Cannabis involvement and mass shooting events in the United States from 1900 to 2019.

OBJECTIVES: Mass murder is associated with a lifetime history of substance use. We aimed to examine cannabis involvement among those who committed mass shootings in the United States from 1900 to 2019. METHODS: We identified mass shooting events in the United States from 1900 to 2019 using publicly available English-language media reports and court/police records. People who perpetrated mass murders using methods other than firearms (eg, knives, automobiles) were used as a comparison group. Events were dichotomised into either prior to 1996 or from 1996 onward (first legalisation for medical

Introducing Sharing Information to Stop Mass Shootings (SISMS): A Short Report on a Behavioral and Event-Level Dataset for the Study of Mass Public Shootings.

This paper is in response to the manuscript entitled, "Success, failure and emotions: Examining the relationship between performance feedback and emotions in diagnostic reasoning," (Jarrell, Harley, Lajoie, & Naismith, Educational Technology & Research Development, 65, 1263-1284: 2017) from a K-12 teacher and administrator educational perspective. Jarrell et al.'s (Educational Technology & Research Development, 65, 1263-1284: 2017) findings indicate a strong relationship between outcome emotions and performance tasks: highest performing medical students had the most positive emotions. Impact of the Las Vegas Mass Shooting Event on the Graduate Medical Education Mission: Can There Be Growth from Tragedy?

INTRODUCTION: Our aim was to determine the psychological and educational impact of the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting on the graduate medical education (GME) mission within two cohorts of resident physicians and attending faculty at two nearby academic trauma centers. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey assessed 55 resident physicians and attending faculty involved in the acute care of the patients from the mass shooting. We measured the psychological impact of the event, post-traumatic growth, team cohesion, social support, and known risk factors for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Additi

Australian Mass Shootings: An Analysis of Incidents and Offenders.

Mass shooting events are relatively underresearched, and most study comes from the United States. Despite significant international interest, little is known about other countries' experiences of these events. The current study examines Australian mass shooting incidents and offenders, with emphasis on mental illness, life strains, and offenders' life histories. Australia had 14 mass shootings between 1964 and 2014. Most offenders experienced acute life stressors and/or chronic strains leading up to the event; however, diagnosed mental illness was less commonly documented. These observations p

Mass-Shooting Survivors: Advancing Research and Practice.

Mass-shooting events are of increasing public and scholarly concern in the United States. While research into the causes of these events and possibilities for prevention is growing, our knowledge of the impacts of mass shootings on survivors is limited. This brief report examines current research on mass-shooting victimization and proposes how adjacent literature can assist in developing a broader knowledge base.

The COVID-19 pandemic and its impacts on mass shootings in six major US cities.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has significant impacts on the US socioeconomic structure. Gun violence is a major public health issue and the effects on this area have not been well-elucidated. The objective of this study was to determine the impacts of the pandemic on mass shootings in six major United States cities with historically high rates of gun violence. METHODS: Mass shooting data were extracted from an open-source database, Gun Violence Archive. Mass shooting was defined as four or more people shot at a single event. Data from six cities with the highest incidence of mass shootin

Silent echoes: understanding and predicting the widespread mental health impact of mass shootings.

Half of the 20 deadliest US. mass shootings have occurred in the past decade. We propose and find that the mental health consequences of such shootings are not confined to the immediate community but affect Americans nationwide. We merge two datasets, the Household Pulse Survey and the Northeastern University Mass Killing Database to assess that nationwide effect. Our dataset links 20 consecutive Household Pulse waves (March 2022-November 2023; N ≈ 1,094,000 adults) with every public mass shooting in the same window (17 events). Using survey-weighted logistic regressions that incorporate repli

Media Exposure and the Risk of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Following a Mass traumatic Event: An In-silico Experiment.

Introduction: Following mass traumatic events, greater exposure to traditional media like television (TV) about the event is associated with higher burden of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, we know little about how social media exposure, combined with other media sources, shapes the population burden of PTSD following mass traumatic events. Materials and Methods: We built a microsimulation of 1,18,000 agents that was demographically comparable to the population of Parkland and Coral Springs, Florida that experienced the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in 2018. We parametr

Epidemiology of Mass Shootings in the United States.

This in-depth review delves into the multifaceted realm of mass shootings and explores their epidemiology from a psychological perspective. The article presents a comprehensive examination of the prevalence, perpetrator and victim profiles, motives, and contributing factors associated with mass shootings. By investigating the intricate relationship between masculinity, domestic violence, military service, social media, fame-seeking, suicidal ideation, mental illness, and firearms, this article sheds light on the multifaceted nature of mass shootings. Moreover, it discusses the importance of im

Violence is Rare in Autism: When It Does Occur, Is It Sometimes Extreme?

A small body of literature has suggested that, rather than being more likely to engage in offending or violent behavior, individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may actually have an increased risk of being the victim rather than the perpetrator of violence (Sobsey, Wells, Lucardie, & Mansell, 1995 ). There is no evidence that people with ASD are more violent than those without ASD (Im, 2016). There is nevertheless a small subgroup of individuals with ASD who exhibit violent offending behaviours and our previous work has suggested that other factors, such as adverse childhood experience

State gun laws, gun ownership, and mass shootings in the US: cross sectional time series.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether restrictiveness-permissiveness of state gun laws or gun ownership are associated with mass shootings in the US. DESIGN: Cross sectional time series. SETTING AND POPULATION: US gun owners from 1998-2015. EXPOSURE: An annual rating between 0 (completely restrictive) and 100 (completely permissive) for the gun laws of all 50 states taken from a reference guide for gun owners traveling between states from 1998 to 2015. Gun ownership was estimated annually as the percentage of suicides committed with firearms in each state. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Mass shootings we

Public mass shootings cause large surges in Americans' engagement with gun policy.

As public mass shootings continue to plague the United States, a growing scholarly literature seeks to understand the political effects of these tragic events. This literature, however, focuses on public opinion or turnout and vote choice, leaving open to question whether or not public mass shootings affect a range of other important actions citizens may take to engage with gun policy. Leveraging the as-good-as random timing of high-publicity public mass shootings over the past decade and an immense array of publicly available and proprietary data, we demonstrate that these events consistently

Parental perceptions of school safety and institutional response after a mass school shooting in Serbia.

BACKGROUND: Serbia's first fatal school shooting on 3 May 2023, followed by a subsequent mass murder, resulted in widespread societal distress. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the emotional, cognitive, and behavioral responses of parents of school-aged children who were neither directly nor indirectly exposed to the events. It also examined parental perceptions of children's safety at school, access to information and psychological support, attitudes toward proposed preventive measures, and trust in institutional capacity to prevent future incidents. METHODS: A total of 1,996 parents a

Implementing a Stop the Bleed Course and Active Shooter Principles With Prelicensure Nursing Students: A Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: Deaths by firearms have surpassed motor vehicle accidents as the leading cause of death within the United States. Mass shootings have increased annually, leading to civilian trauma systems implementing military trauma training and rapid tourniquet use to treat extremity injuries. BACKGROUND: The American College of Surgeons' Stop the Bleed course has become a widely adopted public education initiative focused on the immediate treatment of life-threatening bleeding caused by firearm injuries. METHODS: Thirty prelicensure nursing students engaged in a structured simulation that i

The Mental Health Consequences of Mass Shootings.

Mass shooting episodes have increased over recent decades and received substantial media coverage. Despite the potentially widespread and increasing mental health impact of mass shootings, no efforts to our knowledge have been made to review the empirical literature on this topic. We identified 49 peer-reviewed articles, comprised of 27 independent samples in the aftermath of 15 mass shooting incidents. Based on our review, we concluded that mass shootings are associated with a variety of adverse psychological outcomes in survivors and members of affected communities. Less is known about the p

Differential predictors of transient stress versus posttraumatic stress disorder: evaluating risk following targeted mass violence.

Schools have become a common incident site for targeted mass violence, including mass shootings. Although exposure to mass violence can result in significant distress, most individuals are able to fully recover over time, while a minority develop more pervasive pathology, such as PTSD. The present study investigated how several pre- and posttrauma factors predict posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in both the acute and distal aftermath of a campus mass shooting using a sample with known levels of pretrauma functioning (N=573). Although the largest proportion of participants evidenced resilie

Mass Shootings in Public Places: Continuities and Complexities.

This study examined 71 mass shootings carried out by a single individual who opened fire on random victims in a public setting. Findings indicate that the (all-male) shooters commonly showed signs of anger, isolation, and marginalization. Many were motivated by a perceived grievance. However, among the sizeable group of young White men, extremist, hate-based ideologies often served as motivations. While very few of the shooters had been formally diagnosed, a number had shown signs of mental illness or suicidal tendencies, and close to 30% committed suicide following their attacks. The shooters

Mitigating the mental health consequences of mass shootings: An in-silico experiment.

BACKGROUND: There is emerging evidence that mass shootings are associated with adverse mental health outcomes at the community level. Data from other mass-traumatic events examined the effectiveness of usual care (UC), (i.e., psychological first aid approaches without triage), and stepped care (SC) approaches, with triage, in reducing the burden of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a community. METHODS: We built an agent-based model of 118,000 people that was demographically comparable to the population of Parkland and Coral Springs, Florida, US. We parametrized the model with data fro

Longitudinal evaluation of the relationship between maladaptive trauma coping and distress: examination following the mass shooting at Virginia Tech.

Growing evidence supports that the coping strategies that individuals utilize are a key predictor of distress following trauma. However, there is limited longitudinal research examining the relationship between psychological distress and coping over time, and even less research examining the possibility of reciprocal relationships between distress and coping, despite the fact that prior theoretical work posits such a relationship. The current study modeled the relationship between distress (PTSD and general distress) and maladaptive coping over time in a sample of 368 college women exposed to
