Medulla oblongata teratomas are rare. The authors report 2 new cases of teratomas that occurred exclusively in the medulla oblongata. The first case was in a 9-year-old boy who presented with a 6-month history of neck pain and repeated paroxysmal vomiting. Based on preoperative radiographic findings, the initial diagnosis was of an intraaxial medulla oblongata hemangioblastoma. Intraoperatively, the cystic component of the tumor was gray, gelatinous, and soft in consistency. The solid component was light pink, rubbery, and nodular in appearance, with an identifiable boundary. The lesion was co

A 4-month-old boy had recurrent attacks of apnea before progressive quadriparesis, ocular motility disturbance, and depressed corneal reflexes led to the discovery of a posterior fossa mass. Death occurred postoperatively during prolonged apnea. Necropsy disclosed an oligodendroglioma of the medulla oblongata. A review of this rare neoplasm in the neonatal period is given.

Respiratory regulation is considered as a feedback mechanism serving the homeostasis of the hydrogen ion concentration in brain extracellular fluid during rest as well as during exercise. Only in hypoxia the working range of the regulator is shifted in such a way that a sufficient O2 partial pressure is maintained at the cost of hydrogen ion concentration. The main sensing element of the regulator is the central' chemosensitivity. The location of the chemosensitive mechanism in two plaques of a superficial layer of the ventral medulla oblongata is amply discussed. This region is separated fro

Isolated brainstem abscess, specifically, medullary abscess, is rare and often fatal. Diagnosis requires appropriate imaging and a high degree of clinical suspicion. Good outcomes are possible. A 69-year-old woman presented with an isolated medulla oblongata abscess that manifested as a syndrome of rapidly progressive multiple cranial nerve palsies and decreased level of consciousness. Microneurosurgical incision and drainage of the medullary abscess were performed. Maximal therapy of antibiotics, intensive care management, and extended rehabilitation was delivered. A prompt diagnosis of medul

Intracranial lipoma in the medulla oblongata has been rarely reported. Only two cases have been documented in the literature. This report concerns a patient who complained of nuchal soreness and an unstable gait for 6 months. An olivelike lipoma, arising from the posterior aspect of the medulla oblongata and embedded in the lower cranial nerves, was found at suboccipital craniectomy and posterior laminectomy of C1-2. Partial removal of the lipoma was performed for decompression; radical removal would have been hazardous. The clinical symptoms subsided postoperatively. The computed tomography s

A case of cavernous angioma of the medulla oblongata with clinical manifestations developing during the course of upper respiratory tract infection in a boy aged 16 years is described. In the first stage of the disease there were bulbar signs of gradually increasing intensity without changes in CSF. In the third week fatal haemorrhage to the medulla oblongata perforating into the cerebral ventricles and subarachnoid space occurred.

Intracranial germinomas mostly occur in teenagers and young adults. The common sites are pineal and suprasellar regions. Males with Klinefelter syndrome, compared with males without chromosomal abnormalities, are known to have a higher incidence of developing pineal or suprasellar germinomas. As for germinoma in the medulla oblongata, this is rare, with only 21 previous cases reported. Due to the rarities, any relationship between people with Klinefelter syndrome and medulla oblongata germinomas remains undetermined. We present a rare case of medulla oblongata germinoma in a 25-year-old man. I

Cystic hemangioblastoma of the brain stem is an extremely rare clinical entity. Only eight cases have been reported in the literature. This is a report of a case of successful extirpation of a cystic hemangioblastoma of the medulla oblongata. A 47-year-old man was admitted to our clinic with the complaint of progressive numbness on his left upper limb since January 1995. Neurological examination revealed numbness and decreased vibration sensation on his left upper limb. MRI showed a cystic 1.5 x 2.0 cm lesion on the medulla oblongata, and with administration of Gd-DTPA, a small mass lesion on

A 32-year-old female presented with medulla oblongata germinoma manifesting as numbness in the extremities. Computed tomography demonstrated a mass in the medulla oblongata expanding into the fourth ventricle. The tumor was partially removed. Immunohistochemical staining of the tumor specimen demonstrated large epithelioid cells positive for placental alkaline phosphatase, and syncytiotrophoblastic cells positive for beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin. Some epithelioid cells were also positive for cytokeratin. She received 44 Gy of irradiation to the posterior fossa and 20 Gy whole s

The angioarchitectonic regions in the medulla oblongata and the midbrain of 14 grown-up guinea pigs are discribed. According to direction and number of the supplying arteries, three sections are distinguished. The medial part is supplied worst. It contains the medial row of the nuclei of the cranial nerves. The more lateral parts have always double or treble supplies. They are distinguished by a high capillary density. Those parts are associated with the medullar nuclei of the cranial nerves.

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system tuberculosis remains a prevalent problem in developing countries. Also, this disease has been an important problem in developed countries due to the increased incidence of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Tuberculosis of the central nervous system is seen in 10% of immunocompetent patients with primary tuberculosis.
CASE REPORT: We report two patients with tuberculoma in the central nervous system. The first case had a lesion located in the medulla oblongata, and the second case had a lesion in the medulla spinalis between the 5th cervical and 1st thoraci

A case of a delayed lesion of the medulla oblongata caused by migration of an acupuncture needle is presented. The patient was a 60-year-old woman who had undergone embedded-type acupuncture needle treatment around 1975. In 1993 she was admitted to our hospital with a 3-week history of progressive motor and sensory disturbance of her right upper extremity. CT demonstrated that one needle had penetrated the medulla oblongata transversely at the level of the foramen magnum. The needle was removed surgically without any complications. This is the first report of an acupuncture needle migrating in

A case of a newborn infant with a complex cerebral malformation, including a neurenteric cyst of medulla oblongata is presented. This localization is extremely rare, only one such case has been reported in the world literature. Other cerebral malformations were spina bifida posterior with cervico-dorsal dysraphia, cerebellar hypoplasy, cervico-dorsal cystic meningocele and hydrocephalus. The etiology of this complex malformation remained unknown.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the correlation of lesions of the brain as visualized in cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the ability of spontaneous respiration.
METHODS: In a prospective concept, cranial MRI after traumatic brain injury or spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage was performed in 250 subjects at an early stage. All MRI findings were correlated with respiratory conditions on the day of examination. Sedation was performed only to facilitate toleration of the artificial ventilation, as and when necessary. Spontaneous respiration could hence be registered clinically.

Hemangioblastoma is a rare tumor of vascular origin, most commonly located in the posterior fossa, which presents with severe symptoms and usually very hard to resect without remarkable operative blood loss.1-2 Pre-operative embolization may decrease the amount of intra-operative bleeding, but the endovascular treatment of such tumor may be very challenging due to the high risk of infarction of the surrounding tissues. Direct puncture embolization has been developed to overcome many of the limitations of endovascular techniques for many hypervascular lesions, also hemangioblastomas.3-5 We pres

BACKGROUND: Glioependymal cysts (GECs) are rare benign lesions that can be found anywhere along the neuroaxis, with most of the reports denoting supratentorial location. Here, we introduce a rare case of successfully treated glioependymal cysts lying in an uncommon location, namely medulla oblongata.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 69-year-old lady presented with progressive unsteadiness and swallowing disturbances, and brain magnetic resonance imaging showed a dorsally located lesion within the medulla oblongata; based on the presentation and radiological features, surgical intervention was deemed manda

Giant cell glioblastoma is a rare variant within the spectrum of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) tumors. A giant cell glioblastoma may be associated with a better prognosis than the common type of GBM after combined treatment involving tumor resection and radiochemotherapy. A giant cell glioblastoma may occur at various sites in the brain and spinal cord. To the authors' knowledge, this type of tumor has not been previously reported as arising as an exophytic tumor from the medulla oblongata. The authors report on a 40-year-old man who presented with a large tumor located in the caudal fourth ve

Distribution and maturation of catecholaminergic (CA) neurons have been studied by tyrosine hydroxylase immunohistochemistry in the medulla oblongata of human fetuses aged 14.5-25 weeks of gestation. Already at 14.5 weeks, CA neurons were observed in two longitudinally oriented cell clusters, one located ventrolaterally in the area of the lateral reticular and ambiguous nuclei, the other one dorsomedially forming 4 groups related to the dorsal vagal nucleus, the commissural nucleus of the vagus, the nucleus of the tractus solitarius and the area postrema. CA neurons in the area postrema were o
