Mechanoreceptors in articular tissues.

The morphology, distribution, and function of mechanoreceptors in joint capsules, ligaments, knee-joint menisci, and articular disks of the temporomandibular joints of animals, including humans, have been reviewed. In addition to free nerve endings, three types of joint receptors are present in most animal joints: 1) a Ruffini-like receptor situated in the capsule, 2) a Golgi tendon organ situated in a ligament; and 3) the encapsulated Pacinian-like corpuscle. In the anterior cruciate ligament, nerve fibers enter from the subsynovial connective tissue and terminate in receptors. Most of the re

Histological identification of nasopharyngeal mechanoreceptors.

The auditory tube plays a fundamental role in regulating middle ear pressure. A "system" sensitive to a pressure gradient between the middle ear and the ambient environment is necessary. The presence of mechanoreceptors in the middle ear and the tympanic membrane has been studied, but the presence of these receptors in the nasopharyngeal region remains unclear. The aim of this study is to confirm the presence of pressure sensitive corpuscles in the nasopharynx. An experimental study was conducted on five fresh and unembalded human cadavers. The pharyngeal ostium of the auditory tube and its pe

Mechanoreceptors of the posterior cruciate ligament.

The mechanical role of the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments in the passive and functional stability of the knee joint has been well documented. Both these knee joint ligaments contain Ruffini, Pacinian, Golgi and free nerve endings with different capabilities of providing the central nervous system with information regarding movement and position as well as chemical events. The posterior cruciate ligament provides 95% of the restraining force to a posterior tibial displacement, is significantly stronger than the other knee ligaments, and sensory nerve endings are located in the tibia

Ultrastructures of mechanoreceptors in the oral mucosa.

The present review describes the fine structures of lamellated mechanoreceptive corpuscles, Merkel cell-neurite complexes and free nerve endings in the oral mucosae of mammals, with special attention to axon terminals and lamellar cells. The mechanoreceptive nerve endings of the oral mucosa were studied using histochemistry, immunohistochemistry and transmission electron microscopy techniques. The organized mechanoreceptive corpuscles are present in the mucosae of gingiva, cheek, tongue and soft and hard palate. They are elongated or globular in shape, being located in the connective tissue pa

Anatomical Characteristics of Tongue-Innervating Mechanoreceptors.

Mechanosensory innervation of the oral cavity enables us to detect the texture and location of the foods we consume. Our goal was to find a genetic identifier for a mechanoreceptive subtype. Toward this goal, we examined neurons expressing the neurotrophin receptor TrkC (TrkC-tdTomato), parvalbumin (Pvalb), or glutamate transporter, Vglut3. We found that the majority of Pvalb-lineage, Vglut3-lineage, and TrkC-tdTomato neurons innervating the tongue are separate trigeminal neuron populations. Because different papilla types contribute to food detection in different ways, we examined the innerva

Mapping regional laryngopharyngeal mechanoreceptor response.

OBJECTIVES: To map mechanoreceptor response in various regions of the laryngopharynx. METHODS: Five patients with suspected laryngopharyngeal reflux and six healthy control subjects underwent stimulation of mechanoreceptors in the hypopharynx, interarytenoid area, arytenoids, aryepiglottic folds, and pyriform sinuses. The threshold stimuli evoking sensation and eliciting laryngeal adductor reflex were recorded. RESULTS: In controls, an air pulse with 2 mmHg pressure evoked mechanoreceptor response in all regions, except bilateral aryepiglottic folds of one control. In patients, stimulus inte

Periodontal mechanoreceptors and bruxism at low bite forces.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we examined if 6-9 Hz jaw tremor, an indirect indicator of Periodontal Mechanoreceptor (PMR) activity, is different in bruxists compared to healthy participants during production of a low-level constant bite force. METHODS: Bite force and surface EMG from the masseter muscle were recorded simultaneously as participants (13 patients, 15 controls) held a force transducer between the upper and lower incisors very gently. RESULTS: Tremor in 6-9 Hz band for bruxists was greater on average compared to controls, but the difference was not significant, both for force record

Response characteristics of cutaneous mechanoreceptors in neuropathic rats.

The activity of single myelinated afferents was recorded from dorsal roots L4-5 in normal Sprague-Dawley rats and animals that developed mechanical hypersensitivity following ischemic injury to the sciatic nerve. The mechanical response properties and conduction velocity of afferents conducting through the injury site (about 50% of units) were similar to controls. However, the majority of afferents not conducting through the injury site exhibited ongoing activity. The results suggest that mechanical allodynia may be at least partly due to the central integration of activity arising from these

Mechanoreceptors in collateral knee ligaments: an animal experiment.

The mechanoreceptors in the collateral ligaments of the knee joint in rat hindlimbs were studied. In group II (n=10) the femoral and obturator nerves were sectioned. In both groups III and V (n=20) the sciatic nerve was sectioned. In group V (n=10) the sectioned sciatic nerve was sutured 4 weeks after sectioning. In group IV (n=10) all three nerves were sectioned. Group I (n=10) served as control. After 4 months all animals were killed. The ligaments of the knee joint were preserved and stained with gold chloride, paraffin-embedded and cut in sagittal serial sections. The results showed that 4

Does Stimulation of Plantar Mechanoreceptors Alter Visual Spatial Localization?

Objectives: Few studies have previously shown an interaction between feet and gaze in postural control. The aim of the current study is to more specifically examine how vertical heterophoria (VH) varies with stimulation of the mechanoreceptors in the foot sole. A new method is proposed for fast assessment of minimum VH, especially when values are less than 1/2 diopter (pD). Methods: The Maddox rod test was used to assess VH with a new device made of a small point source of light located in the center of a circular box that enables the measurement of minimum VH. The VH assessment was based on a

The mechanoreceptor Piezo is required for spermatogenesis in Bombyx mori.

BACKGROUND: The animal sperm shows high diversity in morphology, components, and motility. In the lepidopteran model insect, the silkworm Bombyx mori, two types of sperm, including nucleate fertile eupyrene sperm and anucleate unfertile apyrene sperm, are generated. Apyrene sperm assists fertilization by facilitating the migration of eupyrene spermatozoa from the bursa copulatrix to the spermatheca. During spermatogenesis, eupyrene sperm bundles extrude the cytoplasm by peristaltic squeezing, while the nuclei of the apyrene sperm bundles are discarded with the same process, forming matured spe

Sensory Innervation of the Larynx and the Search for Mucosal Mechanoreceptors.

Purpose The larynx is a uniquely situated organ, juxtaposed between the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts, and endures considerable immunological challenges while providing reflexogenic responses via putative mucosal mechanoreceptor afferents. Laryngeal afferents mediate precise monitoring of sensory events by relay to the internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (iSLN). Exposure to a variety of stimuli (e.g., mechanical, chemical, thermal) at the mucosa-airway interface has likely evolved a diverse array of specialized sensory afferents for rapid laryngeal control. Accordingly, m

Mechanoreceptors sensitive to flow at the gastroduodenal junction of the cat.

Vagal afferent activity was recorded from the cervical vagus simultaneously with intraluminal pressure and flow rate at the proximal duodenum, in cats anesthetized with pentobarbital sodium. Thirty-seven mechanoreceptors that adapted slowly to maintained pressure changes were found to be sensitive to the flow of saline through the pylorus. The passage of liquid was associated with an increase of pressure equal to one-tenth of that necessary to trigger a response of the receptors during the distension of a small balloon. The frequency of discharge was increased by the passage of liquid for posi

Immunohistochemical Investigation of Mechanoreceptors Within the Injured Scapholunate Ligament.

PURPOSE: Scapholunate ligaments (SLLs) play a well-established role in maintaining carpal alignment and kinematics, and are innervated with sensory mechanoreceptors located within the ligaments. They are involved in the afferent arc of dynamic wrist stability. The aim of this study was to describe the changes in these mechanoreceptor populations in injured SLLs. METHODS: Injured SLLs were collected from human wrists at the time of SLL reconstruction or limited wrist fusion, where the ligament remnants would otherwise be discarded. These specimens were formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded for

Activation of renal mechanoreceptors increases vasopressin release in rabbits.

Electrical stimulation of afferent renal nerves increases plasma vasopressin (AVP) concentration, but the role of these nerves in the control of AVP release is not known. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of activation of renal mechanoreceptors and chemoreceptors on plasma AVP concentration in anesthetized rabbits. Intrapelvic pressure was increased to activate renal mechanoreceptors, and the renal pelvis was perfused with 1.0 M NaCl, 0.1 M KCl, and 1.0 M mannitol solutions to activate R2 chemoreceptors. With increased pelvic pressure, plasma AVP concentration increase
