Mastication Steal Syndrome.

A 56-year-old woman presented with episodic vertigo, dizziness, and diplopia during meals and prolonged verbal presentations at work. Subsequent work-up included an eventual catheter-based angiogram revealing an ostial left external carotid artery (ECA) occlusion with reconstituted retrograde flow via a variant collateral branch from the dominant left vertebral artery. The findings demonstrate that repetitive activities involving craniofacial muscular systems supplied by the ECA result in a symptomatic arterial steal syndrome via the enhanced diverted flow from the collateral vertebral-basilar

Recurrent syncope during mastication.

Steal syndrome is characterized by the disruption of blood flow from specific vascular territories due to perfusion via collateral vessels bypassing an obstructed artery segment. In the neurovascular setting, this can lead to entities such as subclavian steal syndrome or the less prevalent double steal phenomenon, primarily associated with atherosclerosis. We present a case of an early 80s patient with cerebrovascular insufficiency who exhibited neurological deficits during mastication. The angiographic evaluation showed occlusion at the origins of the left common carotid and of the brachiocep

Condylar movements during mastication.

To investigate the relationship between mastication and TMJ abnormalities, the incisal point and condylar movements during mastication were analysed in two normal subjects and six patients with stomatognathic dysfunction. The patients with stomatognathic dysfunction were two patients with unilateral anterior disk displacement with reduction, two with unilateral anterior disk displacement without reduction, and two with unilateral osteoarthritis. The incisal point movement was recorded using Sirognathograph Analysing System, and condylar movement was recorded with a pantograph. The movement pat

Mastication-induced vertigo and nystagmus.

Even though trigeminovestibular connections are well established in animals, mastication-induced dizziness has been described only as a vascular steal phenomenon in humans. We determined induction or modulation of nystagmus in two index patients with mastication-induced vertigo, 12 normal controls, and 52 additional patients with peripheral (n = 38, 26 with vestibular neuritis/labyrinthitis and 12 with Meniere's disease) or central (n = 14, 11 with Wallenberg syndrome, two with cerebellar infarction, and one with pontine infarction) vestibulopathy during their acute or compensated phase. Ingestive mastication in horses resembles rumination but not ingestive mastication in cattle and camels.

Horses achieve a higher degree of particle size reduction through ingestive mastication than functional ruminants. We characterized mastication using chew-monitoring halters (RumiWatch) in six domestic horses, cattle, and Bactrian camels each. All animals were offered grass hay of the same batch for 15 min. In cattle and camels, measurements were continued after eating until rumination was observed. Except for one horse, 96% of the horses' ingestive mastication data were identified as "rumination" by the proprietary RumiWatch algorithm, whereas ingestion and rumination by cattle and camels wer

Mastication and swallowing: an overview.

The cycles of jaw and tongue movement during feeding produce not only the breakage of food but its intra-oral transport; which activity predominates depends upon the physical characteristics of the food. When hard food is eaten and tooth-food-tooth contact is made during jaw closure, the velocity of closing is suddenly reduced, producing two clearly different phases of closure; during the second phase the activity of the jaw closing muscles is much increased. Conversely, in cycles with a mainly transport function (eating soft food), the antero-posterior movements of the tongue are much greater

Mastication Influences Human Brain Anatomy.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this observational clinical study was to evaluate the relationship between brain anatomical and volumetric changes in white matter, grey matter, and cerebral cortex thickness with the number of functional occlusal pairs present in the mouth. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The number of functional occlusal pairs in 70 patients was counted and non-invasive brain analysis was performed using magnetic resonance imaging. The volume of grey matter, white matter, and thickness of the cortex in different areas of the brain were determined by SPM12 and CAT12 software. Multiple regres

Age-related changes in mastication.

The paper reviews human mastication, focusing on its age-related changes. The first part describes mastication adaptation in young healthy individuals. Adaptation to obtain a food bolus ready to be swallowed relies on variations in number of cycles, muscle strength and volume of emitted saliva. As a result, the food bolus displays granulometric and rheological properties, the values of which are maintained within the adaptive range of deglutition. The second part concerns healthy ageing. Some mastication parameters are slightly modified by age, but ageing itself does not impair mastication, as

Comparison of Child and Adult Mastication of a Sticky Processed Cream Cheese and Simulation with a Masticator.

An advantage of masticators is the calibration and possible standardization of intra- and inter-individual mastication variability. However, mastication of soft, sticky and melting products, such as processed cream cheeses, is challenging to reproduce with a masticator. The objectives of this work were, for the cheese studied: (1) to compare child and adult mastication and (2) to find in vitro parameters which best reproduce their in vivo chewing. Five parameters influencing mastication (mouth volume, quantity consumed, saliva volume, mastication time and number of tongue-palate compressions)

Coordination of cranial motoneurons during mastication.

Mastication is the first stage of digestion and involves several motor processes such as food intake, intra-oral food transport, bolus formation and chewing in its broad sense. These complicated motor functions can be accomplished by the well-coordinated activities in various cranial motoneurons innervating the jaw, hyoid, tongue and facial muscles. The brainstem masticatory central pattern generator (CPG) plays a crucial role in generating basic activity patterns of these cranial motoneuron groups. However, descending inputs from higher brain (e.g., cerebral cortex) and mastication-generated

Influence of mastication on gastric emptying.

The role of mastication on digestion efficiency remains to be demonstrated. This study investigates whether masticatory function influences gastric emptying rate. Twelve normal volunteers were studied on two occasions after ingestion of the same test meal containing ham cubes, crackers, and egg (mixed with 13C-octanoic acid), chewed, in random order, either with 50 masticatory cycles or with 25 cycles, swallowing ham cubes whole. Lag phase (Tlag) and gastric half-emptying time (T1/2) were measured by means of the 13C-octanoic acid breath test. Trituration performance was assessed by the sieve

Mastication as a Stress-Coping Behavior.

Exposure to chronic stress induces various physical and mental effects that may ultimately lead to disease. Stress-related disease has become a global health problem. Mastication (chewing) is an effective behavior for coping with stress, likely due to the alterations chewing causes in the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and autonomic nervous system. Mastication under stressful conditions attenuates stress-induced increases in plasma corticosterone and catecholamines, as well as the expression of stress-related substances, such as neurotrophic factors and nitric oxide. MR imaging of muscles of mastication.

High-field MR imaging was used to study structural and physiologic alterations involving the muscles of mastication in 46 patients. Muscular abnormalities were often detected incidentally in conjunction with lesions of the CNS, cranial nerves, facial bones, and/or temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Specific pathologic alterations observed included anomalies of musculoskeletal development, muscle hypertrophy, atrophy (disuse and denervation), inflammatory disorders, injuries (including contusions, tears, and muscle rupture), posttraumatic musculoskeletal deformities, and reflex sympathetic dystroph

Canines Masticating on the Lower Extremity.

Clinicians caring for feet may be hearing stories of canines masticating the foot/digits on unsuspecting persons with diabetes and neuropathy. For the most part, these reports are anecdotal. Actual publications on this topic are scarce. The following discussion and case reports depict a typical presentation with a sleeping person with diabetic polyneuropathy and infection, which attracts the canine and results in tissue mastication. The workup and care for such clinical presentations appear straightforward and effective; however, the authors highly recommend that providers that care for person

Anatomy and pathology of the masticator space.

OBJECTIVE: This article reviews and illustrates the anatomy and pathology of the masticator space (MS). BACKGROUND: Pathology of the masticator space includes inflammatory conditions, vascular lesions, and tumours. Intrinsic tumours of this space can be benign and malignant, and they may arise from the mandibular ramus, the third division of the trigeminal nerve, or the mastication muscles. Malignant tumours may appear well defined and confined by the masticator fascia, without imaging signs of aggressive extension into neighbouring soft tissues. Secondary invasion of the masticator space can
