We sought to evaluate the effect of (125)I radioactive seed implantation combined with prosthesis denture on the treatment of oral and maxillofacial malignancy. For this purpose, 10 patients with glandule palatine malignancy were selected and subjected to the treatment plan of radioactive seed implantation during CT examination. All patients were treated as follow. The tumor tissues were extracted first. After 2 weeks, radioactive seeds were implanted in the palatine tissue and the prosthesis denture was made and worn for the tissue defect. Several radioactive seeds were still embedded in the

Radiation-induced sarcoma represents an exceptional rarity in the head and neck region. The treatment is surgical excision with negative margins and follow-up. After surgery, reconstruction of the defects can be accomplished either surgically or prosthetically. Implant-retained maxillofacial prostheses may offer an acceptable solution. In this report, a large facial defect resulting from radiation-induced leiomyosarcoma was reconstructed with implant-retained prosthesis. A patient with a large facial defect resulting from tumor surgery presented for reconstructive treatment. The primary tumor

An implant-retained maxillofacial overdenture with a pharyngeal speech aid prosthesis was fabricated for a patient with a nonsurgically treated cleft palate who was unable to achieve velopharyngeal closure. Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing were used to fabricate a metal-reinforced prosthesis using the Ivotion Denture System and subtractive manufacturing with geographic guides. Magnetic attachments were incorporated to improve the retention and stability of the prosthesis. Masticatory function, deglutition, and esthetics were found to be improved at the 6-month follow-up.

Fabricating maxillofacial prosthesis can be challenging. Placement of implants can have a dramatic effect on the stability and retention of the prosthesis in patients. This article provides clinical retrospective analysis of osseointegrated implants used for maxillofacial reconstruction. Patient charts and radiographs were reviewed to determine implant status, stability of prosthesis, and masticatory and speech function. Of the 104 implants placed, there were 4 implant failures. The overall survival rate for implants in this patient population was 96.1%. The stability of maxillofacial prosthes

Neoplasms, congenital disorders, fungal infections, and traumatic injuries are the predominant causes of orbital defects. Various retentive mechanisms such as application of adhesive, utilization of mechanical undercuts, and implant-supported attachments are generally used in the maxillofacial prosthesis. In the orbital region, the result of magnet-retained attachments is favorable compared with other mechanisms. Different advantages of the magnet-retained prosthesis are less manual dexterity needed during insertion or removal and better maintenance of hygiene. The skin-implant interface and t

Prosthetic rehabilitation is an option available for patients with extensive maxillofacial defects with the ability to restore esthetics and function. The surgical procedure can result in anatomical and functional sequelae leading to functional, psychological and aesthetic disorders. This clinical case report describes the unique and highly-specialized fabrication method of an oral and facial prosthesis for a patient with a near total maxillectomy, excision of upper lip, rhinectomy and radiotherapy for treatment of an extensive malignant neoplasm. Four carefully placed zygomatic implants were

INTRODUCTION: Maxillofacial trauma is associated with severe loss of soft and hard tissues that lead to aesthetic and functional disfigurements, adverse psychological impacts on the patient's general and oral health, and decreased quality of life. Therefore, treatment of maxillofacial trauma is challenging.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present three patients with maxillofacial trauma owing to road traffic accidents that were rehabilitated by immediate use of loaded fixed corticobasal implant-supported prostheses with follow-up periods of 6, 5, and 7 years. All treated patients had a 100 % implant

Maxillofacial prosthetics is an important and recognized sub-discipline of prosthodontics that forms a key component of postgraduate training programmes. General dentists have a role to play in the management of maxillofacial defect patients even though treatment usually requires a multidisciplinary approach in an institutional environment. Maxillofacial prosthetic cases frequently present with complex histories but simple patient goals. The conservatively managed implant-retained auricular prosthesis, speech aid prosthesis and orbital prosthesis cases described in this report were completed i

Traditionally, patients with maxillofacial defects have been challenging to treat. A multitude of challenges associated with maxillofacial prosthetic treatment are not typically seen with patients who need conventional prosthodontic treatment. These types of patients generally require replacement of significant amounts of hard and soft tissues than do conventional prosthodontic patients. Most maxillofacial patients also warrant more emotional support than do conventional prosthodontic patients. Successful maxillofacial prosthetics still need to embrace the traditional goals of prosthodontic tr

The reconstruction of maxillofacial bone defects by the intraoperative modeling of implants may reduce the predictability of the esthetic result, leading to more invasive surgery and increased surgical time. To improve the maxillofacial surgery outcome, modern manufacturing methods such as rapid prototyping (RP) technology and methods based on reverse engineeing (RE) and medical imaging data are applicable to the manufacture of custom-made maxillary prostheses. After acquisition of data, an individual computer-based 3D model of the bony defect is gernerated. These data are tranferrred into RE

A 39-year-old woman who had undergone fibular flap reconstruction and simultaneous implant placement after the surgical removal of a cemento-ossifying fibroma was experiencing mild discomfort 3 years later and requested an implant-supported prosthesis to restore her edentulous left maxillary quadrant. Initially, an interim removable partial denture was provided and later duplicated with clear resin. The interim prosthesis identified the excessive thickness of the grafted cutaneous soft tissue and the inadequate emergence angle of the nonfunctioning implants. By using the interim prosthesis as

Microtia is a major congenital anomaly of the external ear. It includes a spectrum of deformities from a grossly normal but small ear to the absence of the entire external ear. These deformities account for three in every 10,000 births, with bilaterally missing ears seen in fewer than 10% of all cases. Extraoral implant-retained ear prosthesis has been proven to be a predictable treatment option for rehabilitation of such congenital anomalies. This paper aims to present principles of maxillofacial implants, review of literature, advantages, disadvantages, and considerations in treatment planni

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have been published about the prosthetic rehabilitation of the postoncological maxillo-facial patient, but the guidelines that emerge lack a correlation between the anatomical classification of the treated site, which generally is preparatory upon surgery, and the type of prosthetic rehabilitation appropriate to the new anatomical and functional condition. With this correlation, it would be possible to obtain a multidisciplinary and predictable therapeutic process, able to identify from the beginning the best type of prosthetic rehabilitation.
METHODS: The authors

Prosthetic rehabilitation of facial defects has always perplexed maxillofacial prosthodontists. Facial defects lead to functional and cosmetic deficiencies. Early rehabilitation improves patients' quality of life. Osseointegrated rehabilitation of the maxillofacial prosthetic patient presents the potential for overcoming many of the disadvantages associated with conventional retentive methods. This paper presents the clinical report of a patient who had undergone partial rhinectomy due to basal cell carcinoma. Following post-surgical healing, the patient was rehabilitated with a temporary acry

An improvement of prognosis after tumour therapy as well as a rather high number of multiple traumas in the craniofacial area imply a high treatment need for craniofacial tissue defects. For a successful rehabilitation of these individuals, reconstructive oral and maxillofacial surgery and prosthodontics must collaborate closely and synergistically. Besides medical and psychological findings, functional and esthetical aspects need to be taken into account. In this case report the prosthetic reconstruction of a patient with a tooth-supported telescopic defect prosthesis in the maxilla and with
