Oral inflammatory diseases such as oral lichen planus are characterized by dysregulated chemokine production and persistent interferon-associated signaling, with JAK/STAT pathways playing a central role in epithelial-immune crosstalk. Here, we investigated whether Melissa officinalis extract (MOE), a widely used phytomedicine with incompletely defined mechanisms, modulates inflammatory signaling in oral epithelial cells. MOE composition was characterized by HPLC-HRMS, and transcriptomic, RT-qPCR, ELISA, immunofluorescence, and cell-free kinase analyses were employed to define its biological ef

Melissa officinalis (lemon balm) has a long history of being used in traditional medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal tract disorders in human thanks to its spasmolytic and stress reducing effects. These pharmacological properties have been confirmed in laboratory animals. Unfortunately, in the case of veterinary medicine, the effect of lemon balm on gut contractility has been never subjected to a detailed investigation. On the other hand, there is urgent need of new drugs that could be safely used in animals for both, causative and symptomatic treatment. In broiler chicken, one of t

BACKGROUND: Extracts and essential oils of medicinal plants are increasingly of interest as novel drugs for antiherpetic agents, since the herpes simplex virus (HSV) might develop resistance to commonly used antiviral drugs.
METHODS: An aqueous extract of Melissa officinalis as well as phenolic extract compounds, i.e. caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid and rosmarinic acid were examined for their antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) in vitro.
RESULTS: When drugs were added to HSV-1-infected cells, no antiviral effect was observed as determined by plaque reduction assay an

Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica on October 28, 2025, devastating the health care infrastructure and causing a surge of traumatic spinal injuries referred to the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI). Although UHWI neurosurgeons possessed the expertise to manage these cases, a shortage of spinal implant systems threatened the delivery of definitive care. This mismatch between clinical capability and material resources reflects a fundamental yet overlooked barrier in global neurosurgery. We describe a real-time, multi-institutional response involving neurosurgical leaders in Jamaica and

Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated systemic disorder that extends beyond the skin and may adversely affect cardiovascular function. Herbal therapies have emerged as promising complementary approaches for mitigating psoriasis-associated cardiac complications. The present study aimed to evaluate the cardioprotective potential of Melissa officinalis (MO) extract in psoriasis. Twenty-four male Wistar albino rats were randomly assigned to four experimental groups: control, MO, psoriasis (PSORI), and PSORI+MO. After induction, animals received MO extract (200 mg/kg b.w.) orally for three weeks.

Neuroinflammation and microglial activation play critical roles in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Modulating microglial activation may help prevent the progression of these disorders. This study aimed to investigate the effects and mechanisms of Melissa officinalis ethanol extract on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced microglial activation in BV2 cells. Cell viability and nitric oxide (NO) production were assessed using MTT assay and Griess reagent, while inflammatory cytokine levels were measured by qPCR. Key inflammatory pathways, including MAPK, TLR4,

Candida spp. are the most prevalent fungi of the human microbiota and are opportunistic pathogens that can cause oral candidiasis. Management of such infections is limited due to the low number of antifungal drugs available, their relatively high toxicity and the emergence of antifungal resistance. Therefore, much interest in the antimicrobial potential of natural compounds has recently been evident. The use of hydrogels in the delivery of biocides has been explored due to their biocompatibility, ease with drug encapsulation, and due to their potential to confer mechanical and structural prope

Despite its proven efficacy in cancer treatment, doxorubicin's therapeutic potential is limited by cumulative, dose-dependent cardiotoxicity, primarily associated with oxidative stress. Given the well-documented antioxidant properties of Melissa officinalis L., this study aimed to assess the cardioprotective potential of its ethanolic extract (MOE) against doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity (DIC). Twenty-one female Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into three groups: CTRL (healthy, untreated), DOX (doxorubicin-treated), and DOX-MO (treated with both doxorubicin and MOE). Doxorubicin (15
