Are maxillary sinus variations related to maxillary sinus diameters?

OBJECTIVES: The reasons why the maxillary posterior region is challenging for dentists are its structure and anatomical variations. For this reason, it is necessary to have complete knowledge about the anatomy of this region. In dentistry, necessary information for the desired evaluation in this region can be provided by CBCT. The fact that it provides a three-dimensional evaluation and has measurement reliability emphasizes its importance in surgical applications. The septa, haller cell, and accessory ostium are variations of the maxillary sinus. There are few studies in the literature examin

An Anatomic Study on the Maxillary Sinus Mucosal Thickness and the Distance between the Maxillary Sinus Ostium and Sinus Floor for the Maxillary Sinus Augmentation.

Background and objectives: The average rate of chronic sinusitis after maxillary implantation was approximately 5.1%. However, the evidence of predictive risk factors for sinusitis after implantation is lacking. The aim of this study was to perform an anatomic study on the maxillary sinus mucosal thickness (MSMT), the distance between the maxillary sinus ostium and sinus floor (MOD), and the MSMT/MOD ratio as a preoperative risk indicator for sinusitis after maxillary dental implantation. Materials and Methods: Between October 2008 and October 2019, all patients referred to the otolaryngology

[Radicality of maxillary sinus surgery and size of the maxillary sinus ostium].

Until the 1990s, radical sinus surgery was considered a standard procedure for maxillary sinus diseases, but it is no longer favored due to the high morbidity. Today, functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is considered the gold standard in sinus surgery. Modifications of surgical approaches also allow access to regions of the maxillary sinus that were previously difficult to reach. Depending on anatomy and pathology, different methods for widening the maxillary ostium can be selected. In type I sinusotomy, the natural ostium is widened dorsally by a maximum of 1 cm. Sinusotomy type II inv

Maxillary sinus augmentation.

The placement of endosseous implants in posterior edentulous maxilla is normally a challenging task in implant dentistry due to maxillary sinus pneumatization. Various sinus augmentation techniques have been used with impressive success rates aimed at developing these sites for implant placement. Knowledge of anatomy of maxillary sinus guides us not only in proper preoperative treatment planning but also helps us to avoid the possible complications that may arise during sinus augmentation procedure. This topic attracts a rising number of publications with most of them reporting results that su

[Maxillary sinus myxoma].

Myxoma is a slow growing, benign neoplasm, which pathogenesis still remains disputed. The lesion has well-defined borders but a true capsule is absent. Because of that myxoma can be locally invasive causing bone destruction. A change is mainly observed among persons between 20-30 years of age and is very uncommon in the pediatric population. Most myxomas are observed in myocardium, but rarely may also manifest in the head and neck region. In the paper we describe an unusual case of myxoma of maxillary sinus in a female infant. Diagnostic challenges, treatment, outcome, post-operative follow-up

Maxillary Sinus Augmentation.

The clinician contemplating reconstruction of the posterior maxilla with osteointegrated implants must overcome a number of anatomic challenges. Buccolingual and/or apico-occlusal atrophy of the edentulous ridge and pneumatization of the maxillary sinus often limit the volume of bone available for implant placement. Many clinicians advocate augmentation of the maxillary sinus to increase the dimension of available bone for implant placement. A female patient aged 38-year old was undergone maxillary sinus augmentation (sinus lifting) after improper implant placing in upper right molar area. Car

Maxillary sinus augmentation.

Pneumatization of the maxillary sinus secondary to posterior maxillary tooth loss is an extremely common finding. Significant atrophy of the maxilla prevents implant placement in this region. For several decades, sinus augmentation has been used to develop these sites for dental implant placement. The main techniques for increasing the vertical bone height of the posterior maxilla are the transalveolar and lateral antrostomy approaches. The clinical and radiographic examinations dictate the appropriate method for each clinical situation. Both techniques have been shown to have high success rat

Maxillary sinus hypoplasia.

Maxillary sinus hypoplasia (MSH) is an uncommonly encountered condition by otolaryngologists. The computerized tomography (CT) scans provide valuable data about the anatomic details of the paranasal sinuses. MSH may be misdiagnosed as an infection or a neoplasm of the maxillary sinuses. Variations of the other paranasal structures, especially the uncinate process associated with MSH were defined. MSH shows three distinct hypoplasia patterns. Type I MSH characteristics are mild hypoplasia of the maxillary sinus, normal uncinate process and a well-developed infundibular passage. Significant hypo

Maxillary sinus schwannoma.

Schwannoma (neurilemmoma) is a benign tumour that arises from the Schwann cells which cover the nerve sheaths of the peripheral or autonomic nervous system especially the sympathetic system. Reported cases of schwannoma arising from the sinonasal tract are rare. We report a case of a 28-year-old man who presented to otolaryngology-head and neck surgery clinic with left cheek swelling and left-sided nasal obstruction for 1-year period. Endoscopic examination and high-resolution CT scan revealed a homogenous expansile mass occupying the left maxillary antrum extending to the left orbit and left

Maxillary sinus aplasia.

PURPOSE: A case of unilateral aplasia is reported. Associated anatomical anomalies and review of the literature is described, and a comparison with maxillary sinus hypoplasia is made. PATIENT: A 40-year-old male was complaining of an esthetic "defect" in his face. There was an antero-posterior depression in the left infraorbital region. Computed tomography showed absence of the left maxillary antrum, uncinate process, and maxillary infundibulum. The ipsilateral orbit was increased in volume inferiorly, and the inferior margin was immediately adjacent to the root of the inferior turbinate. The

Maxillary sinus haematoma.

The maxillary sinus haematoma is an uncommon cause of a maxillary sinus mass. It presents with a variety of symptoms, the most common being epistaxis. Although histologically benign, it may be clinically progressive. Radiological findings can range from a benign appearance to a more aggressive process, including bony erosion. Surgical evacuation is the mainstay of therapy. We describe our experience in managing this condition and review available literature on the subject.

Maxillary sinus mucopyoceles.

Mucopyoceles of the maxillary sinus are seen rarely, and their origin has been the subject of much controversy. Three cases are reported herein, accompanied by a review of the literature, to clarify some aspects of their cause, diagnosis and treatment. It has been concluded that the most common cause of mucopyoceles is trauma, whether accidental or iatrogenic (ie, due to surgery performed on the affected sinus), and that the best surgical approach is a wide Caldwell-Luc sinusectomy.

Postoperative maxillary cyst after maxillary sinus augmentation.

The posterior edentulous maxilla is a critical anatomic region for dental implant therapy. Because of severe alveolar bone resorption and maxillary sinus pneumatization, low bone volume is often presented clinically. Although maxillary sinus augmentation has been developed to promote bone reconstruction and oral rehabilitation, complications have been reported. Possible complications include paranasal sinusitis, loss of the graft, and displacement of an implant into the antrum. In this study, we present an observed rare complication of maxillary sinus augmentation, a postoperative maxillary cy

Ethmomaxillary sinus and hypoplasia of maxillary sinus.

In a series of 410 coronal CT scans performed to assess paranasal sinus disease, we have identified eight cases in which an ethmomaxillary sinus was present. The ethmomaxillary sinus was unilateral in five cases and bilaterally present in three. The sex incidence was equal. Four patients had generalized mucosal disease of their paranasal sinuses which included the ethmomaxillary sinus whereas four patients had osteomeatal complex disease and sparing of their ethmomaxillary sinus. The characteristic radiological features of an ethmomaxillary sinus were drainage into an enlarged superior meatus,
