Is working memory a gateway to long-term memory?

Working memory (WM) has been proposed to act as a gateway into long-term memory (LTM), such that only information successfully stored in WM can be transferred into LTM. Accordingly, the capacity limit of WM should constrain the acquisition of LTM traces. Evidence for that prediction is mixed: Some studies showed that increasing WM load translated into weaker LTM of the memorized information. Others found no effect of WM load on LTM learning. Here we present the results of three experiments that comprehensively test the gateway hypothesis. All experiments included a WM test and a delayed LTM te

The hippocampus and long-term memory.

This special issue of Cognitive Neuroscience focuses on the roles of the hippocampus during long-term memory. A discussion paper by Tallman, Clark, and Smith (this issue) found that functional connectivity of the hippocampus with the parahippocampal cortex and fusiform gyrus decreased with memory age, providing support for systems consolidation. Commentaries were received by Berdugo-Vega and Gräff (this issue), Feld and Gerchen (this issue), Gellersen and Simons (this issue), Gobbo, Mitchell-Heggs, and Tse (this issue), Gilmore, Audrain, and Martin (this issue), Kirwan (this issue), Manns (thi

Angiotensin modulates long-term memory expression but not long-term memory storage in the crab Chasmagnathus.

Memory reconsolidation is a dynamic process in which a previously consolidated memory becomes labile following reactivation by a reminder. In a previous study in the crab Chasmagnathus memory model, we showed that a water-shortage episode, via angiotensin modulation during reconsolidation, could reveal a memory that otherwise remains unexpressed: weakly trained animals cannot reveal long-term memory (LTM) except when an episode of noticeable ethological meaning, water deprivation, is contingent upon reconsolidation. However, these results are at variance with two of our previous interpretation

Assessing the involvement of long-term memory in working memory.

Complex span tasks are working memory (WM) tasks in which participants maintain series of items (e.g., letters) for further serial recall while performing a concurrent task (e.g., parity judgement on digits). It has been shown that even pushing the demand of this concurrent task at its individual limits strongly reduces, but does not totally abolish, memory performance. A small memory residual of about one item remains. The present study aimed at testing the hypothesis that this residual is retrieved from long-term memory (LTM). For this purpose, two experiments compared the size of memory res

Developmental dyslexia and explicit long-term memory.

The reduced verbal long-term memory capacities often reported in dyslexics are generally interpreted as a consequence of their deficit in phonological coding. The present study was aimed at evaluating whether the learning deficit exhibited by dyslexics was restricted only to the verbal component of the long-term memory abilities or also involved visual-object and visual-spatial domain. A further goal of the present study was to investigate the predictive value of non-verbal long-term memory abilities with respect to word and non-word reading in dyslexic children. In accordance with these aims, p

Long-term memory monitoring in infant tachycardias.

Evaluation and detection of pathological tachycardias in infants sometimes is difficult. Noninvasive recording of the infant's ECG at the time of symptoms forms the mainstay of diagnosis, although invasive electrophysiological testing may be required. Accurate rhythm diagnosis is central to successful treatment. The advent of high capacity ambulatory memory monitoring makes it possible to record ECG signals, as well as apnea data. We present two cases of infant tachycardia studied by memory monitor. These devices yield good quality ECG signals and may provide information regarding a particular

Long-term abstinent alcoholics have normal memory.

It is generally believed that many non-Korsakoff alcoholics have subtle defects in memory. To determine whether such defects vary as a function of length of abstinence (LOA), we performed extensive memory testing with: (1) recently detoxified (n = 31; LOA-29 days); (2) intermediate-term abstinent (n = 28; LOA = 1.9 years); (3) long-term abstinent (n = 32; LOA-7.0 years) alcoholics; and (4) nonalcoholic controls (n = 37). All subjects were matched on age and education. Alcoholics were matched on years of alcoholic drinking. Memory measures were divided into the following domains: verbal learnin

Does Attending to Information in Working Memory Improve Long-Term Memory?

There is broad agreement among memory researchers that WM processes can influence LTM formation. Prior research has suggested that holding information in WM for a longer time may benefit LTM because of mechanisms such as refreshing, elaboration, or consolidation - processes presumed to rely on focused attention. However, studies manipulating free time do not isolate attention effects from other factors. Several studies have used a more direct way to study the effect of attention on LTM performance by using prioritization techniques (such as retro-cuing and rewarding) whereby attention is direc

Neural bases of orthographic long-term memory and working memory in dysgraphia.

Spelling a word involves the retrieval of information about the word's letters and their order from long-term memory as well as the maintenance and processing of this information by working memory in preparation for serial production by the motor system. While it is known that brain lesions may selectively affect orthographic long-term memory and working memory processes, relatively little is known about the neurotopographic distribution of the substrates that support these cognitive processes, or the lesions that give rise to the distinct forms of dysgraphia that affect these cognitive proces

Long-term representational costs of overloading working memory.

Can learning too much information at once impair long-term retention of its meaning? Emerging evidence suggests that encoding too many items into working memory (WM) limits subsequent long-term memory (LTM) retrieval of their details and gist. These findings highlight a boundary condition for theories positing relatively automatic gist encoding. But how expansive is this boundary? Experiment 1 shows that it extends to older adults, despite their generally enhanced reliance on gist memory. In two older adult samples (n = 40 each), LTM gist retrieval was reduced for objects encoded in sets excee

Enhanced declarative memory in long-term mindfulness practitioners.

OBJECTIVES: Mindfulness meditation (MM) practice is considered to benefit physical and mental health. In particular, several studies have shown a beneficial effect of MM practice on memory performance. However, it is still not clear how long-term training affects long-term declarative memory. In this study we aimed to examine whether long-term MM training impacts declarative memory formation for diverse memoranda types, as well as the role of trait mindfulness, and the possible mediating role of anxiety. METHODS: We examined long-term memory performance in 23 experienced MM practitioners and

Rescue of long-term memory after reconsolidation blockade.

Memory reconsolidation is considered to be the process whereby stored memories become labile on recall, allowing updating. Blocking the restabilization of a memory during reconsolidation is held to result in a permanent amnesia. The targeted knockdown of either Zif268 or Arc levels in the brain, and inhibition of protein synthesis, after a brief recall results in a non-recoverable retrograde amnesia, known as reconsolidation blockade. These experimental manipulations are seen as key proof for the existence of reconsolidation. However, here we demonstrate that despite disrupting the molecular c

Enhanced long-term memory encoding after parietal neurostimulation.

Neurostimulation, e.g., transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), shows promise as an effective cognitive intervention. In spite of low spatial resolution, limited penetration, and temporary influence, evidence highlights tDCS-linked cognitive benefits in a range of cognitive domains. The left posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is an accessible node in frontoparietal networks engaged during long-term memory (LTM). Here, we tested the hypothesis that tDCS can facilitate LTM by pairing LTM encoding and retrieval with PPC stimulation. Healthy young adults performed a verbal LTM task (Californi

Prospective memory impairment in long-term opiate users.

RATIONALE: Opiate use is associated with a range of neurological and cognitive deficits. However, to date, no studies have assessed whether these cognitive deficits extend to the ability to perform intended actions in the future (i.e. prospective memory). Reduced ability in this area might be anticipated due to impaired executive functions and episodic memory associated with long-term opiate use. OBJECTIVES: The main objectives of this study are to assess the performance of long-term opiate users on a laboratory measure of prospective memory which closely simulates the types of prospective me

Consolidation of long-term memory: evidence and alternatives.

Memory loss in retrograde amnesia has long been held to be larger for recent periods than for remote periods, a pattern usually referred to as the Ribot gradient. One explanation for this gradient is consolidation of long-term memories. Several computational models of such a process have shown how consolidation can explain characteristics of amnesia, but they have not elucidated how consolidation must be envisaged. Here findings are reviewed that shed light on how consolidation may be implemented in the brain. Moreover, consolidation is contrasted with alternative theories of the Ribot gradien

Studies of retrograde memory: a long-term view.

Studies of retrograde amnesia are reviewed. First, the issues of temporal gradients of retrograde amnesia are discussed. Second, the question of the anatomical substrates of this syndrome are considered. Finally, some evidence for fractionation of different classes of memoranda within the retrograde time period are presented.

Pentylenetetrazole kindling impairs long-term memory in rats.

The effect of pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) kindling on learning and retention in active (shuttle-box) and passive (step-down) avoidance was studied in rats. PTZ kindling did not impair learning and significantly disturbed long-term memory estimated from retention tests, i.e. PTZ kindling induced a retrograde amnesia in the active and passive avoidance situations. The present results support the view that memory deficit is an integral part of epilepsy.

Long-term memory speeds encoding, independently of attention.

Recent studies suggest that familiar objects benefit from faster working memory (WM) encoding - the transformation of fragile perceptual representations into durable WM representations. This observation led contemporary WM models to postulate a long-term memory (LTM) "template-matching" mechanism, which speeds standard encoding processes. However, faster encoding may also be caused by higher attentional priority for familiar objects. In the current study, we examined whether LTM template matching can be dissociated from selective attention. We used a Rapid Serial Visual Presentation task and a

Notch is required for long-term memory in Drosophila.

A role for Notch in the elaboration of existing neural processes is emerging that is distinct from the increasingly well understood function of this gene in binary cell-fate decisions. Several research groups, by using a variety of organisms, have shown that Notch is important in the development of neural ultrastructure. Simultaneously, Presenilin (Psn) was identified both as a key mediator of Notch signaling and as a site of genetic lesions that cause early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Here we demonstrate that Notch loss of function produces memory deficits in Drosophila melanogaster. The effec
