This study aimed to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the mathematics-writing (MW) performance of students with mathematics difficulties (MDs) in China. We compared the performance of students with MD with their typically developing (TD) and high-performing (HP) peers. The analysis was based on a sample of 138 sixth-grade students. Our findings revealed (a) the trend in MW performance followed the hierarchy of mathematics ability levels (HP > TD > MD), whereas all groups displayed similar performance in general writing (HP = TD = MD), (b) although all three groups were able to organiz

High school mathematics can have a direct impact on the academic, health, and financial outcomes of students. To understand how to better support students experiencing mathematics difficulty (MD) in Grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 (i.e., high school), we conducted a synthesis of 21 studies in which author teams investigated the efficacy of a mathematics intervention across a total sample of 197 students. Overall, 15 studies demonstrated positive outcomes, with four studies demonstrating no effects and two studies demonstrating mixed results. We identified several instructional strategies used across

BACKGROUND: The pigment melanin is produced by specialized cells, called melanocytes. In healthy skin, melanocytes are sparsely spread among the other cell types in the basal layer of the epidermis. Sun tanning results from an UV-induced increase in the release of melanin to neighbouring keratinocytes, the major cell type component of the epidermis as well as redistribution of melanin among these cells. Here we provide a mathematical conceptualization of our current knowledge of the tanning response, in terms of a dynamic model. The resolution level of the model is tuned to available data, and

Mathematics fact fluency is essential for proficiency in advanced topics, such as algebra. However, many students in the United States, including those in elementary and secondary grades, experience mathematics difficulties (MD) and struggle to develop fluency with mathematics facts. We synthesized findings from 35 group-design studies, reporting 178 effect sizes (ESs), conducted between 1975 and June 2024, to evaluate the efficacy of fact fluency interventions and identify key malleable moderators of intervention outcomes. Results from a Robust Variance Estimation (RVE) model revealed an educ

AIM: Children with epilepsy have an increased risk of difficulties with mathematics. Research into the mathematics difficulties of children with epilepsy, however, is limited. This study sought to determine whether the mathematics difficulties of children with epilepsy are related to mathematics anxiety over and above other previously identified factors (reading difficulties, generalized anxiety, and working memory).
METHOD: Seventy-nine parents of children with epilepsy and 72 parents of typically developing children completed online questionnaires on their child's mathematics and reading di

Given that achievement in learning mathematics at school correlates with work and social achievements, it is important to understand the cognitive processes underlying abilities to learn mathematics efficiently as well as reasons underlying the occurrence of mathematics anxiety (i.e. feelings of tension and fear upon facing mathematical problems or numbers) among certain individuals. Over the last two decades, many studies have shown that learning mathematical and numerical concepts relies on many cognitive processes, including working memory, spatial skills, and linguistic abilities. In this

BACKGROUND: Beliefs about the instructional impact of teaching may shape how preservice classroom teachers respond to demanding mathematics teaching. Mathematics teaching anxiety and self-handicapping also play an important role. The present study tested a two-wave mediation model examining the mediating roles of anxiety related to teaching and anxiety related to subject knowledge in the relationship between mathematics teaching outcome expectancy and self-handicapping.
METHODS: A total of 180 Turkish preservice classroom teachers (130 female), aged 18-27 (M age = 21.78, SD = 1.96), participa

What are the underlying neurocognitive mechanisms that give rise to mathematical competence? This study investigated the relationship between tests of mathematical ability completed outside the scanner and resting-state functional connectivity (FC) of cytoarchitectonically defined subdivisions of the parietal cortex in adults. These parietal areas are also involved in executive functions (EFs). Therefore, it remains unclear whether there are unique networks for mathematical processing. We investigate the neural networks for mathematical cognition and three measures of EF using resting-state fM

This paper describes various kinds of learning disability. It is suggested that the connection between mathematical difficulties and dyslexia has been largely overlooked by educators. Students' failure to understand how the number system works and the resultant failure to appreciate place values account for many of the mathematical difficulties experienced by dyslexic learners.

Mathematics and science are highly integrated disciplines, but the brain association between mathematics and science remains unclear. The current study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans of 34 undergraduates (17 males, mean age = 20.3±1.64 years old) while they completed mathematical, physical and chemical principles, arithmetic computation, and sentence comprehension. We examined neural activation level, neural activation pattern, and neural connectivity to investigate the neural associations between mathematics and science (including physics and chemistry). The results s

The prevalence of disorders of arithmetic skills in children of circa 6 % calls for intensive consideration of the subject by health care providers and researchers. The necessity of interdisciplinary cooperation is evident. The current classifications by the ICD-10 (Specific disorder of arithmetic skills) and DSM-IV (Mathematics disorder) represent different viewpoints. A developmental dyscalculia is exclusively diagnosed according to clinical presentation. Arithmetic and its disorders are brain functions, determined and influenced by the (cerebral) human development. With modem neuroimaging t

A measles outbreak occurred in the Kirinyaga District in February, 1985. Immunization coverage against measles was above 80% in the district and increased by age. The immunization against measles was lowest (46%) in the age group (8-11) months and highest (90%) in the (36-59) months age group. However, the overall vaccine effectiveness in the childhood population (8-59) months was only 43.5% and peaked (91.5%) in the (24-35) months age group. Based on these and similar findings in some developed and developing countries the proposal for global measles eradication is suggestively premature and

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the factors influencing preservice teachers' anxiety about teaching mathematics within a theoretical framework. Drawing on Blömeke and Delaney's teacher competences model and Bandura's social cognitive theory, the research also incorporates expectancy-value theory to examine the link between attitudes and anxiety. Specifically, the indirect effects of mathematical literacy self-efficacy, mathematical thinking, and mathematical language self-efficacy on mathematics teaching anxiety were explored through attitudes toward mathematics courses and mathematics educ

Opportunities for practice play a critical role in learning complex behaviors. In the context of explicit mathematics instruction, practice facilitates systematic opportunities for students with mathematics difficulties (MD) to learn new mathematics content and apply such knowledge and skills to novel mathematics problems. This study explored whether there is an optimal amount of student practice that teachers should provide in core mathematics instruction to maximize the mathematics achievement of kindergarten students with MD, a so called "Goldilocks effect," as opposed to simply "more is be

INTRODUCTION: Digital technologies offer dynamic representations, immediate feedback, and autonomous inquiry in mathematics learning. Yet the association between ICT use and mathematical literacy may depend on students' psychological resources and emotions. Drawing on social cognitive theory, this study examined the indirect roles of mathematics self-efficacy and mathematics resilience and the moderating role of mathematics anxiety.
METHODS: Data were drawn from 34,406 students in PISA 2022 from Japan, Korea, Singapore, Macao, Chinese Taipei, and Hong Kong. Observed-variable path analysis tes

Research rarely focuses on how deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students address mathematical ideas. Complexities involved in using sign language (SL) in mathematics classrooms include not just challenges, but opportunities that accompany mathematics learning in this gestural-somatic medium. The authors consider DHH students primarily as learners of mathematics, and their SL use as a special case of language in the mathematics classroom. More specifically, using SL in teaching and learning mathematics is explored within semiotic and embodiment perspectives to gain a better understanding of how u

In this synthesis, we reviewed 65 studies involving elementary students (i.e., grades 1-5) identified with mathematics difficulty (MD) in which authors implemented a mathematics intervention. Of these studies, we identified 33 group designs, 9 quasi-experimental designs, and 23 single-case designs. We aimed to synthesize performance differences between students with MD with and without reading difficulty (RD). We identified three categories of students for analysis: Students with MD+RD, MD-alone, or MD-nonspecified (i.e., no reading information provided). Overall, 80% of studies included stude
