As husbandry practices have improved, safe and effective contraception for captive wildlife management has become a necessity. Melengestrol acetate (MGA), a synthetic progestin, is highly effective and has been used in many zoo species. Long-term use of MGA has been associated with uterine lesions in zoo felids, but effects in zoo canids have not been evaluated. We investigated the use of an orally active progestin (melengestrol acetate; MGA) to suppress reproductive activity in yearling beef bulls. Immunosuppressive effects of newly developed synthetic progestins, melengestrol acetate (MGA), and three pyrimidine analogs, ara-cytidine (Ara-C), Ara-C 5'-benzoate and octanoate, were investigated on the heart allograft survival in the rat. This study examines the effect of melengestrol acetate (MGA) implants on reproductive function and various biochemical parameters, ovarian activity, and uterine morphology in ten female common marmosets implanted for either 6-8 or 19-21 months. Three studies were designed using a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments within each experiment to evaluate the effects of various management techniques on growth and carcass traits of once-calved heifers. In Exp. 1, 33 yearling (16 control [C] and 17 prenatally androgenized [PA]) and 39 once-calved (20 C and 19 PA) nonpregnant heifers were used to evaluate the effects of age and PA. Once-calved heifers were approximately 31 kg heavier (P < .03) on-test, initially consumed 11% more (P < .01) DM, and gained 11% faster (P < .08), but had similar (P = .44) gain to feed ratios (.138 vs. .131)
