The study included 17 patients with facial paralysis (FP) (10 male, 7 female) aged 47.6 +/- 21.0 years. Twelve of the 17 patients had Bell's palsy. The other causes of FP were as follows: one, polyradiculoneuritis; one, war injury; one, cerebrovascular accident; one, sarcoidosis; and one, dermatomyositis. Spirometry and maximal respiratory pressures (PImax and PEmax) were performed with three different techniques: without holding the lips, with patient holding lips, and with technician holding lips. We observed significant differences for PImax and PEmax among the three methods. There were no

OBJECTIVES: Maximal respiratory pressures are key indicators of respiratory muscle strength; however, reference equations and cut-offs to define respiratory muscle weakness are scarce in the European paediatric population. The aim was to create sex-specific reference equations for maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures (PImax/PEmax) in a large sample of healthy children and to objectively establish cut-offs to define respiratory muscle weakness.
METHODS: A multicentre cross-sectional study was conducted across 14 Spanish centres. Healthy children aged 6-18 years, stratified by sex and a

Respiratory muscle weakness has attracted attention because sarcopenia and respiratory muscle dysfunction may play a key role in the development of respiratory failure. To evaluate respiratory muscle strength appropriately, individual factors such as sex, age, body size, and ethnicity should be considered. This study aimed to compare equations available in Japan and other countries for predicting respiratory muscle strength. We tested 21 equations for maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and 17 for maximal expiratory pressure (MEP) for each sex (76 equations in total) in 159 normal, healthy subj

Inspiratory muscle strength most often is better reflected by sniff Pes than PImax against occlusion. Furthermore, sniff Pes can be estimated noninvasively by the measurement of sniff Pmo in normal subjects and in patients with respiratory muscle weakness. The aim of this study was to compare sniff Pmo and P.PImax to assess inspiratory muscle strength in patients with acute respiratory failure. The highest pressure was produced by P.PImax in 61 percent of measurements, and by sniff Pmo in 39 percent. Above 35 cm H2O P.PImax yielded the highest pressure in 55 percent of cases and the ratio snif

BACKGROUND: Inspiratory muscle strength in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can be affected by mechanical factors which influence the length of the diaphragm, and by non-mechanical factors. The aim of the present study was to evaluate firstly the effects of body position on respiratory pressures and, secondly, to determine the relative contribution of age, body mass index (BMI), lung volumes, and arterial blood gas tensions to respiratory muscle strength.
METHODS: Thirty male patients with stable COPD (mean FEV1 40.4% predicted) participated in the study. Maximal ins

INTRODUCTION: Maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures (PImax/PEmax) reference equations obtained in healthy people are needed to correctly interpret respiratory muscle strength. Currently, no clear cut-off points defining respiratory muscle weakness are available. We aimed to establish sex-specific reference equations for PImax/PEmax in a large sample of healthy adults and to objectively determine cut-off points for respiratory muscle weakness.
METHODS: A multicentre cross-sectional study was conducted across 14 Spanish centres. Healthy non-smoking volunteers aged 18-80 years stratified

AIM: The availability of diverse assessment methods, based on different devices and conditions, for respiratory sarcopenia is crucial for developing community health initiatives. Thus, in this study, we aimed to compare the concordance in diagnosing respiratory sarcopenia based on the maximal respiratory pressure (MRP) and peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR), which are specific indicators of respiratory-muscle strength, in a community-dwelling older adult population.
METHODS: In the Otassha Study conducted in 2023, 499 community-dwelling adults aged >65 years in Itabashi Ward (184 men and 315 wo

We hypothesized that during high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV), a reduction of peak-to-peak oscillatory pressure along the endotracheal tube is maximal when respiratory system compliance is maximal. We made a mathematical model of the endotracheal tube and the respiratory system of a neonate suffering from idiopathic respiratory distress syndrome (IRDS). The model consisted of linear viscous and inertive elements, a non-linear endotracheal tube resistance, and a non-linear compliance allowing for alveolar recruitment and overdistention. Respiratory compliance was maximal at the tran

Respiratory muscle strength is a proven predictor of long-term outcome of neuromuscular disease (NMD), including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and spinal muscular atrophy. Maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP), a sensitive measure of respiratory muscle strength, one of several useful tests of respiratory muscle strength, is gaining interest as a therapeutic clinical trial endpoint for NMD. In this comprehensive review we investigate the use of MIP as a measure of respiratory muscle strength in clinical trials of therapeutics targeting respiratory muscle, examine the

PURPOSE: To analyze the effect of inspiratory muscle training (IMT) on the maximal inspiratory mouth pressure (MIP) and performance of elite swimmers.
METHODS: Eight participants performed a 3000-m swimming test (T-3000), followed by blood lactate measurements at 1 and 5 minutes postexercise.. The testing protocol was carried out before and after 6 weeks of IMT, in which a high-volume IMT group (HV-IMT) (n = 4) performed IMT twice a day-in the morning in a seated position and in the afternoon in a concurrent session of IMT and core muscle training. Also, a low-volume IMT group (LV-IMT) (n = 4

In neuromuscular disease, the precise relationship between general and respiratory muscle weakness is at present unclear. That relationship and the influence on respiratory muscle strength of such factors as type and duration of neuromuscular disease, distribution of general muscle weakness, and nutritional status were studied in 30 patients with stable chronic neuromuscular disease not presenting with respiratory symptoms. The degree of general muscle weakness was assessed by clinical examination of the strength of 17 muscle groups, yielding a general muscle strength index. The degree of resp

Infectious mononucleosis (IM) is common among students. These patients often complain of fatigue and dyspnea. To determine whether IM alters respiratory function, we performed spirometric, single-breath diffusing capacity, and maximal static respiratory pressure tests on seven patients with symptoms of IM. These studies were repeated two weeks later and the respiratory pressures were repeated five months later. Each patient served as his own control. Pulmonary function was normal except for respiratory pressures, which were initially low. These pressures, still low after two weeks, improved si

We report a case of a 26 year old man who was diagnosticated of ALS. This case is a graphic example of the pulmonary function evolution through the flow-volume loop. In the first study the espirometric values were in the normal range. The Static pulmonary pressures were weackle decreased. This was the only sign of respiratory muscle impairement. Its important to study close enough the pulmonary function through the flow/volume loop, maximal respiratory pressures and maximal voluntary Ventilation in order to know the empairment rate, and also to detect intercurrent procedures as bulbar involvem

Because of its potential relevance to heavy exercise we studied the ventilatory muscle function of five normal subjects before, during, and after shortterm near-maximal voluntary normocapnic hyperpnea. Measurements of pleural and abdominal pressures and diaphragm electromyogram (EMG) during hyperpnea and of maximum respiratory pressures before and after hyperpnea were made at four levels of ventilation: 76, 79, and 86% maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV) and at MVV. Measurements of pleural and abdominal pressures and diaphragm electromyogram (EMG) during hyperpnea and of maximum respiratory pr

In amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), early recognition of nocturnal hypoventilation (NH) is essential to start noninvasive ventilation (NIV), but nocturnal transcutaneous PCO2 (PtcCO2) is difficult to monitor. Usefulness of respiratory and muscular function test in the prediction of NH has been explored without distinguishing among ALS phenotypes. We evaluated cross-sectional relationships between functional tests and nocturnal PCO2, and the best predictors of NH, separately in patients with spinal and bulbar onset of ALS. Methods: ALS patients candidate to NIV were recruited. Diurnal respi

We determined the effect of lung recruitment and oscillation amplitude on regional oscillation volume and functional residual capacity (FRC) in high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) used in pre-term infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Changes in lung volume, oscillation volume and carbon dioxide levels were recorded in 10 infants during a stepwise recruitment procedure, and an increase in pressure amplitude of 5 cmH(2)O was measured using electrical impedance tomography and transcutaneous monitoring. The pressures at maximal respiratory system compliance, maximal oscillat

OBJECTIVE: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is characterized by damage to muscles including the muscles involved in respiration. Dystrophic muscles become weak and infiltrated with fatty tissue, resulting in progressive respiratory impairment. The objective of this study was to assess respiratory muscle quality and function in DMD using magnetic resonance imaging and to determine the relationship to clinical respiratory function.
METHODS: Individuals with DMD (n = 36) and unaffected controls (n = 12) participated in this cross sectional magnetic resonance imaging study. Participants underwen
