Anti-inflammatory effects of a traditional Korean medicine: Ojayeonjonghwan.

OBJECTIVE: To study the anti-inflammatory properties of OJ. CONTEXT: Ojayeonjonghwan (OJ) is a traditional Korean prescription, which has been widely used for the treatment of prostatitis. However, no scientific study has been performed of the anti-inflammatory effects of OJ. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Peritoneal macrophages were isolated 3-4 days after injecting a C57BL/6J mouse with thioglycollate. They were then treated with OJ water extract (0.01, 0.1, and 1 mg/mL) for 1 h and stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) for different times. Nitric oxide (NO), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iN

Insects and other arthropods used as drugs in Korean traditional medicine.

Insects and other arthropods appear in pharmacopoeias of Korean traditional medicine, but little was known about their use in modern South Korea. Interviews were conducted with 20 traditional medicine doctors at clinics in South Korea's Kyeong Dong Shijang in Seoul--one of the world's largest traditional drug markets--to learn about current patterns of usage. Seventeen products are prescribed and the use of arthropod drugs is stable or increasing. Centipedes (Scolopendra spp.) used primarily to treat arthritis and the silk moth fungus (Beauveria bassiana, which infects silk moth larvae) used m

Disease-specific differences in the use of traditional Korean medicine in Korea.

BACKGROUND: Though traditional Korean medicine plays an important role in the Korean parallel health care system, there is limited information about the preference and usage of traditional Korean medicine compared to Western medicine because they have different disease classification systems. The aim of this study is to determine the relative preference for traditional Korean medicine using data acquired nationwide. METHODS: Data from the 2008 Korea Health Panel were analyzed to determine the preference of medical services by disease. The use of traditional Korean medicine use is defined by t

Traditional Korean and Western medicine use after industrial accidents: A hurdle model analysis.

BACKGROUND: The number of injured workers using Traditional Korean Medicine (KM) soared from 752 in 2013 to 10,273 in 2023, yet this trend remains underexplored. This cross-sectional study examined the frequency and factors linked to KM and Western Medicine (WM) use among injured workers. METHODS: Data from 6,985 participants in the 2018 and 2023 waves of the Panel Study of Workers' Compensation Insurance (PSWCI) were analyzed. A hurdle model assessed outpatient visits: logistic regression for the probability of use and negative binomial regression for visit intensity. Demographic, socioecono

Utilization of Traditional Korean Medicine Services by the Older Population: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Korean healthcare service is divided into conventional medicine and traditional Korean medicine (TKM). This cross-sectional study compared the older population (65 years and older) with two groups of the general population (19-50 years and 51-64 years) to understand the current patterns in the use of TKM services by the older population. Using data from the 2017 National Survey of TKM Usage, we analyzed the main purpose and diseases or symptoms for TKM use, the reason for choosing TKM over other types of medicine, and the treatments provided. Both age groups sought TKM services to "[treat] a d

[A study on the general public understanding and utilization of Korean traditional medicine in colonial period].

During Colonial Period, Western Medicine was introduced, and due to the lean-to-one-side policy by the Japanese, Western Medicine became the mainstream medical science while Oriental Medicine was pushed to the outskirts. The general public in colonial period got help from medical profession after they tried something they could do at home when they got sick or injured. There were differences to get help from western or traditional medicine according to their economic status, living area, and educational status, the character of disease or injury, etc. In general, public made more use of tradit

A spadework for integrative medicine based critical pathways for facial palsy: Web-based survey from traditional Korean medicine doctors.

Patients affected with facial palsy consult both traditional Korean medicine doctors and conventional medicine doctors. Considering that the optimal approach varies depending on the progress of the disease, there is a need for facial palsy management through integrated medical care. However, no critical pathway has been developed to manage facial palsy from an integrated medical perspective. The aims of this study were to (a) explore treatment utilization status and awareness for facial palsy; (b) understand possible traditional Korean medicine modalities; and (c) suggest interventions to be i

Antitumor activity of Soamsan, a traditional Korean medicine, via suppressing angiogenesis and growth factor transcription.

Antiangiogenic and antitumor activities of Soamsan known as an anticancer remedy in traditional Korean medicine were examined. In contrast to the normal branching of vascular vessels in chorioallantoic membrane (CAM), blood vessels in CAM treated with Soamsan (50 microg per egg) were run parallel to each other with less branching. Oral administration of Soamsan (20 mg/kg per day) for 4 weeks significantly inhibited the rat corneal neovascularization induced by suture, and the length of blood vessels in Soamsan-treated rat cornea was conspicuously low compared to control. Traditional Korean Medicine Treatment for Patients with Wilting Disorder: A Literature Review of In Vivo Studies.

Wilting disorder is an abnormal condition characterized by weakness and paralysis of the upper and lower extremities. Pathogenesis and treatment target of the disorder are unclear; hence, allopathic treatment is generally used to relieve the symptoms. To investigate the treatment mechanism and effect of Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) in patients with wilting disorder, we reviewed in vivo studies that focused on the effect of TKM on the main symptoms of wilting disorder and treatment of the diseases that can cause these symptoms. We electronically searched the PubMed, Cochrane, and CNKI (Chi

Protocol for a Radial Pulse-Based Vascular Age Index Integrated with Traditional Korean Medicine Pulse Diagnosis.

OBJECTIVES: Vascular aging, a central determinant of cardiovascular risk, is commonly assessed by pulse wave velocity (PWV)-based indices such as carotid-femoral PWV (cfPWV). However, these methods are not always feasible in routine or integrative clinical settings, requiring specialized equipment. Radial artery pulse wave analysis has emerged as a non-invasive alternative for estimating vascular age, while traditional Korean medicine (TKM) pulse diagnosis provides a qualitative assessment of vascular and systemic conditions. Despite the conceptual overlap, integration of modern vascular metri

Improvements in Scrotal Thermoregulation in Patients with Varicoceles Treated by Using Traditional Korean Medicine: Two Case Reports.

A varicocele is a dilatation of the pampiniform venous plexus within the spermatic cord. The incidence of varicoceles is 15%, and it occurs in more than 40% of men in infertile couples. Traditional Korean medicine (TKM) has been used to treat male infertility in Korea. We present two cases of men with varicoceles diagnosed via physical examination and scrotal thermography. We treated these men for two months by using TKM techniques, which included acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and herbal medicine. We used scrotal thermography to evaluate the varicoceles before and after TKM treatment. After T
