The martial arts have a reputation for being a high-risk activity, but are generally practiced in a safe environment. This article presents the results of a survey which is used to calculate risk of injury per 1000 hours of practice. The injury rate compares favorably with other mainstream activities; in fact, the martial arts are generally considered safer than most. The most common injuries occur to the wrist, hand, finger, foot, knee, head, and thigh. Special issues of importance for prevention and treatment of these injuries are discussed.

In the United States, approximately 1.5 million to 2 million persons practice the martial arts. It is the general belief that martial arts are safe, with little thought given to the physical forces involved. Some enthusiasts gravitate to the martial arts to learn self-defense, whereas others participate to improve cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, and self-esteem. Some join for the structured exercise programs, whereas others desire the artistic expression or have a need to compete. Injuries involve the head and neck region, trunk, and extremities. In brief A large survey of martial arts athletes was conducted, and 24, 112 injuries were identified. The areas most commonly injured were the thighs, legs, and digits. Contusions, sprains, and strains were the most common types of injuries. Most injuries occurred in less experienced people, and the number of injuries decreased as expertise and training increased. Only 47 serious injuries were recorded, a rate of 1 in 500 injuries. Most serious injuries, especially head injuries, occurred while sparring and in tournaments. Less than half the injuries that occur during tournaments are brought t

Mixed martial arts (MMA), a combat sport consisting of wrestling, boxing, and martial arts, is a popular activity associated with danger and violence. Of concern are the repetitive head impacts, both subconcussive and concussive, sustained by MMA athletes. The rules of MMA encourage head strikes, but there was no formal concussion protocol in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) until 2021. Because the UFC was established less than 30 years, the long-term consequences of these repetitive concussive head blows are lacking. In this review, we focus on current literature sought to summarize t

Martial arts are various systems of combat skills encompassing striking and grappling. Many styles have evolved into modern sports, and some have been included in the Olympics. The physicality of these can predispose practitioners to musculoskeletal injuries, such as anterior cruciate ligament ruptures; patellar, shoulder, or elbow instabilities; extremity fractures; and hand and spine injuries, which have been studied both clinically and biomechanically. The most common injury related to longer time loss from participation is an anterior cruciate ligament rupture. Higher injury incidence is a

Combat sports training involves a high risk of head injury. Previously published research on head trauma exposure in MMA evaluated only the knockouts (KO), without calculating all head strikes. The aim of the research was to evaluate the total head trauma exposure during MMA competitions among male and female fighters. Two thousand four hundred and eighty-eight MMA fights from all numbered UFC events between 2000 and 2021 were analyzed. A database containing the results from officially published scorecards with information such as the outcome of a fight, its duration, number of strikes (signif

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of dry needling (DN) intervention on the responses of muscle tone, stiffness, and elasticity, as well as power, pressure pain thresholds, and blood perfusion of the flexor carpi radialis muscle in mixed martial arts (MMA) athletes. Thirty-two trained/developmental men MMA fighters (25.5±4.5 years; 24.5±3 body mass index) participated in a randomized crossover study. Participants underwent a single intervention, receiving both DN and placebo. Laser Doppler flowmetry measured blood perfusion, while a myotonometer assessed the mechanical charac

Mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions have gained much popularity, and the sport is watched by many millions annually. Despite ongoing controversy, there have been no objective studies of the injuries sustained in MMA based on on-site evaluation. In the study reported in this article, we attempted to delineate injury patterns for MMA participants. We conducted an observational cohort study of MMA competitions held in Hawaii between 1999 and 2006. The study included 116 bouts, involving 232 "exposures" and 179 male participants between ages 18 and 40. All the fighters were examined by 1 of 4 ph

Qinggong and parkour emerged in different cultural-historical settings, yet both address the practical problem of negotiating obstacles efficiently. This study examines how historically situated Qinggong training ideas might serve as heuristic resources for contemporary parkour pedagogy. A cross-cultural conceptual comparative design was applied to a purposively and theoretically sampled corpus comprising Qinggong and Wushu manuals and historical texts, contemporary Chinese Wushu scholarship, parkour sociocultural and pedagogical literature, biomechanical, physiological, and injury-related stu

J Strength Cond Res 39(8): 890-892, 2025-Grip strength is a key component during grappling segments of a mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. Gloves are worn during MMA competitions to reduce damage to the striker and the opponent during contact. Fighters often complain that MMA gloves reduce the ability to grip an opponent effectively. However, the reported decrease in grip strength has yet to be examined. The purpose of this study was t
