Copper (Cu) is an essential element to humans; however, exposure to elevated concentrations through occupational hazard and/or environmental means may be detrimental. This paper provides results of a cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence of copper sulphate (CuSO4) use in South African traditional medicine by traditional health practitioners (THPs) and details the use thereof. A total of 201 THPs were enrolled from two main municipal areas of KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa). Information on demographic characteristics of THPs, reasons for using or not using CuSO4 as well as admini

This paper examines whether traditional medicine promotes biopsychosocial fulfillment in African health and argues that every society has its own method of managing illness and of controlling the environment. The paper shows how each society functions within the constraints of its own unique system of social structure, language and communication, belief and customs, attitudes, behaviour and 'cultural facts' upon which health services are based. The concept, meaning and uses of traditional medicine are also discussed. It shows how traditional medicine can be used as a 'psychological opium' as a

Information on entomotherapy in Africa is fragmented across different countries, resulting in the lack of comprehensive documentation of the diversity of invertebrate species used in traditional medicine. This review systematically searched databases such as Google Scholar, Science Direct and Web of Science for articles published from 2000 to 2026 documenting the medicinal use of invertebrates in Africa. The search resulted in 21 eligible articles that listed 119 invertebrate species from 40 orders, as used in traditional medicine to treat 191 symptoms across 20 Sub-Saharan African countries.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Purgative enemas form an integral part of African traditional medicine. Besides possible benefits, serious health risks of rectal herbal therapy have been described in literature. To design appropriate health education programs, it is essential to understand traditional herbal practices and local perceptions of health and illness. Little is known about the herbal ingredients of enemas in Sub-Saharan Africa and consumers' personal reasons to use them.
AIM OF THE STUDY: To analyze the importance of enema use with regard to plant species used and illnesses treated

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Traditional medicines in the form of plants, animals and/or minerals are used by millions of South Africans. There is currently no data regarding the commonly used mineral elements thus the potential benefits or hazards of such products remain unclear.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Metal and crystalline salts were purchased from a rural market (Nongoma, Zululand, South Africa). Information regarding the colloquial name, price and weight was recorded. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) was used to quantatively determine the unknown salts.
RESULTS: Six widely a

ETHNOPHARMALOGICAL RELEVANCE: Malaria is one of the most prevalent and deadly parasitic diseases globally, with over 200 million new cases and nearly 500,000 deaths reported annually. It is estimated that approximately half of the world's population lives in malaria endemic areas. Malaria is substantially less prevalent in South Africa than in other African regions and the disease is limited to some regions of the Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal provinces. However, it still has a significant impact on the health of the populations living in those regions. Traditional medicines have long

The most common cause of monocular blindness in Africa is corneal opacification. Traditional eye medicines (TEM) are widely used in Africa and their use has been associated with corneal ulceration, however, no controlled studies of the effects of TEM on the cornea have been published. We conducted a case-control study of 39 patients with corneal ulcers matched to controls with severe conjunctivitis. Microbiological investigations were conducted on 20 cases. There was a significant association between corneal ulceration and TEM use and, in particular, peripheral corneal ulcerations were signifi

In a study carried out in two hospitals in South Africa the authors identified 20 children suffering from hepatic veno-occlusive disease thought to be caused by the administration of traditional remedies. The predominant clinical presentation was ascites of various degrees and hepatomegaly. There was a high morbidity and mortality in the young infants, and in those cases who survived and were followed up the clinical pattern was one of progression to cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Pyrrolizidine alkaloid poisoning is one of the causes of the veno-occlusive disease. Therefore there is a need

INTRODUCTION: Goats are an integral part of the livelihoods of South Africans, particularly in the rural communities, yet reproductive inefficiencies (low libido, poor semen quality, uterine infections, postpartum disorders, parasitism, and nutrition gaps) limit their productivity. Most resource challenged farmers resort to the use of ethnoveterinary plants for reproductive health of their goats due to their safety and ease of access; however, there is still a lack of standardization on their safety, dosing and efficacy.
AIM: This study aimed to review and document the South African tradition

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Human dermatophyte infections are one of the most common classes of infection globally, with an estimated 1.7 billion people contracting at least one infection annually. Southern African ethnic groups used multiple plants to treat dermatophytosis and to alleviate the symptoms, yet the anti-dermatophyte properties of most species remain poorly explored.
AIM OF THE STUDY: Our study aimed to critically review the literature to document southern African plant species used to treat one or more dermatophytic infections, and to summarise scientific evaluations of thes

In Uganda, as in many other African countries, herbal treatment of various diseases is still common. In the present study, 9 plant species collected from Tanzania and Uganda and used by traditional healers in southern-eastern Uganda for the treatment of human African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) were extracted and screened for their in vitro activity against Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense, one of the two causative agents of sleeping sickness. Eight lipophilic extracts of 5 plants revealed very promising antitrypanosomal activity with IC50 values below 1 microgram/ml; among them were ext

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Worldwide, more than three billion cases of parasitic disease are reported yearly and it is likely that this figure is substantially under-estimated. Approximately one in six people globally are estimated to be infected with at least one parasite species annually. In South Africa, the prevalence of Schistosoma haematobium (bilharzia) and intestinal worms and helminths are particularly high, especially in children and in crowded or poorer rural communities with inadequate sanitation and nutrition. Despite alarmingly high estimates, medical research into parasitic

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Boophone disticha is the most common member of the South African Amaryllidaceae used extensively in traditional medicine of the various indigenous population groups, including the Sotho, Xhosa and Zulu as well as the San. This survey was carried out to identify and highlight areas relevant to the traditional usage of Boophone disticha. Pharmacological aspects were examined with the purpose of reconciling these with the traditional usage of the plant. In relation to phytochemical make-up, particular attention was paid on how its alkaloid constitution might corrob

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the desire of the Ministry of Health to integrate Traditional African Medicine into the Official Health System remains limited by the lack of reliable data on several aspects of this medicine. This study aims to determine the perceptions of the Lubumbashi population towards Traditional African Medicine and the contexts of recourse to these therapeutic modalities. We conducted semi-structured interviews of population samples in each of the 7 Lubumbashi municipalities, which were semi-randomly selected in proportions to each population size, from January to J
