Staphylococcus aureus exosecretions and bovine mastitis.

The role of Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococcal exosecretions in bovine udder infection was tested by monitoring the cows' response to in vivo inoculation of bacterial exosecretions into udder quarters. Twenty Israeli-Holstein dairy cows were included in the study; two or three of the udder quarters of each cow were intracisternally inoculated with 0.04-0.05 mg/quarter (total proteins) of the various sterile bacterial exosecretions in a sterile pyrogen-free saline. Each udder was inoculated with two or three different bacterial exosecretions or placebo (Columbia Broth).

Natural Agents against Bovine Mastitis Pathogens.

Bovine mastitis is the most widespread and economically important disease worldwide. The present study aimed to determine bioactive compounds in two essential oils (EOs) from wild (Thymus serpyllum) and common thyme (Thymus vulgaris) and to assess the antioxidant potential as well as antibacterial efficacy of the EOs against mastitis-associated bacteria. The study also included antibiotic susceptibility tests. The strains were previously isolated from lactating animals with clinical and subclinical mastitis. The antioxidant potential of the commercial EOs of wild and common thyme was evaluated

Tylosin susceptibility of Staphylococci from bovine mastitis.

Although the 16-membered macrolide tylosin is commonly used for the treatment of bovine mastitis, little information is currently available about the susceptibility of mastitis pathogens to tylosin. In the present study, 112 Staphylococcus aureus and 110 coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CoNS) spp. isolates from cases of bovine mastitis were tested by broth microdilution and agar disk diffusion with 30 μg tylosin disks. Susceptibility to erythromycin was tested by broth microdilution and disk diffusion using 15 μg disks. Both test populations showed bimodal distributions of minimal inhibitory

Infectious bovine mastitis caused by environmental organisms.

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of environmental mastitis in dairy herds and identify the main environmental pathogens, and to evaluate the influence of season, housing and management. A total of 20,310 quarters of 5216 animals from 52 dairy herds in 32 counties was examined. Milk samples were aseptically collected for laboratory examination from mammary glands testing positive to any of the field tests. From these, 736 environmental infections were identified. The most frequently isolated environmental pathogens were algae of the genus Prototheca sp. (41.2%), Strepto

Novel Polyherbal Nanocolloids to Control Bovine Mastitis.

Mastitis is a widespread disease in dairy cattle occurring throughout the world. The increased use of antibiotics brings about the development of antibiotic-resistant microbes. The application of antibiotics in dairy farming led to increased antibiotic resistance and represents a major obstacle for the treatment of mastitis. Recent advancements in nanotechnology led to the development of nanocolloids to overcome disadvantages posed by conventional antimicrobial agents. Hence, a novel, environmentally friendly, cost-effective, biocompatible, and long-term antibacterial represents a promising so

Predicting probability of cure in bovine clinical mastitis.

Knowledge of the probability that a dairy cow will cure of mastitis when treated with antimicrobials would facilitate informed treatment decisions. A generalised linear mixed model was created for predicting the probability of cure of cases of clinical mastitis. Cure was defined as the absence of subclinical and clinical mastitis over the subsequent two or three milk-recordings. The data described 5845 cases of mastitis on 49 U.K. commercial dairy farms between 2003 and 2005, alongside cow- and herd-level variables proposed to be associated with cure. Data were partitioned into two subsets, fo

The role of anaerobic bacteria in bovine mastitis: a review.

Routine bacteriological diagnosis of bovine mastitis does not provide an index to the obligate anaerobic flora involved. No anaerobic bacteria were recovered from cows with normal quarters or those with latent facultative anaerobic or aerobic udder infections as diagnosed according to the criteria of the International Dairy Federation. Simultaneous isolation of anaerobic bacteria from udder quarter abscesses and mastitic milk from the same quarter occur in some lactating dairy cows. In most dairy herds there are cows with anaerobic udder infections. Anaerobic bacteria have been isolated from l

Beyond the Transcriptome: The m6A Epitranscriptome in Bovine Mastitis.

Bovine mastitis is a heterogeneous inflammatory disease that compromises milk production, animal welfare and dairy sustainability. Despite extensive transcriptomic and epigenomic research, a PubMed search completed in September 2026 identified only 12 primary studies addressing epitranscriptomic regulation in bovine mastitis, representing approximately 0.1% of indexed publications. This review critically evaluates N6-methyladenosine (m6A), the most extensively studied RNA modification in bovine mastitis, its regulatory machinery and effects on mammary immunity, while identifying m5C and A-to-I

Klebsiella species associated with bovine mastitis in Newfoundland.

Klebsiella spp. is a common cause of bovine mastitis, but information regarding its molecular epidemiology is lacking from many parts of the world. On using mass spectrometry and partial sequencing of the rpoB gene, it was found that over a one year study, K. variicola and Enterobacter cloacae were misidentified as K. pneumoniae in a small number of clinical mastitis (CM) cases from Newfoundland. Results suggest that the currently used standard biochemical/phenotypic tests lack the sensitivity required to accurately discriminate among the three mentioned Gram negative bacteria. In addition, a

Bacteria from bovine clinical mastitis showed multiple drug resistance.

Mastitis, which often manifests as udder infection in dairy animals, is of great concern as it affects public health and results in heavy economic losses to the dairy industry. A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the cultivable bacterial species associated with bovine clinical mastitis and their resistance patterns towards different antimicrobials. The milk samples from cows suffering from clinical mastitis during monsoon season were investigated. The prevalence of clinical mastitis was significantly high in Holstein-Friesian crossbred cows, followed by in Jersey

Methicillin resistant S. aureus in human and bovine mastitis.

Staphylococcus aureus is a ubiquitous organism that causes a variety of diseases including mastitis in cattle and humans. High-level resistance of S. aureus to β-lactams conferred by a mecA gene encoding a modified penicillin binding protein (PBP2a) was first observed in the early 1960's. These methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA) have been responsible for both hospital acquired infections (HA-MRSA) and, more recently, community acquired MRSA (CA-MRSA). A small number of human MRSA mastitis cases and outbreaks in maternity or neonatal units have been reported which are generally the result o

A comprehensive map of the bovine mobilome and their epigenetic regulation of mastitis.

Retrotransposons are major components of mammalian genomes, yet their genome-wide annotation and epigenetic regulation in cattle remain incompletely characterized. Here, we present a comprehensive annotation and integrative epigenomic analysis of major retrotransposon classes in the bovine genome, with emphasis on DNA methylation patterns and their potential roles in subclinical mastitis. Using a multi-step de novo pipeline, we identified and classified long interspersed nuclear elements (LINEs), short interspersed nuclear elements (SINEs), and endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) in the bovine refe

Toxic bovine mastitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus in twin cows.

In this report, we describe two cases of bovine toxic mastitis associated with S. aureus and we provide DNA microarray based characterization data of the strain causing the disease. Both cows had recently calved and suffered from anorexia, pyrexia, and an elevated heart rate. In both animals, at least one mammary gland was swollen, hardened, sensitive to touch, and produced brownish or bloody secretions. The clinical state of the animals deteriorated quickly and both cows had to be euthanized within 48 hours after presentation. The S. aureus strain, which was isolated from the mastitis milk of
