrocalcite, hydromagnesite and struvite in variable proportions, depending on the bacterial species, the salini

Isolation and characterization marine bacteria capable of degrading lignin-derived compounds.

Lignin, a characteristic component of terrestrial plants. Rivers transport large amounts of vascular plant organic matter into the oceans where lignin can degrade over time; however, microorganisms involved in this degradation have not been identified. In this study, several bacterial strains were isolated from marine samples using the lignin-derived compound vanillic acid (4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoic acid) as the sole carbon and energy source. The optimum growth temperature for all isolates ranged from 30 to 35°C. All isolates grew well in a wide NaCl concentration range of 0 to over 50 g/L, w

A peptide-binding domain shared with an Antarctic bacterium facilitates Vibrio cholerae human cell binding and intestinal colonization.

Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent of the disease cholera, is responsible for multiple pandemics. V. cholerae binds to and colonizes the gastrointestinal tract within the human host, as well as various surfaces in the marine environment (e.g., zooplankton) during interepidemic periods. A large adhesin, the Flagellar Regulated Hemagglutinin A (FrhA), enhances binding to erythrocytes and epithelial cells and enhances intestinal colonization. We identified a peptide-binding domain (PBD) within FrhA that mediates hemagglutination, binding to epithelial cells, intestinal colonization, and facilit

Microbial Diversity and Hydrocarbon-Oxidizing Bacteria in Coastal Waters and Sands Contaminated by the Fuel Oil Spill in the Black Sea.

In 2024, an accident involving two tankers in the Kerch Strait resulted in the release of approximately 2400 tons of fuel oil into the Black Sea, causing significant contamination of seawater and the coastal zone. This study presents the first microbiological and molecular-ecological assessment of prokaryotic community composition and hydrocarbon-oxidizing bacteria (HOB) in coastal seawater and sand near Anapa (Russian Federation) following the spill. The taxonomic composition of nine samples was analyzed using high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes (V3-V4 regions), identifying Bacteria

Potential role of alginate in marine bacteria-yeast interactions.

The ability of microorganisms to decompose brown algae has attracted attention. This study aims to clarify the characteristics of marine microbial communities in which prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms interact via the metabolism of brown algae carbohydrates. Amplicon-based microbiome analysis revealed the predominance of the genera Marinomonas and Vibrio in seawater and seaweed samples mixed with alginate and mannitol, which are the primary carbohydrates in brown algae. Three Vibrio species and Candida intermedia were isolated via alginate enrichment culture. Although C. intermedia di

Potential hydrocarbon-degrading microorganisms in Baltic Sea sediments.

The spill of crude oil and other petroleum derivatives comprises the majority of ocean pollution and leads to acute and chronic damage to exposed marine organisms and coastal ecosystems. Some bacteria and fungi are known to biodegrade petroleum hydrocarbons in terrestrial and aquatic environments. In this study, sediment samples from the Baltic Sea, collected near an oil terminal, and from the Curonian Lagoon strait, an area under high anthropogenic and shipping pressure, were explored as a source of microorganisms with potential for hydrocarbon degradation. Next-generation sequencing showed t

CRISPR-Cas: Converting A Bacterial Defence Mechanism into A State-of-the-Art Genetic Manipulation Tool.

Bacteriophages are pervasive viruses that infect bacteria, relying on their genetic machinery to replicate. In order to protect themselves from this kind of invader, bacteria developed an ingenious adaptive defence system, clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR). Researchers soon realised that a specific type of CRISPR system, CRISPR-Cas9, could be modified into a simple and efficient genetic engineering technology, with several improvements over currently used systems. This discovery set in motion a revolution in genetics, with new and improved CRISPR systems being
