Maytenus ilicifolia Mart. is used in Brazilian herbal medicine particularly for stomach disorders, but it is also used, as in other parts of South America, for fertility control. To verify its potential as an abortifacient, the lyophilized hydroalcoholic extract of its leaves was administered orally at a dose of 1000 mg/kg/day to mice between the first and third day of pregnancy (DOP), between the forth and sixth DOP, or between the seventh and ninth DOP. The extract caused a pre-implantation embryonic loss, but it did not have an effect on implantation or organogenesis. Morphological alterati

Maytenus quadrangulata occurs naturally in the Brazilian biomes Caatinga and Atlantic Forest, and previous studies have demonstrated its potential as a source of bioactive molecules. In light of this, a phytochemical study of the chloroform extract of Maytenus quadrangulata branches was carried out, yielding the new triterpene 30-oxo-2,3-seco-lup-20-(29)-ene-2,3-dioic acid (1) and a mixture containing the new semisynthetic triterpene 25-hydroxy-7-oxofriedelan-3α-yl acetate (2). In addition, seven known compounds were also obtained: friedelan-3-one (3), friedelan-3β-ol (4), friedelan-3α-ol (5),

Maytenus quadrangulata is a species endemic to the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. While the pharmacological potential of the Maytenus genus is well-documented, specific phytochemical studies on M. quadrangulata remain limited, although previous investigations have identified triterpenes with significant cytotoxic effects. In this study, five new acetylated triterpenoid derivatives, namely, friedelane-3α,29-diyl diacetate (1), friedelane-3α,11β-diyl diacetate (2), friedelane-3α,25-diyl diacetate (3), 3β-hydroxyfriedelane-24-yl acetate (4), and 11β-hydroxyfriedelane-3α-yl acetate (5), were obtained

Maytenus dhofarensis Sebsebe (Celestraceae) is a naturally growing shrub in Oman. It is not a reputed medicinal plant in Oman, but it is regionally endemic and causes shivering attacks on goats that graze on it. The chemical investigation of the hexane and chloroform extracts of the fruits and stems of M. dhofarensis afforded dihydro-β-agarofuran-type sesquiterpene pyridine alkaloid (1), lupanyl myristoate (2) and lignanolactone (3). Compounds (1-3) are new isolates from M. dhofarensis. The structures of these compounds were assigned through comprehensive IR, NMR, and ESI-MS analyses, and the

Maytenus robusta (Celastraceae) is used in folk medicine for the treatment of stomach ulcers and is very well adapted to the South of Brazil. Maytenus ilicifolia is the main species of the Celastraceae family, and is used in the treatment of gastric ulcers. However, Maytenus ilicifolia is presently at the stage of extinction, due to indiscriminate use in Brazil. Thus, the use of Maytenus robusta in phytotherapeutic preparations, instead of Maytenus ilicifolia, is suggested. However, there have been no reports regarding the antiulcer activity of Maytenus robusta extract. Therefore, this study w

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Maytenus robusta Reissek (Celastraceae) is traditionally used in Brazilian folk medicine to treat gastric ulcer, as a substitute for M. ilicifolia, which is almost extinct. The gastroprotective properties of M. robusta were demonstrated previously using only preventive approaches, such as acute gastric ulcer models. However, the healing effect of M. robusta in gastric ulcers remains unclear.
AIM OF THE STUDY: The current study was carried out to investigate the healing effectiveness of M. robusta hydroalcoholic extract (HEMR) from aerial parts in the acetic aci

The hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and aqueous-soluble fractions from leaves of Maytenus robusta (Celastraceae) were evaluated for their protective actions against ethanol-induced gastric lesions in rats. The treatment with all fractions (150 mg/kg) and omeprazol (30 mg/kg) significantly reduced the lesion index, the total lesion area, and the percentage of lesion, in comparison with the control group (p<0.05). Since the ethyl acetate-soluble fraction was found to be most active in the pylorus ligated model, this fraction was further investigated and resulted in the isolation of triterpene

Diarrhea continues to be one of the top causes of death in children under the age of five, particularly in developing nations. In Ethiopian traditional medicine, a variety of medicinal plants are used to treat diarrhea. One of these plants is Maytenus addat (Loes.) Sebsebe (fam. Celastraceae), which is endemic to the Afromontane forests, especially along forest margins, of Ethiopia. The air-dried powdered leaves of M. addat were macerated with 80% methanol to yield a crude extract. Additionally, the powdered plant material underwent sequential solvent extraction using chloroform, methanol, and

We are trying to develop a model to assess properties of products utilized in popular medicine. Maytenus ilicifolia is used in herbal medicine. Red blood cells (RBC) labeled with technetium-99m (99mTc) are employed in nuclear medicine. This labeling procedure depends on a reducing agent and stannous chloride is used. There is evidence that this labeling may be altered by drugs. We have investigated the possibility of M. ilicifolia extract being capable to alter the labeling of blood elements with 99mTc. Blood was incubated with M. ilicifolia extract. Stannous chloride solution and Tc-99m were
