Marrubium vulgare L.: A Phytochemical and Pharmacological Overview.

Marrubium vulgare is a plant with high bioactive potential. It contains marrubiin, a labdane diterpene that is characteristic for this genus, as well as a complex mixture of phenolic compounds. According to numerous studies, M. vulgare acts as a good antioxidant agent, and due to this, it could potentially be useful in treatments of cancer, diabetes mellitus, and liver diseases. In addition, its anti-inflammatory, wound-healing, antihypertensive, hypolipidemic, and sedative potential are discussed. Apart from that, its antimicrobial activity, especially against Gram+ bacteria, fungi, herpes si

Phytochemical Analysis and Trypanocidal Activity of Marrubium incanum Desr.

The rationale inspiring the discovery of lead compounds for the treatment of human parasitic protozoan diseases from natural sources is the well-established use of medicinal plants in various systems of traditional medicine. On this basis, we decided to select an overlooked medicinal plant growing in central Italy, Marrubium incanum Desr. (Lamiaceae), which has been used as a traditional remedy against protozoan diseases, and to investigate its potential against Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT). For this purpose, we assayed three extracts of different polarities obtained from the aerial par

Antioxidant and antigenotoxic properties of compounds isolated from Marrubium deserti de Noé.

In our continual course toward the valorization of traditionally used endemic flora through the analysis of its chemobiodiversity, the phytochemical analysis of aerial parts of Marrubium deserti de Noé was undertaken. Dichloromethane and methanol extracts led to the isolation of terpenoid derivatives among which two were new labdane diterpenes named marrulibacetal A and desertine, respectively. Six of them were known compounds (a mixture of the isomers cyllenin A and 15-epi-cyllenin A, marrubiin, marrulactone, marrulibacetal and β-stigmasterol) and seven known phenolic compounds were also isol

Hepatoprotective activity of white horehound (Marrubium vulgare) extract against cyclophosphamide toxicity in male rats.

The hepatoprotective activity of Marrubium vulgare against cyclophosphamide toxicity in Wistar rats was evaluated. Adult male rats were divided into 4 groups of 6 each: a control group, a group injected with cyclophosphamide (150 mg·kg(-1)) for 3 days, a group orally given a M. vulgare aqueous extract ((500 mg of dry leaves)·kg(-1)·day(-1)) for 30 days then treated with cyclophosphamide, and a group receiving only M. vulgare for 30 days. After 33 days of treatment, activities of alanine amino transferase (ALAT), aspartate amino transferase (ASAT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and alkaline phos

The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of hexane (HEXA), chloroform (CHLORO), ethyl acetate (EA) and total alcoholic (T. ALCOH) extracts of Marrubium alysson in hypercholesterolemic-fed rabbits were evaluated. Hypercholesterolemia was induced in male rabbits by high cholesterol diet (HCD) (350 mg/kg) for 8 weeks. Hypercholesterolemic rabbits were allocated into groups, treated with simvastatin (SIM 5 mg/kg), different extracts of M. alysson at two doses of 250, 500 mg/kg. A normal control group and an HCD control one were used for comparison. Lipid profile, as well as oxidized low densi

Anti-inflammatory and antiarthritic properties of Marrubium vulgare aqueous extract in an animal model.

This study aimed to investigate the potential anti-inflammatory properties of aqueous extract of Marrubium vulgare (AEMV) using various animal models. Several inflammatory models including xylene-induced ear edoema, carrageenan-induced paw edoema, and Freund's adjuvant-induced arthritis were employed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of AEMV. LC-MS/MS of AEMV revealed that the major component was Marrubiin, a diterpenoid lactone. AEMV demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory effects in all animal models tested. It effectively reduced ear and paw edoema induced by xylene and carrageen

Marrubium vulgare and Withania somnifera are used in folk medicine of several countries. Many researches showed that they are used for the treatment of variety of diseases due to their antioxidant effects. The present aim of this study was to evaluate the antihepatotoxic and antioxidant activities of the both extracts against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced hepatic damage in rats. Both extracts were given orally in a dose of 500 mg/kg/day for 4 weeks along with CCl4 started at the 7th week of induction of hepatotoxicity. Polyphenol-Loaded Liposomal Nanocarriers from Marrubium vulgare: A Promising Nutraceutical Delivery System with Enhanced Bioactivity and Safety.

Marrubium vulgare L. aerial parts are a rich source of polyphenols with recognized antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties; however, their therapeutic potential is limited due to poor stability and bioavailability. To enhance its pharmacological efficacy, a liposomal formulation of M. vulgare polyphenolic extract (MV-Lipos) was developed in this study by employing the thin-film hydration method. Before encapsulating, the free-extract (MV-Ext) was analyzed using LC-MS, and the resultant nanoliposomes were tested for physicochemical qualities, biological activity, and safety. MV-Lipos exhib

Analysis of Marrubiin in Marrubium alysson L. Extract Using Advanced HPTLC: Chemical Profiling, Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitory Activity, and Molecular Docking.

The main purpose of this work is to investigate the phytochemical composition of Marrubium alysson L. non-polar fraction. GC/MS analysis was used to evaluate the plant extract's saponifiable and unsaponifiable matter. Although M. alysson L. lipoidal matter saponification produced 30.3% of fatty acid methyl esters and 69.7% of unsaponifiable matter. Phytol was the most dominant substance in the unsaponifiable materials. Notably, marrubiin which is one of the most prominent metabolites of Marrubium alysson L. was not detected through our adopted GC/MS technique. Thus, further characterization wa

Therapeutic effect of Marrubium vulgare L. Aqueous extract on chronic constriction injury of sciatic nerve-induced neuropathic pain in mice.

Marrubium vulgare L. leaves have long been recognised in Moroccan traditional medicine for their effectiveness in managing pain and inflammation. However, their potential is in treating peripheral neuropathic pain. This study aimed to investigate the effects of M. vulgare aqueous extract (AEMV) on peripheral neuropathic pain induced by chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the sciatic nerve in mice. This research represents the first exploration of AEMV's therapeutic potential in neuropathic pain management. AEMV was initially analysed using HPLC MS/MS to identify its predominant compound, Marr

This study aims to evaluate the chemical composition and both in vitro and in silico antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of Atriplex halimus L. and Marrubium deserti De Noé, collected from Algeria. UHPLC‑MS/MS analysis revealed that the major compounds in the tested extracts are protocatechuic aldehyde, caffeic acid, cynaroside, and cosmosiin. The data demonstrated that the dichloromethane fraction was richer in polyphenols and flavonoids than the aqueous fraction.
