[Bloodletting therapy in medieval Arabic medicine].

In the tradition of Arabic medicine, bloodletting therapy was introduced through the centuries-long translation movement and systematically inherited from Galenic medical theory. As a result, it transcended the scope of early "Prophetic Medicine", and further incorporated its own clinical observations and anatomical practices, forming a distinctive therapeutic system that exerted a profound influence on the Latin West and even on early-modern medicine. A review of its development shows that it was continuously engaged in two-way exchanges with Western medicine. This historical perspective prov

Translation and validation of the Arabic version of generic medicines scale.

BACKGROUND: Generic drugs are considered the best alternative for the originator brand drugs because they have the same quality, safety, and efficacy yet offered at considerbaly lower cost. Prior research has developed instrumentation to assess patients' perceptions of generic drugs; however, little has been done to translate these measures in other languages. OBJECTIVES: This study's aim was to translate and validate an Arabic version of the generic drug scale (GMS) in a Jordanian sample. This was a cross-sectional study. METHODS: The English version of the GMS was translated to an Arabic v

Arab founder variants: Contributions to clinical genomics and precision medicine.

BACKGROUND: Founder variants are ancestral variants shared by individuals who are not closely related. The large effect size of some of these variants in the context of Mendelian disorders offers numerous precision medicine opportunities. METHODS: Using one of the largest datasets on Mendelian disorders in the Middle East, we identified 2,908 medically relevant founder variants derived from 18,360 exomes and genomes and investigated their contribution to the clinical annotation of the human genome. FINDINGS: Strikingly, ∼34% of Arab founder variants are absent in gnomAD. We found a strong co

An Analysis of Otolaryngology in Avicenna's Canon of Medicine: Utilizing the Original Arabic Text.

Avicenna authored The Canon of Medicine, a principal medical textbook for over 600 years. Our primary goal is to systematically review and translate relevant portions of The Canon in its original Arabic and correlate to Sardo's 2014 translation, focusing on otolaryngology, to present an accurate representation of Avicenna's impact and highlight notable discrepancies. Secondarily, we aim to review the literature for citations discussing Avicenna's contributions to otolaryngology and identify misinterpretations. Notably, Avicenna may have described the shape of the cochlea 500 years before its b

The Science of Sleep in Medieval Arabic Medicine: Part 1: Ibn Sīnā's Pneumatic Paradigm.

Modern sleep specialists are taught that, before the twentieth century, sleep was universally classified as a passive phenomenon with minimal to no brain activity. However, these assertions are made on the basis of particular readings and reconstructions of the history of sleep, using Western European medical works and ignoring works composed in other parts of the world. In this first of two articles on Arabic medical discussions on sleep, I shall show that sleep was not understood to be a purely passive phenomenon, at least from the time of Ibn Sīnā (lat. Avicenna, d. 1037) onward. Building o

Investigating organizational resilience in a medicine and health sciences university in United Arab Emirates.

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 pandemic emerged in late 2019, leading to global disruption and forcing people to adapt to a new reality. The intensity of the pandemic affected many organisations' preparedness, response, and recovery efforts, causing numerous businesses to struggle. Although no single theory fully explains why some businesses thrived during this time, the concept of organisational resilience stands out. Organisations with a resilient culture seemed better equipped to address risks, adapt effectively, and seize opportunities for innovation. Therefore, the purpose of the current study is

An overview of benign prostatic hyperplasia and its appreciation in Greco-Arab (Unani) system of medicine.

OBJECTIVE: Conventional treatments for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) like 5alpha-reductase inhibitors and invasive surgery are associated with some obvious side effects. Conversely, evidence, though limited, has shown that alternative medicines are safer and have potential to improve the lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and quality of life in addition to improving sexual dysfunction in patients with BPH. The current article aimed to include an overview of BPH, different ways of its management, and particularly its appreciation in Greco-Arab (Unani) system of medicine, one of the altern

A comprehensive perspective of traditional Arabic or Islamic medicinal plants as an adjuvant therapy against COVID-19.

COVID-19 is a pulmonary disease caused by SARS-CoV-2. More than 200 million individuals are infected by this globally. Pyrexia, coughing, shortness of breath, headaches, diarrhoea, sore throats, and body aches are among the typical symptoms of COVID-19. The virus enters into the host body by interacting with the ACE2 receptor. Despite many SARS-CoV-2 vaccines manufactured by distinct strategies but any evidence-based particular medication to combat COVID-19 is not available yet. However, further research is required to determine the safety and effectiveness profile of the present therapeutic a

Arabic Perspectives on Classification of Psychotic Disorders: A Historical Overview and Comparison With Contemporary Classifications.

This paper explores the perspectives of Arabic-scribing medical schools on the classification of psychotic disorders of the Middle Ages, the so-called "Islamic Golden Age". Through an in-depth analysis of seminal texts in Arabic medical literature, including works by renowned scholars such as Tabari, Razi, Avicenna, and others, this paper elucidates the historical development of psychiatric taxonomy in the Arabic medical tradition. By examining the representations of "junun" ("madness") or psychoses in these texts and comparing them with earlier European and current classifications, we aim to
