Proceedings : a conference of the American Medical Informatics Association. AMIA Fall Symposium1997eng
This paper describes a way to map users' queries to relevant Medical Subject Headings (MeSH terms) used by the National Library of Medicine to index the biomedical literature. The method, called SENSE (SEarch with New SEmantics), transforms words and phrases in the users' queries into primary conceptual components and compares these components with those of the MeSH vocabulary. Similar to the way in which most numbers can be split into numerical factors and expressed as their product--for example, 42 can be expressed as 2*21, 6*7, 3*14, 2*3*7,--so most medical concepts can be split into "seman

Journal of oral pathology & medicine : official publication of the International Association of Oral Pathologists and the American Academy of Oral Pathology2025eng
BACKGROUND: Despite recent advancements in the understanding and classification of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD), their terminology remains inconsistent and heterogeneous throughout the scientific literature, thus affecting evidence-based decision-making relevant for clinical management of these disorders. Updating this classification represents a necessity to improve the indexing and retrieval of OPMD publications, in particular for systematic reviews and meta-analysis.
METHODS: Through a critical appraisal of the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and Excerpta Medica Tree (EMTREE

OBJECTIVES: Although the concept of overdiagnosis was first referenced in MEDLINE 100 years ago, consensus on a clear definition has been lacking. In 2021, the MeSH term "Overdiagnosis" was officially introduced, which defined the concept. A key goal of the new term is to improve the reliability of literature searches and enhance the conceptual understanding of overdiagnosis.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic bibliometric review of all citations indexed under the MeSH term for "Overdiagnosis" in MEDLINE. We compared the citations with citations identified through a text-word search for overd

Biomedical relation classification has been significantly improved by the application of advanced machine learning techniques on the raw texts of scholarly publications. Despite this improvement, the reliance on large chunks of raw text makes these algorithms suffer in terms of generalization, precision, and reliability. The use of the distinctive characteristics of bibliographic metadata can prove effective in achieving better performance for this challenging task. In this research paper, we introduce an approach for biomedical relation classification using the qualifiers of co-occurring Medi

Major research and implementation efforts have been devoted to indexing articles according to the major topics discussed, but much less effort to indexing their publication types and study designs (collectively, PTs). In this Perspective, we discuss how indexing PTs differs from topical Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) indexing and requires a different approach. Rather than focus on the technical aspects of machine learning-based indexing models, we emphasize the goals and purposes for which biomedical articles are indexed, and the surprisingly thorny question of how indexing systems should be e

Researchers seek to identify optimal journals for submission based on their studies but tend to rely on journal impact factors or scientific journal rankings. We investigated research trends by selecting high-frequency words from author keywords (AKs), analyzing subject areas, and performing quantitative data analysis of Korean dental journals. Consequently, we suggest a method for choosing journals that fit a specific subject area.We used a corpus of 9 Korean dentistry journals regarded in Korea as quality internationally approved journals. AKs occurring more than 10 times were assigned to Me

BACKGROUND: Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a genetic disorder in which the renal tubules become structurally abnormal, resulting in the development and growth of multiple cysts within the kidneys. Numerous studies on PKD have been published in the literature. However, no such articles used medical subject headings (MeSH terms) to predict the number of article citations. This study aimed to predict the number of article citations using 100 top-cited PKD articles (T100PKDs) and dissect the characteristics of influential authors and affiliated counties since 2010.

Patient narratives on social networks contain large amounts of objective information, such as the descriptions of examinations and interventions. Sentiment analysis (SA) models are mostly used to evaluate the conveyed sentiments by patients in these narratives to assess positive or negative clinical outcomes or to judge the impact of a drug or a medical condition. To date, many state-of-the-art SA models often result in false assessment coverage due to the natural medical entities recognition deficiency and ambiguity problem. In this work, we propose a semisupervised-based neural sense disambi

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis Vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by keratinocyte hyperproliferation. Bibliometric analysis helps determine the most influential article on the topic of "Psoriasis Vulgaris and biological agents (PVBAs)", and what factors affect article citation remain unclear. This study aims (1) to identify the top 100 most cited articles in PVBA (PVBA100 for short) from 1991 to 2020, (2) to visualize dominant entities on one diagram using data in PVBA100, and (3) to investigate whether medical subject headings (MeSH terms) can be used to predict article citations

Biomedical literature has enormously grown in the last decades and become broadly available through online databases. Ad-hoc search methods, created on the basis of research field and goals, are required to enhance the quality of searching. Aim of this study was to formulate efficient, evidence-based PubMed search strategies to retrieve articles assessing etiologic associations between a condition of interest and hypothalamic-pituitary disorders (HPD). Based on expert knowledge, 17 MeSH (Medical Subjects Headings) and 79 free terms related to HPD were identified to search PubMed. Using random

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, inflammatory and debilitating dermatosis characterized by painful nodules, sinus tracts and abscesses in apocrine gland-bearing areas that predominantly affect women worldwide. New therapeutic interventions based on the clinical manifestations of patients have recently been introduced in numerous articles. However, which countries, journals, subject categories, and articles have the ultimate influence remain unknown. This study aimed to display influential entities in 100 top-cited HS-related articles (T100HS) and investigate whether medi

BACKGROUND: Papilledema must be managed distinctly from other causes of optic disc edema (ODE) due to its basis in raised intracranial pressure (ICP). However, evidence indicates that the term "papilledema" is widely misused across specialties to describe ODE without raised ICP. Sources of this misconception remain undiscerned. Because all physicians consult medical databases, our objective was to evaluate whether nonspecific "papilledema" subject heading definitions misleadingly associate articles on other conditions with papilledema proper.
METHODS: Systematic review of case reports, prospe

Biomedical literature can offer valuable information for organizing genes associated with the etiology and pathogenesis of disease. In this study, we demonstrate the utility of existing phylogenetic methods for organizing 375 genes associated with Breast Cancer using the MeSH annotations from over 35,000 Medline articles. Specifically, we compare the clustering (using the Colless Imbalance Index, Ic) of distance-based methods, which are used by popular phylogenetic clustering algorithms, and a character- based method (Maximum Parsimony) that is commonly used for phylogenetic studies.
