Psychology's medicalization of male baldness.

Male baldness is physically benign though it is increasingly described as a "disease" based on claims that it is profoundly distressing. The medicalization of baldness was assessed using data extracted from a review of 37 male baldness psychosocial impact studies. Findings revealed most studies likely had commercial influences (78%), represented baldness as a disease (77%), were conducted on biased samples (68%), and advocated for baldness products/services (60%), omitting their limitations (68%). Health psychologists should challenge baldness medicalization so that men can make informed choic

The medicalization of compulsive buying.

Compulsive buying has recently been the subject of numerous articles from both consumer research and psychiatric perspectives. Identified by some researchers as a compulsion and by others as an addiction, common solutions to the problem have included drug treatments, participation in self-help groups and cognitive behaviour therapy. The purpose of this article is to examine critically the labelling of compulsive buying in terms of medicalization from the perspective of both medical and non-medical social control of "deviant" consumers. We suggest that the attempt to categorize compulsive buyin

[Ethics and prevention of medicalization].

Society has shifted issues of subjective and social reality of the population into the medical field, with the obsession with perfect health becoming a predominant pathogenic factor in the increase in the number of diseases and patients, while the level of health in the population is improving. The power of medicine has made the idea of «medicalising» various aspects of life that can be perceived as medical problems as attractive even when it is not the case. Living entails times of unhappiness and anguish but, should we treat these episodes? We are in the health culture of «everything, here a

Normal isn't normal: On the medicalization of health.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the proportion of the U.S. population classified as healthy based on 10 common indicators, examined in two ways: (1) above or below (in the healthy direction) the sample median (termed "normal"), and (2) below diagnostic cut-off points for clinical caseness or high risk (termed "ideal"). METHODS: Data are from the 2017-March 2020 round of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Sample sizes ranged from 3,956 to 8,961 for respective health indicators, with a total of 3,102 respondents for two weighted multi-item measures described belo

Medicalization as a moral problem for preventative medicine.

Preventive medicine is sometimes criticised as it contributes to medicalization of normal life. The concept 'medicalization' has been introduced by Zola to refer to processes in which the labels 'health' and 'ill' are made relevant for more and more aspects of human life. If preventive medicine contributes to medicalization, would that be morally problematic? My thesis is that such a contribution is indeed morally problematic. The concept is sometimes used to express moral intuitions regarding the practice of prevention and health promotion. Through analysis of these intuitions as well as some

The Medicalization of Loneliness: Addressing Social Ills through Healthcare.

Amidst reports on social isolation and loneliness's (SIL) link to poor health and mortality, the former U.S. Surgeon General and others declared SIL a public health priority and encouraged healthcare professionals to act. The medicalization of SIL differs from previous cases because it focuses on a social ill instead of a supposed disease, reflecting concurrent efforts by U.S. government and healthcare organizations to address social determinants of health through healthcare. Drawing on trends in journalistic, medical, and academic publications, content analysis of written materials, and inter

Alternative visions: The strategic partial medicalization of ibogaine treatment.

Ibogaine is a psychedelic substance classified as an illegal drug that has been found to have addiction interrupting properties. Over decades of uncontrolled experimentation, user groups in semi-clandestine networks have developed treatment protocols for substance abuse disorder using ibogaine. However, in the ongoing psychedelic renaissance, investors and startups are exploring the possibilities of using ibogaine or chemical analogs in mainstream therapy. This medicalization of ibogaine is viewed with ambivalence among ibogaine providers. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with providers,

Transgender medicalization and the attempt to evade psychological distress.

In this paper the author argues that trans-identification and its associated medical treatment can constitute an attempt to evade experiences of psychological distress. This occurs on three levels. Firstly, the trans person themselves may seek to evade dysregulated affects associated with such experiences as attachment trauma, childhood abuse, and ego-alien sexual feelings. Secondly, therapists may attempt to evade feelings, such as fear and hatred, evoked by engaging with these dysregulated affects. Thirdly, we, as a society, may wish to evade acknowledging the reality of such trauma, abuse a

Born in the USA. The medicalization of social problems.

As the debate over health care reform intensified a few years ago, Americans questioned their delivery system and pointed to Canada, Great Britain, and other countries as potential models for reform. NHA conducted its own examination of these models and concluded: the United States, and Michigan in particular, will have difficulty improving the health status of its citizens and controlling health care expenditures unless we more effectively deal with a uniquely American phenomenon--the medicalization of social problems.

Not Sick: Liberal, Trans, and Crip Feminist Critiques of Medicalization.

Medicalization occurs when an aspect of embodied humanity is scrutinized by the medical industry, claimed as pathological, and subsumed under medical intervention. Numerous critiques of medicalization appear in academic literature, often put forth by bioethicists who use a variety of "lenses" to make their case. Feminist critiques of medicalization raise the concerns of the politically disenfranchised, thus seeking to protect women-particularly natal sex women-from medical exploitation. This article will focus on three feminist critiques of medicalization, which offer an alternative narrative

Medicalization of psychoactive substance use and the doctor-patient relationship.

Any attempt at medicalization of cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and other psychoactive substances of abuse in the United States is likely to encounter strong opposition by many responsible physicians. Such opposition would be grounded in their perception that medicalization would be contrary to the purposes of medical practice. Most physicians would, however, be willing to consider prescribing such substances for pathological users if such prescribing took place within the context of a fully developed doctor-patient relationship in which the patient recognized the dependency as undesirable and wa

Feminist perspectives on labiaplasty: liberation, objectification, or medicalization of normal anatomy?

INTRODUCTION: Labiaplasty has expanded worldwide, provoking debate over whether it reflects women's liberation, reinforces objectifying beauty norms, or medicalizes normal vulvar variation. Clinicians lack integrative guidance linking outcomes with feminist ethical analysis. OBJECTIVES: To synthesize evidence on labiaplasty through feminist frameworks of liberation, objectification, and medicalization; evaluate functional, sexual, and psychological outcomes; and propose a clinical framework centered on relational autonomy and non-pathologizing education. METHODS: A narrative review of peer-r

[Gender performativity, medicalization and health in transsexual women in Mexico City].

The World Health Organization and the American Psychological Association consider transsexuality a pathology and suggest sex-gender reassignment for the biopsychic adjustment of trans people. Through the discursive analysis of experience, this study describes the processes of medicalization and gender performativity in relation to the health of a group of trans women from Mexico City. For this purpose, a qualitative study was conducted in which 10 semi-structured interviews were carried out in 2015. As part of medicalization, the pathologization of transsexuality generated psychic suffering; o

The medicalization of normal variants: the case of mitral valve prolapse.

Mild mitral valve prolapse, hypoglycemia, irritable colon, and premenstrual syndrome are examples of anatomico-physiologic phenomena that largely overlap with normal. Such "overlap syndromes" become labeled disease entities by the medical community through a process called medicalization. This report uses mitral valve prolapse (MVP) to exemplify the effects of medicalization on patients, physicians, and society. Ascertainment bias and insufficient controlled clinical studies have led to the description of a clinical entity replete with false associations (e.g., mitral valve prolapse syndrome)
