Media exposure to bioterrorism: stress and the anthrax attacks.

This study examined media exposure and adjustment to anthrax bioterrorism attacks and the terrorist attacks on 9/11 in a sample of 300 people who lived distant from the attacks. Measures of direct and indirect exposure to terrorism, perceived risk of anthrax exposure, psychological distress, and outlook were assessed at 2 to 3 months and at 8 months after the first reported anthrax attack. Initial anthrax media exposure was a powerful predictor of distress, whereas subsequent anthrax media exposure only predicted negative changes in outlook over time. Perceived risk of anthrax exposure predict

Characterizing In Vivo Exposure to Alcohol Content in the Media: Media Platform, Engagement, and Associations With Attitudes.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-related content in media is overwhelmingly presented positively, and exposure to this content is linked to adolescent drinking. Yet, less is known about how often adolescents encounter alcohol content via media, how exposure varies across platforms, and how adolescents typically engage with such content. We used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methods to collect detailed, real-time data about alcohol-related content encountered across a variety of digital media sources. METHODS: High school students recruited through social media (N = 302; mean age = 16.2; 63.9% fema

Does Media Literacy Mitigate Risk for Reduced Body Satisfaction Following Exposure to Thin-Ideal Media?

Exposure to thin-ideal media can contribute to increased body dissatisfaction in adolescent girls. Understanding the factors that may prevent or exacerbate the negative effects of media exposure on body dissatisfaction is important to facilitate prevention of these problems. This study evaluated the effects of exposure to thin-ideal media images on body image in three instructional set experimental conditions: appearance comparison, peer norms, and control. An important aim was to examine baseline levels of media literacy as a protective factor and trait thin-ideal internalization and trait up

Media exposure predicts children's reactions to crime and terrorism.

In this study we examined reactions to 3 news events (September 11 terrorist attacks, Summer 2002 kidnappings, and Fall 2002 sniper shootings) in a national, representative sample of children aged 2 to 17. Media exposure was related to increased worry and changes in activities, with September 11 creating the most concern and shootings the least. More signs of stress were apparent among 10- to 13-year-olds, minority children and those of low socioeconomic status, children with prior adversities, and children who lived in close geographical proximity. Girls aged 10 to 17 had more reaction to the

Fate and transport of mercury in environmental media and human exposure.

Mercury is emitted to the atmosphere from various natural and anthropogenic sources, and degrades with difficulty in the environment. Mercury exists as various species, mainly elemental (Hg(0)) and divalent (Hg(2+)) mercury depending on its oxidation states in air and water. Mercury emitted to the atmosphere can be deposited into aqueous environments by wet and dry depositions, and some can be re-emitted into the atmosphere. The deposited mercury species, mainly Hg(2+), can react with various organic compounds in water and sediment by biotic reactions mediated by sulfur-reducing bacteria, and

Effects of media exposure on adolescents traumatized in a school shooting.

This study analyzes the impact of the media on adolescents traumatized in a school shooting. Participants were trauma-exposed students (n = 231) and comparison students (n = 526), aged 13-19 years. A questionnaire that included the Impact of Event Scale and a 36-item General Health Questionnaire was administered 4 months after the shooting. Being interviewed was associated with higher scores on the Impact of Event Scale (p = .005), but posttraumatic symptoms did not differ between those who refused to be interviewed and those not approached by reporters. Following a higher number of media outl

Exposure limits for occupational and environmental chemical pollutants in various media.

Exposure limits for occupational and environmental chemical contaminants are based on animal experimentation and observation in humans. Usually, the final recommendations are "predictions" which can hardly guarantee the absolute safety for all. Late effects were discovered to lately in the past. The impact of the biotransformation of pollutants on their biological activity is demonstrated with trichloroethylene, styrene and N,N-dimethylformamide, which are suspected of having carcinogenic potential. In addition, trichloroethylene and N,N-dimethylformamide cause intolerance of alcohol with hype

[How Dangerous is Exposure of the Kidneys to Contrast Media? Strategies of Nephroprotection].

Contrast enhanced imaging was introduced over 90 years ago and has led to unprecedented triumphs in diagnostics testing, as well as in therapeutic and interventional procedures. At the same time, contrast agent exposure has been increasingly blamed for acute renal failure, particularly in hospitalised patients, and since the late 1970s. As a result, there has been a large number of studies on the toxicity of different contrast agents and on nephroprotection with various methods and substances. New studies have provided information on both the toxicity to the kidneys and the methods and substan

Digital media exposure, trust, and preventive behaviors during COVID-19 pandemic.

This study investigates how digital media exposure is associated with individuals' psychological responses and behavioral adaptation during crises. Building on the Extended Parallel Process Model (EPPM), the study provides an empirical examination of the associations among perceived severity, perceived susceptibility, perceived self-efficacy, response efficacy, trust in government, social trust, and preventive behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposed conceptual model was tested using structural equation modeling (AMOS-SEM 22) based on cross-sectional survey data collected online in

Risk of otitis media in offspring following maternal prenatal stress exposure.

OBJECTIVES: There is limited but consistent evidence that suggests prenatal factors, including maternal stress, may contribute to susceptibility for otitis media. We aimed to determine the effect of multiple life stress events during pregnancy on risk of acute and recurrent otitis media in offspring at three and five years of age. METHODS: Exposure data on stressful life events were collected from pregnant women in a longitudinal prospective pregnancy cohort study, at 18 and 34 weeks' gestation. We used longitudinal regression models stratified by offspring sex to examine associations between

Role of gambling media exposure in influencing trajectories among college students.

In the study, a model of the relationship between mass media depictions of gambling and subsequent gambling attitudes and behavioral intentions of college students was developed. A survey was conducted with 229 undergraduate students (79.5% female, mean age = 20.5, SD = 2.04) enrolled in three different communication courses at a large southeastern university. Through structural equation analysis, the six hypotheses of this study were analyzed using the method of maximum likelihood with AMOS 6. The model was consistent with the hypotheses that media exposure impacts gambling attitudes and beha

Hypersensitivity to iodinated contrast media: diagnostic evaluation and re-exposure outcomes.

Background. Iodinated contrast media (ICM) are widely used and generally safe, although hypersensitivity reactions (HSR) may occur. This study aimed to characterize the allergological workup of patients with suspected ICM HSR and evaluate outcomes after re-exposure. Methods. We conducted a unicentric  retrospective study of patients referred between January 2012 and December 2024 for suspected ICM HSR. Diagnosis was confirmed by suggestive clinical history (CH) with positive skin tests (skin prick, intradermal, and/or patch tests), with or without positive basophil activation test (BAT) or lym

Two Japanese Infants With Hypothyroidism Following Exposure to Iodinated Contrast Media.

We report 2 Japanese infants with hypothyroidism requiring levothyroxine (LT4) replacement therapy following exposure to iodinated contrast media (ICM). Patient 1 was born at 32 weeks gestation. He had congenital heart disease and underwent contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) on day 22 (estimated amount of iodine: 600 mg/kg/dose). The newborn mass screening showed normal thyrotropin (thyroid-stimulating hormone; TSH) levels at day 4, but high TSH and low free thyroxine levels on retest at day 44. LT4 replacement therapy was administered on days 46 to 74. No hypothyroidism requiring LT4

A greater modulation of the visual and fronto-parietal networks for children in a post-media versus pre-media exposure group.

AIM: Media use in children has exploded in the past several decades, most recently fuelled by portable electronic devices. This study aims to explore differences in functional brain connectivity in children during a story-listening functional MRI (fMRI) task using data collected before (1998) and after (2013) the widespread adoption of media. METHODS: Cross-sectional data were collected from English-speaking 5- to 7-year-old children at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, USA, of a functional MRI narrative comprehension task completed in 1998 (n = 22) or 2013 (n = 25). Does the media (also) keep the score? Media-based exposure to the Russian-Ukrainian war and mental health in Portugal.

The Russian-Ukrainian war (RUW) is responsible for extensive individual suffering and a socio-economic impact on the world and is reshaping global affairs. Many studies have focused on direct exposure to conflict and several public health policies have been devised. Nonetheless, indirect exposure through media has received minimal attention and there is limited evidence that mental health symptoms and disorders may arise as a result. We explored the role of voluntary or involuntary media-based exposure to the RUW on individuals' mental health including stress symptoms, coping strategies, daily

Exposure to hate in online and traditional media: A systematic review and meta-analysis of the impact of this exposure on individuals and communities.

THE PROBLEM: People use social media platforms to chat, search, and share information, express their opinions, and connect with others. But these platforms also facilitate the posting of divisive, harmful, and hateful messages, targeting groups and individuals, based on their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or political views. Hate content is not only a problem on the Internet, but also on traditional media, especially in places where the Internet is not widely available or in rural areas. Despite growing awareness of the harms that exposure to hate can cause, especially to victims
