Safe, effective, and reversible immobilization protocols are essential for the management of free-ranging red wolves (Canis rufus). Combinations using an alpha2-adrenoceptor agonist and ketamine have been shown to be effective for immobilization but are not reversible and can produce severe hypertension and prolonged or rough recoveries. To minimize hypertension and provide reversibility, 24 red wolves were immobilized using three medetomidine-butorphanol (MB) combinations without the use of ketamine in the initial injection. All wolves were administered medetomidine (0.04 mg/kg i.m.) and buto

The sedative effect of medetomidine was evaluated in 6 male Awassi sheep. Medetomidine at 40 micrograms/kg, i.m. induced sedation and recumbency in the sheep within 9 +/- 1 and 17 +/- 4 minutes, respectively. The duration of recumbency was 58 +/- 1 minutes. Medetomidine produced good analgesia and marked muscle relaxation in the recumbent animals for 30 to 45 minutes. The side effects of medetomidine were bradycardia, respiratory depression, stasis of the rumen with tympany, salivation and polyuria. The animals recovered from the sedative and side effects of medetomidine 1.5 to 2 hours after g

The study was designed to determine the effects of two protocols of sedation, medetomidine and medetomidine-butorphanol, on cerebral blood flow (CBF) by transcranial color-coded Duplex ultrasonography in healthy dogs. Transcranial Doppler ultrasonographic examination was performed in 20 dogs before and 20 min after sedation with either medetomidine (group 1) or medetomidine-butorphanol (group 2). The left and right middle cerebral arteries (LMCA and RMCA) were evaluated using the temporal windows, and the basilar artery (BA) was studied through the suboccipital window. Peak systolic velocity (

Twenty-six adult semi-free-ranging Bennett's wallabies were anesthetized. Animals in group MA received medetomidine 0.1 mg/kg and alfaxalone 4 mg/kg i.m. in a 5-ml dart, whereas those in group MK received medetomidine 0.1 mg/kg and ketamine 5 mg/kg i.m. in a 3-ml dart. Dosages were based on estimated body weights. The wallabies were allowed to recover spontaneously or, if still nonresponsive at the end of the procedure, were given atipamezole 0.5 mg/kg (half the dose via i.m. and the other half via i.v.). Heart rate and respiratory rate were monitored at 5-min intervals, temperature at 10-min

The effects of intramuscularly administered medetomidine and butorphanol (MB), and medetomidine, butorphanol, atropine (MBA) on glomerular filtration rate (GFR) were determined in six dogs as measured by 99m-Tc-labeled diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (99mTc-DTPA) nuclear scintigraphy. Direct systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial blood pressures and heart rate were measured at regular time intervals before, during, and after GFR calculations. The mean GFR measurement following MB was significantly greater (4.44 ml/min/kg) than following MBA (3.82 ml/min/kg) or saline treatment (3.41 ml/min/

Medetomidine is an FDA-approved α2-adrenoreceptor (α2-AR) agonist used as a veterinary sedative due to its analgesic, sedative, and anxiolytic properties. While it is marketed for veterinary use as a racemic mixture under the brand name Domitor, the pharmacologically active enantiomer, dexmedetomidine, is approved for sedation and analgesia in the hospital setting. Medetomidine has recently been detected in the illicit drug supply alongside fentanyl, xylazine, cocaine, and heroin, producing pronounced sedative effects that are not reversed by naloxone. The pharmacological effects along with th

Seven sheep were sedated 3 times: with medetomidine (15 micrograms kg-1), with midazolam (0.1 mg kg-1) and with a combination of the drugs. All drugs were administered intravenously. Heart and respiratory rates were measured. Arterial blood samples were collected, and PaO2, PaCO2, pH, haemoglobin concentration and saturation, and base excess were determined. Systolic and mean arterial pressures were recorded before and after the treatment with medetomidine-midazolam. Midazolam increased the time of recumbency induced by medetomidine. After administration of midazolam alone, 4 of the 7 sheep we

The medetomidine/ketamine combination was evaluated as an anaesthetic in cats undergoing ovariectomy. It was compared with acepromazine/ketamine, xylazine/ketamine and zolazepam/tiletamine combinations. 60 animals, divided into 6 groups of 10 animals were involved. Medetomidine highly potentiated the anaesthetic effects of ketamine and balanced the two main disadvantages of this drug: weak muscle relaxation and poor analgesia in deep organs. 80 micrograms medetomidine/kg--5 mg ketamine/kg provided a duration of anaesthesia longer than 1 mg acepromazine/kg--10 mg ketamine/kg, and not significan

Sedative effects of medetomidine, a potent selective and specific alpha 2-adrenoceptor agonist, were evaluated in pigs using 5 different doses (30, 50, 80, 100 and 150 micrograms/kg of body weight) and compared with those of xylazine (2 mg/kg). Atropine (25 micrograms/kg) was mixed with both drugs to prevent severe bradycardia. All drugs were administered intramuscularly. Medetomidine at a dosage of 30 micrograms/kg produced more potent sedation than xylazine. The depth of sedation induced by medetomidine was dose dependent within the range from 30 to 80 micrograms/kg. At 100 or 150 micrograms
