[The topography of the pancreas of Monodelphis domestica (Marsupialia)].

Shape and position of the pancreas of Monodelphis domestica are described in situ after fixation of the animals with Bouin's fluid. The right lobe of the pancreas is the smallest of the three organ parts. The body of the pancreas is placed in a transverse position in the cranial area of the peritoneal cavity. Ventral access to it is relatively difficult due to the position of the greater parts of the body dorsal to the stomach. In contrast, the left lobe reaches far caudad. Typical for Monodelphis domestica, it extends into the omental veil, offering the possibility of a relatively easy surgic

Localization of chromosome regions in potoroo nuclei ( Potorous tridactylus Marsupialia: Potoroinae).

Chromosome paints of the rat kangaroo ( Aepyprymnus rufuscens, 2 n=32) were used to define chromosome regions in the long nosed potoroo ( Potorous tridactylus, 2 n=12 female, 13 male) karyotype and localize these regions in three-dimensionally preserved nuclei of the potoroo to test the hypothesis that marsupial chromosomes have a radial distribution. In human nuclei chromosomes are distributed in a proposed radial fashion. Gene-rich chromosomes in the human interphase nucleus are preferentially located in the central area while gene-poor chromosomes are found more at the periphery of the nucl

Ontogeny of the masticatory muscles in the opossum Didelphis albiventris (Marsupialia, Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae).

Opossums (marsupials of the Didelphidae family) retain a generalized masticatory apparatus and tribosphenic molars, often used as models to understand the evolution of mastication in early therian mammals. Like all marsupials, their growth goes through a stage when pups complete their development while permanently attached to the mother's teats before weaning and starting feeding on their own. Yet, while the masticatory muscles of adults are known, as is the ontogeny of the cranium and mandible, the ontogenetic changes in the masticatory muscles remain unknown. Here we describe for the first t

Natural infection of Didelphis aurita (Mammalia: Marsupialia) with Leishmania infantum in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: The opossum Didelphis have been considered as natural hosts of Leishmania parasites in the New World, suggesting an important role in the epidemiology of Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL). Among six extant species that belong to the genus Didelphis, only two (D. marsupialis and D. albiventris), have been mentioned as natural hosts of Leishmania infantum in Brazil and Colombia. In the present paper, it is reported for the first time, the observation of intracellular parasites (amastigotes) in tissues of Didelphis aurita naturally infected with Leishmania infantum in Brazil. We also discus

Spermiogenesis in the brush-tailed possum, Trichosurus vulpecula (Marsupialia). The development of the acrosome.

Acrosome development in the Australian Brush-tailed possum, Trichosurus vulpecula, displays a number of extraordinary features. This is particularly evident in the later stages of spermiogenesis, when the area of the nuclear surface bounded by the nuclear ring, and covered by the acrosome, is reduced considerable. As a result, the acrosomal material becomes located over its definitive position on the anterior third of the dorsal nuclear surface; in this process it is thrown into a series of folds, and a wide subacrosomal space is formed. Further changes around the time of spermiation result in

Didelphis aurita (Marsupialia: Didelphidae): a new host for Sarcocystis lindsayi (Apicomplexa: Sarcocystidae).

Nine opossums, Didelphis aurita , were captured in the city of Seropédica, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and examined for species of Sarcocystis. Sporocysts were observed in the mucosal scrapings of the small intestine from 3 opossums. Five budgerigars, Melopsittacus undulatus , were infected with sporocysts from each of these infected opossums and 5 budgerigars were used as controls. Of the 15 sporocyst-treated budgerigars, 5 birds that received sporocysts from 1 of the infected opossums developed tissue parasites. Wombat reproduction (Marsupialia; Vombatidae): an update and future directions for the development of artificial breeding technology.

This review provides an update on what is currently known about wombat reproductive biology and reports on attempts made to manipulate and/or enhance wombat reproduction as part of the development of artificial reproductive technology (ART) in this taxon. Over the last decade, the logistical difficulties associated with monitoring a nocturnal and semi-fossorial species have largely been overcome, enabling new features of wombat physiology and behaviour to be elucidated. Despite this progress, captive propagation rates are still poor and there are areas of wombat reproductive biology that still

Effect of testosterone and cortisol administration on the reproductive tract of male Antechinus stuartii (Marsupialia).

The life history of Antechinus stuartii, a marsupial, is highly synchronized and culminates in a brief mating period that is followed by complete male mortality. The accessory reproductive tracts of male A. stuartii enlarge in association with testosterone and cortisol hormone concentrations, but this appears to be unrelated to the spermatogenic cycle. The present study examined the effects of testosterone and cortisol on the male reproductive tract. Four groups of adult males from May (when plasma testosterone and cortisol concentrations are low) were given depot injections of testosterone es

Keeping an ear out: size relationship of the tympanic bullae and pinnae in bandicoots and bilbies (Marsupialia: Peramelemorphia).

Bandicoots and bilbies (Order Peramelemorphia) occupy a broad range of habitats across Australia and New Guinea, from open, arid deserts to dense forests. This once diverse group has been particularly vulnerable to habitat loss and introduced eutherian predators, and numerous species extinctions and range retractions have occurred. Understanding reasons for this loss requires greater understanding of their biology. Morphology of the pinnae and tympanic bullae varies markedly among species. As hearing is important for both predator avoidance and prey location, the variability in ear morphology

Digestion and metabolism of high-tannin Eucalyptus foliage by the brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) (Marsupialia: Phalangeridae).

The digestion and metabolism of Eucalyptus melliodora foliage was studied in captive brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula). The foliage was low in nitrogen and silica but high in lignified fibre and phenolics compared with diets consumed by most other herbivores. The high lignin content was suggested as the main cause of the low digestibility of E. melliodora cell walls (24%); microscopic observations of plant fragments in the caecum and faeces revealed few bacteria attached to lignified tissues. The conversion of digestible energy (0.34 MJ X kg-0.75 X d-1) to metabolizable energy (0.26 MJ

KLOSSIELLA DULCIS N. SP. (APICOMPLEXA: KLOSSIELLIDAE) IN THE KIDNEYS OF PETAURUS BREVICEPS (MARSUPIALIA: PETAURIDAE).

Two cases of renal klossiellosis were diagnosed by histopathology in pet sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps). In both cases, parasites were associated with tubular dilation and mild interstitial nephritis. Rare schizonts were seen in the proximal convoluted renal tubular epithelium, whereas all other life cycle stages were found within distal convoluted tubule cells or the urinary space of the structures distal to the loop of Henle. Conventional optical and transmission electron microscopies were used to assess the life stages of the parasite. The morphologic characteristics and measurements ob

Digestive performance and digesta passage in the omnivorous greater bilby, Macrotis lagotis (Marsupialia: Peramelidae).

Omnivores such as the greater bilby (Macrotis lagotis) consume a variety of dietary items and often are faced with large changes in the nutrient composition of their food. This paper explores the basis for the dietary flexibility of the bilby by comparing digestive performance and digesta retention patterns of captive bilbies fed either an insect diet (mealworm larvae) or a plant diet (mixed seeds). Mean retention times (MRTs) of particle and solute markers in the gastrointestinal tract did not differ significantly between the two diets, but MRT of the particle marker was significantly longer

Studies on metatherian sex chromosomes. IX. Sex chromosomes of the greater glider (Marsupialia: Petauridae).

The greater glider, currently but incorrectly known as Schoinobates volans, is widely distributed in forested regions in eastern Australia. All animals studied from six different localities had 20 autosomes but there were four chromosomally distinct populations. At Royal National Park, N.S.W., all female greater gliders studied had 22 chromosomes including two large submetacentric X chromosomes with subterminal secondary constrictions in their longer arms. This form of X chromosome occurred also at Bondo State Forest, Myall Lakes and Coff's Harbour, N.S.W., and at Eidsvold, Qld. At Coomooboola

Revisiting the Role of Opossums (Marsupialia) as Sentinel for Brazilian Spotted Fever Caused by Rickettsia rickettsii.

In southeastern Brazil, Rickettsia rickettsii, the agent of Brazilian spotted fever (BSF), is mainly transmitted to humans by Amblyomma sculptum ticks, whose populations are chiefly sustained by capybaras, Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris. As capybaras are sentinel hosts for BSF, serological analysis of capybaras is the most feasible way to determine whether an A. sculptum population is infected with R. rickettsii or not. Because the immature stages of A. sculptum commonly feed on opossums (Didelphis spp.), which are susceptible to R. rickettsii infection, this study aimed to validate the use of opos

Ultrastructural evidence for loss of the trophoblastic layer in the chorioallantoic placenta of Australian bandicoots (Marsupialia: Peramelidae).

In most marsupials, placentation involves only the yolk sac; however, in the bandicoot family, Peramelidae, a functional chorioallantoic placentation develops in addition (Hill, 1895, 1897, 1900; Flynn, '22, '23). This duality is viewed as having evolutionary significance because most eutheria have both placentae. Furthermore, the bandicoot trophoblast was reported to vanish from the chorioallantoic site in late gestation (Hill, 1897; Flynn, '23); whereas, the eutherian trophoblast is identifiable throughout later pregnancy and may act as an immunological barrier between maternal and fetal gen

A redescription of Trichosurolaelaps dixous Domrow, 1972 (Acari: Laelapidae), from Trichosurus cunninghami (Marsupialia: Phalangeridae) from southern Australia.

The adults of Trichosurolaelaps dixous Domrow, 1972 are redescribed from a population of Trichosurus cunninghami Lindenmayer, Dubach et Viggers, 2002 in south-eastern Australia. The nymphal stages are described for the first time. Morphologically, T. dixous is similar to Trichosurolaelaps crassipes Womersley, 1956. Morphological differences between the prefemale deutonymphs and adult females of the two mite species are the presence of a single large ventral spur on tibia I of T. dixous. Males of T. dixous could not be distinguished from T. crassipes morphologically and the idiosomal length of
