Oncocytic carcinoma of the maxillary sinus: a rare neoplasm.

Oncocytic neoplasms are tumors composed of oncocytes (i.e., epithelial cells with a large cytoplasm that is rich in mitochondria). Most cases are benign and originate from the major salivary glands, while the minor salivary glands are rarely involved. Occurrence of oncocytic carcinoma (or malignant oncocytoma) within the sinonasal tract is an unusual event. We report a rare case of maxillary sinus oncocytic carcinoma occurring in a 45-year-old male. Biopsy was consistent with an unspecified salivary gland neoplasm. The patient underwent total maxillectomy through a lateral rhinotomic approach;

[History of treatment and classification of maxillary sinus neoplasms].

History of treatment of maxillary malignant neoplasms goes back to the middle of 19th century, when Gensoul and Lizzard performed their first maxillectomy. However the development of maxillar surgery is connected with achivements of Moure, who as the first one characterized and applied innovative skin cut on the face. Author presents the history of other surgical procedures in therapy of maxillary tumors and describes methods which are apply nowaday. Attention is paid to the Polish contributions and accomplishments in diagnostics and treatment of tumors localized in this area. The classificati

Infrastructure maxillectomy for maxillary sinus and hard palate neoplasms.

Infrastructure maxillectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the lower part of the maxilla and hard palate. The objective of the present study was to analyze clinical data and treatment outcome of patients who underwent infrastructure maxillectomy between 2011 and 2019. A total of 13 patients who underwent infrastructure maxillectomy for maxillary sinus and hard palate neoplasms between 2011 and 2019 were analyzed. These patients were subdivided into maxillary sinus neoplasm (n=5) and hard palate neoplasm (n=8) groups. All patients except one underwent infrastructure maxillectomy using the su

Chronic maxillary sinusitis masquerading as a maxillary sinus neoplasm: A case report.

Chronic inflammatory diseases of the maxillary sinus can present well-defined, expansile radiolucent features, necessitating differential diagnosis from true neoplasms. Pleomorphic adenoma, although rare, is one of the neoplasms included in the list of differential diagnoses, and it may occasionally arise in the maxillary sinus. However, inflammatory conditions such as mucoceles, postoperative maxillary cysts and chronic bacterial maxillary sinusitis can also cause thinning and expansion of the sinus walls due to prolonged obstruction. The present study describes a case of chronic maxillary si

Mesenchymal phosphaturic neoplasm in the maxillary sinus: a case report.

The authors describe a case of oncogenic osteomalacia due to a mesenchymal phosphaturic tumour in the maxillary sinus. This is a paraneoplastic syndrome in which a tumour produces a peptide hormone-like substance (phosphatonin) that causes a urinary loss of phosphates resulting in a debilitating systemic condition. In this case, the patient experienced muscle stiffness, reduction of muscle tone, loss of weight and pathological fractures. Clinical and radiological examination revealed a tumour in the right maxillary sinus; all other results were negative. The diagnosis following pathology exami

SMARCB1 (Integrase Interactor 1)-Deficient Sinonasal Carcinoma of the Maxillary Sinus: A Newly Described Sinonasal Neoplasm.

SMARCB1 (integrase interactor 1) is a tumor suppressor gene encoded on chromosome 22q11.2 that encodes a core subunit of SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complexes and plays a critical role in regulating gene expression and chromatin structure. We describe a case of SMARCB1 (integrase interactor 1)-deficient sinonasal carcinoma of the left maxillary sinus in a 63-year-old woman with an initial presentation of numbness of the maxillary teeth and facial swelling.

[Diseases of the maxillary sinus: an overview].

Because of the intimate relationship between the maxillary teeth and the maxillary sinus, it is no surprise that odontogenic infections, odontogenic cysts and tumours which have their origin in the mucosa and the bone of the maxilla may extend into the maxillary sinus and, occasionally, into the nasal cavity. Diseases of the maxillary sinus can also extend into the oral cavity and can cause symptoms that mimic those of odontogenic diseases. Important diseases of the maxillary sinus are maxillary sinusitis, oroantral communications, antroliths, cysts and neoplasms.

Aplasia and hypoplasia of the maxillary sinus: A case series.

Maxillary sinus aplasia and hypoplasia are rare conditions that can cause symptoms such as headaches and voice alteration. The majority of patients are asymptomatic, but these conditions must be noticed for importance of differential diagnosis such as infection and neoplasms. Conventional radiographs could not differentiate between inflammatory mucosal thickening, neoplasm, and hypoplasia of the sinus. Computed tomography (CT) and also cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) are the proper modalities to detect these conditions. In the present study, CBCT findings of three cases with maxillary sin

Mesenchymal phosphaturic tumour: early detection of recurrence.

The case of a recurrent phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour of the maxillary sinus 10 years after the first surgical excision is reported. The neoplasm first presented with paraneoplastic osteomalacia causing a pathological femur fracture. A right maxillary sinus tumour was identified and treated thereafter. The patient had no local symptoms and serum electrolytes returned to normal after surgical removal of the tumour. However, 10 years later, the patient's urine Ca and P levels increased and an octreoscan detected a new tumour in the right maxillary sinus. Early diagnosis prevented the effects o

Non-epithelial tumors of the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx: a clinicopathologyic study. VIII. Adipose tissue tumors (lipoma and liposarcoma).

In a study of 256 non-epithelial neoplasms involving the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx, only two lesions were classified as adipose tissue tumors (one lipoma and one liposarcoma). The lipoma was found incidentally when tissue removed from the maxillary sinus was studied histologically, the patient having been treated with a Caldwell-Luc procedure for maxillary sinusitis. The liposarcoma produced a large mass involving the nasal cavity, maxillary sinus, ethmoid area, hard palate and maxillary, temporal and sphenoid bones. The tumor extended into the cranial cavity and eventual

Sino nasal undifferentiated carcinoma: A rare entity.

Malignant neoplasms of the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity are rare, comprising only 3% of all head and neck malignancies. This includes both primary sinonasal neoplasms and metastatic disease. We present the case of a patient with a maxillary soft tissue swelling, which proved to be a rare malignant tumor of maxillary sinus origin, a sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma.

Aplasia of the Maxillary Sinus, a Large Periapical Cyst in the Maxillary Arch, and a Swimming ‎and Kissing Molar: A Rare Case Report.

Aplasia of the maxillary sinus and hypoplasia are rare conditions that can trigger symptoms such as headaches and altered speech. Most patients are asymptomatic, but given the role of these symptoms in the differential diagnoses for neoplasms and infection, such symptoms warrant investigating. We present a rare case of a young man with hypoplasia of the maxillary sinus on the left side with a large periapical cyst on the right side, diagnosed via a routine cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). This case discusses the role of CBCT in investigating aplasia of the maxillary sinus.

Evaluation of the Prevalence of Maxillary Sinuses Abnormalities through Spiral Computed Tomography (CT).

Introduction Maxillary sinus disease is common and numerous disorders can affect this anatomical area. Abnormalities can be classified as: non-neoplastic, neoplastic benign, and neoplastic malignant. Objective Evaluate through CT the prevalence of diseases in maxillary sinuses, using the Radiology Department's database of a hospital in São Paulo city. Methods The sample consisted of 762 facial CT scans that we divided into three groups: Group A (12-19 years old); Group B (20-49 years old); Group C (above 50 years old); and male or female. We considered the following pathological processes: I -

Infrasellar craniopharyngioma presenting as epistaxis, excised via Denker's medial maxillectomy approach.

Infrasellar craniopharyngioma is an uncommon neoplasm. Rarely, it presents with epistaxis. To date, 39 cases of infrasellar craniopharyngioma have been reported in the world literature. Involvement of the maxillary sinus has only been reported once. We report a second case exclusively involving the nasal cavity, ethmoid sinus and maxillary sinus. Excision was performed using a Denker's medial maxillectomy approach.

Paranasal sinus radiology, Part 4A: Maxillary sinuses.

The maxillary sinus is frequently involved by inflammatory change. It is also the sinus that is most affected by intrinsic or nearby neoplasms. Since neoplasia and inflammatory disease may mimic each other, radiologic examination often becomes the principal means of differentiating them. Principles of radiologic diagnosis, with attention to changes in the various bony margins in maxillary disease processes, form the basis of this article.

Inflammatory pseudotumour of the maxillary sinus mimicking malignancy.

Inflammatory pseudotumours of the paranasal sinuses are rare entities and can be easily confused with aggressive malignant tumours. In this report we describe the characteristic behavior of inflammatory pseudotumours in the maxillary sinus. We present a case of a 47-year-old Caucasian woman, who presented in our ENT department because of progressive nasal obstruction, epistaxis, and epiphora. The clinical as well as the radiological findings suggested a maxillary sinus neoplasm, most probably of malignant nature. The histopathological examination showed an inflammatory pseudotumour of the maxi
