Overview of high-risk medical device recalls in obstetrics and gynecology from 2002 through 2016: implications for device safety.

The field of women's health has endured numerous recent controversies involving medical devices such as pelvic meshes, laparoscopic morcellators, and a hysteroscopic sterilization device. With the recent passage of the 21st Century Cures Act, new legislation will change how the Food and Drug Administration regulates medical devices. Given these controversies and new changes, we investigated high-risk, class I recalls in women's health from 2002 through 2016. Class I recalls for medical devices are defined by the Food and Drug Administration as the most serious recall events and are designated

Characterization of US Food and Drug Administration Class I Recalls from 2018 to 2022 for Moderate- and High-Risk Medical Devices: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Medical device recalls are initiated in response to safety concerns. Class I (highest severity) recalls imply a reasonable likelihood of serious adverse events or death associated with device use. Recalled devices must be identified, assessed, and corrected or removed, upon which a recall can be terminated. OBJECTIVE: To characterize Class I medical device recalls and corresponding recalled devices. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of Class I recalls posted on the Food and Drug Administration's annual log from January 1, 2018 to June 30, 2022 for moderate-risk and high-r

Research: Evaluation of Orthopedic Hip Device Recalls by the FDA from 2007 to 2017.

BACKGROUND: Medical device recalls have increased in the previous two decades. Orthopedic devices are estimated to constitute 12% of all medical devices recalled. Medical devices enter the market via the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) premarket approval (PMA) or 510(k) pathways. This article evaluates orthopedic hip device recalls between Jan. 1, 2007, and Dec. 31, 2017. We hypothesized that the 510(k) approval process would have substantially higher recall rates for defective devices. METHODS: The FDA's device recall database was queried for all orthopedic hip devices from Jan. 1, 20

Radiation Oncology Device Recalls (2015-2025): Software and Artificial Intelligence as Emerging Drivers of Postmarket Safety.

PURPOSE: Radiation oncology (RO) relies on complex devices spanning simulation, planning, delivery, and verification, making postmarket surveillance critical. Prior analyses of U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalls (2002-2015) demonstrated a high recall burden, predominantly driven by software-related failures. Following recent technological advances, including rapid expansion of software systems and artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled tools, we analyzed RO device recalls from 2015 to 2025 to investigate if this has resulted in a proportional increase in recalls. METHODS AND MATERI

Use of Recalled Devices in New Device Authorizations Under the US Food and Drug Administration's 510(k) Pathway and Risk of Subsequent Recalls.

IMPORTANCE: In the US, nearly all medical devices progress to market under the 510(k) pathway, which uses previously authorized devices (predicates) to support new authorizations. Current regulations permit manufacturers to use devices subject to a Class I recall-the FDA's most serious designation indicating a high probability of adverse health consequences or death-as predicates for new devices. The consequences for patient safety are not known. OBJECTIVE: To determine the risk of a future Class I recall associated with using a recalled device as a predicate device in the 510(k) pathway. DE

The Psychological Impact of Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators: A Narrative Review.

Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) are critical to the prevention of sudden cardiac death caused by life-threatening arrhythmias such as ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation. While their clinical value is well-established, the psychological impact of living with an ICD remains underrecognized. Patients often experience anticipatory anxiety, depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and reduced quality of life. These challenges can begin before implantation, persist after both appropriate and inappropriate shocks, and be worsened by fears of device malfunction, recalls,
