An animal model of malignant melanoma of the eye was established by transplanting a cell suspension from cutaneous melanomas into the anterior chamber of the eye in Sinclair Farm miniature swine. The authors present results of experimental studies on the usefulness of hematoporphyrin and laser in diagnosis and treatment of intraocular tumors. An amelanotic Greene melanoma was implanted into anterior chamber of 10 rabbits. After administration of HpD the tumor was irradiated with laser light of wavelengths 406 nm for diagnosis and 630 nm for selective destruction of neoplastic cells. During follow-up the tumor was growing pale and its gradual shrinkage was observed. In histopathological examination multiple area of necrosis with total destruction of blood vessels were found.

The presented results show the effect of targeting of collagen receptor, alpha1beta1 integrin expressed on the endothelial cells on the development of experimental melanoma and pathological angiogenesis. Pathobiologic characteristics of cerebral and cutaneous melanoma may cause an increase in mortality resulting from brain metastases in advanced melanoma patients, in addition to anatomic lesions and biological effects caused by the tumor location. We established intracranial and subcutaneous melanoma models using cultured malignant cells derived from amelanotic melanoma.
