Disorders of memory.

This paper reviews disorders of memory. After a brief survey of the clinical varieties of the amnesic syndrome, transient and persistent, selected theoretical issues will be considered by posing a series of questions. (i) What is impaired and what is spared in anterograde amnesia? (ii) Do temporal lobe, diencephalic and frontal lobe amnesias differ? (iii) How independently semantic is semantic memory? (iv) What determines the pattern and extent of retrograde memory loss? (v) Can retrograde amnesia ever be "isolated"? (vi) Does psychogenic amnesia involve the same mechanisms as organic amnesia?

[Memory disorders in schizophrenia].

The current interest in memory disorders in schizophrenia results from the way perceptions of schizophrenia--whose organic origin is becoming increasingly evident--and memory--according to which there exist not one, but several memories--have developed. Memory disorders in the schizophrenic cannot be considered in isolation from knowledge accumulated in other areas of the cognitive and neuro-sciences; a more detailed understanding of these disorders requires a comparison of the different cognitive approaches, both with each other and with the neurobiological and clinical approaches, so that th

[Autobiographical memory in depressive disorders].

Contemporary research studies regarding autobiographical memory (AM) indicate that its deficits have a significant impact on the development of mental disorders. We find particularly many reports regarding the comorbidity of AM deficits and depressive disorders. The characteristic feature of AM in the people suffering from depressive disorders is the presence of overgeneral autobiographical memory (OGM), i.e. the reminiscences which contain a summary of many emotion-laden situations, yet without significant detail. This type of reminiscences is observed in the patients with depressive disorder

Temporomandibular disorders and declarative memory.

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a somatic manifestation of stress. Previous researches suggested hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis hyperactivity in TMD, through which TMD patients exhibited abnormalities of the stress response hormone - causing additional cortisol release. Increased cortisol, the principal circulating glucocorticoid in humans, would impair memory retrieval of declarative material. This effect on memory retrieval may in particular be due to glucocorticoid receptors (GR) in the hippocampus. The hypothesis we proposed is that TMD might result in declarative memory imp

[Memory disorders in Parkinson's disease].

52 patients with Parkinson's diseases (PD), 11 patients with suspected Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 20 healthy individuals were observed. The age of the examined persons was 55-74 years. Both quantitative evaluation of the neurologic symptoms and estimation of high psychic functions were performed by means of A.R.Luria's method. Memory tests were also used. It was found that PD was practically always accompanied by memory impairments which were out of the normal age limits. The main mechanism of memory impairment in PD without dementia included insufficiency of independent organization of the

[Memory disorders in chickenpox encephalitis].

A 31-year old man with chicken-pox encephalitis presented with a cerebellar syndrome and disorders of memory. The latter consisted of severe anterograde amnesia with normal retrograde memory, without confabulation or anosognosia. This suggested that the hippocampus was involved, probably functionally, since the outcome was rapidly favourable and the MRI was normal.

Memory consolidation in sleep disorders.

In recent years sleep-related memory consolidation has become a central topic in the sleep research field. Several studies have shown that in healthy individuals sleep promotes memory consolidation. Notwithstanding this, the consequences of sleep disorders on offline memory consolidation remain poorly investigated. Research studies indicate that patients with insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, and narcolepsy often exhibit sleep-related impairment in the consolidation of declarative and procedural information. On the other hand, patients with parasomnias, such as sleep-walking, night terrors an

Explicit memory in anxiety disorders.

Two experiments were conducted to study selective memory bias favoring anxiety-relevant materials in patients with anxiety disorders. In the 1st experiment, 32 patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), 30 with social phobia (speaking anxiety), and 31 control participants incidentally learned GAD-relevant words, speech anxiety-relevant words, strongly pleasant words, and words with a neutral valence. Participants did not show any explicit memory bias for threatening materials. Thirty patients suffering from panic disorder (PD) with agoraphobia and 30 controls took part in the 2nd experi

Longitudinal diagnosis of memory disorders.

Early referral for specialist assessment is becoming more common with memory disorders and dementia: the mean Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score of new patients at our clinic rose from 18.7 to 20.7 between 1986 and 1990. The clinical diagnosis of mild to moderate dementia has been recognized to be difficult, but several studies have reported cross-sectional diagnosis. We examined the number of visits required to establish a clinical diagnosis of dementia in the first 125 patients attending a Memory Disorders Clinic who had at least two visits (six months apart) and the stability of the

Memory and memory confidence in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Pathological doubt, often found in individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), has been theoretically linked to memory deficits, but empirical evidence for such deficits has been mixed. In contrast, many studies suggest that individuals with OCD have low confidence in their memories. The present study aimed to build upon previous research by measuring memory accuracy and confidence in OCD using ecologically valid, idiographically-selected stimuli. Individuals with OCD (OCs), anxious controls (ACs), and nonanxious controls (NACs) were exposed to a set of objects that the OCs had ident

Astrocytes and Memory: Implications for the Treatment of Memory-related Disorders.

Memory refers to the imprint accumulated in the brain by life experiences and represents the basis for humans to engage in advanced psychological activities such as thinking and imagination. Previously, research activities focused on memory have always targeted neurons. However, in addition to neurons, astrocytes are also involved in the encoding, consolidation, and extinction of memory. In particular, astrocytes are known to affect the recruitment and function of neurons at the level of local synapses and brain networks. Moreover, the involvement of astrocytes in memory and memory-related dis

[Management of memory disorders in anxious patients consulting a memory clinic].

The proportion of patients consulting pluridisciplinary memory clinics who present anxiety disorders varies with recruitment and referral practices but often exceeded 10p.100. Most of these subjects have an anxiety trait or stress-related generalized anxiety, often triggered by diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease in a close friend or relation. The consultant should play special attention to analyzing the complaint in order to disclose difficulties in attention, true "loss of memory" events, and any recent traumatic events. The psychometric examination is generally normal or evidences discrete fro

Memory disorders following focal neocortical damage.

Two aspects of memory defects following circumscribed neocortical lesionare considered. First, the selective impairment involving one category of stimuli (e.g. faces, colours) or a specific mnestic ability (spatial orientation). The deficit affects "new" as well as "old" memories and suggests that engrams are located in discrete cortical areas. The second issue concerns the relation of the hemispheric side of lesion to memory of non-verbal visual material, as a function of the differential utilization of the visual and verbal code in carrying out the task. Short-term memory tests are performed

Memory in Psychiatric Disorders: A Review.

Memory constitutes a fundamental cognitive domain, and converging evidence suggests that its dysfunction represents a prominent, though not exclusive, transdiagnostic dimension across major psychiatric disorders. This review aimed to integrate neurobiological, cognitive, and clinical evidence on domain-specific memory impairments in mood, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, post-traumatic stress, and psychotic disorders. A comprehensive search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science up to November 2025 for peer-reviewed studies examining short-term, working, long-term, episodic, semanti

Signal transduction mechanisms in memory disorders.

This chapter explores some of the molecular events contributing to memory formation and how, when these events malfunction, disturbances in memory occur. After a brief discussion of signaling in the hippocampus, we will explore the topics of human mental retardation syndromes that involve disruption of these processes, including Angelman syndrome (AS), Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1)-associated learning disorders, Coffin-Lowry syndrome (CLS), Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RTS), and Rett syndrome (RTT).

11: disorders of memory and intellect.

The clinical approach to the patient with a suspected disorder of memory and intellect is to establish whether it is dementia, which parts of the brain are affected, what is the cause, what is the prognosis, and what can be done about it. The diagnosis of dementia usually requires the involvement of memory and at least one other cognitive system. Delirium and depression are important differential diagnoses. Patients with dementia should usually have some simple investigations after a careful history-taking and examination to identify "reversible" causes. The commonest cause of dementia is Alzh

The financial consequences of undiagnosed memory disorders.

We examine the effect of undiagnosed memory disorders on credit outcomes using individually-matched nationally representative credit reporting and Medicare data. We find effects of early stage disease, years before diagnosis, on a wide range of financial outcomes, including credit card account payment delinquency and amount of delinquent balance, credit utilization among credit card account holders, mortgage delinquency and delinquent balance amount, and credit scores. Effects are pervasive, affecting seniors in single and coupled households, racial/ethnic minorities and non-minorities, and ol

MicroRNAs underlying memory deficits in neurodegenerative disorders.

Neurodegenerative disorders are defined by neuronal loss and often associated with dementia. Understanding the multifactorial nature of cognitive decline is of particular interest. Cell loss is certainly a possibility but also an early imbalance in the complex gene networks involved in learning and memory. The small (~22nt) non-coding microRNAs play a major role in gene expression regulation and have been linked to neuronal survival and cognition. Interestingly, changes in microRNA signatures are associated with neurodegenerative disorders. In this review, we explore the role of three microRNA
