Comprehensive anatomical study of meningeal arteries in dromedaries.

This study provides a detailed, in-depth analysis of the anatomy, topography, and branching patterns of the meningeal arteries in dromedary camels, a subject that has not previously been thoroughly studied in animals, providing insight into the intricate biological adaptations that allow them to survive in harsh environments. By precisely examining 20 heads obtained from freshly slaughtered dromedaries, we revealed the origins and topologies of the rostral, middle, and caudal meningeal arteries using advanced casting techniques for precise rendering. Our findings indicate that the rostral meni

Contribution of meningeal arteries to cerebral arteriovenous malformations.

We studied 52 patients with cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) by selective angiography and found that half received supply from meningeal branches of the external carotid artery. The frequency of meningeal arterial contribution was significantly higher in superficial AVMs, especially in the temporal, parietal and occipital regions. Larger lesions and higher shunt with steal phenomena on angiography were other factors favouring a meningeal arterial contribution. Diffuse AVMs with pial arterial networks around the nidus commonly received meningeal blood supply. In the past, meningeal f

Aneurysms of the meningeal arteries: systematic review and illustrative case series.

Meningeal artery aneurysms are a rare but clinically significant pathology, distinct from cerebral aneurysms and classified as traumatic (trAA) or non-traumatic (non-trAA). Their natural history, optimal diagnosis, and management remain poorly defined. A PRISMA-guided systematic review was conducted (PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science) up to July 2025. We analyzed all reported cases of meningeal artery aneurysms to develop a novel pathophysiology-based classification and evaluate treatment outcomes. A supplementary institutional series of nine combat-related trAA cases is presented. Among

Intimal thickening of meningeal arteries after serial corticectomies for Rasmussen encephalitis.

Rasmussen encephalitis is a rare cause of intractable epilepsy in children. Between 2008 and 2010, 4 patients had second cortical resections performed after a primary corticectomy for Rasmussen encephalitis. In each case, we observed some degree of vessel wall change in leptomeningeal arteries, consisting of moderate to moderately severe intimal hyperplasia. The intervals between original resection and second operation ranged from 8 months to 10 years. Ages of the patients ranged from 9 to 12 years at their first resection and from 10 to 19 years at the time of revision. Four other Rasmussen e

A histological, ultrastructural and immunohistochemical study of superficial temporal arteries and middle meningeal arteries in moyamoya disease.

Pathologic changes in superficial temporal arteries (STA) and middle meningeal arteries (MMA) biopsied from 15 patients with moyamoya disease (MD) who had undergone cerebro-temporal arterio-synangiosis were studied histologically, ultrastructurally and immunohistochemically. The main pathologic features were: proliferation of smooth muscle cells (SMCs) and thickening of the intima, degeneration and destruction of SMCs in the media and intima, and the presence of condensed organelles in necrosed SMCs or the interstitium among SMCs, or both outside and within the elastica interna (EI). The EI ha

Risks of presurgical embolization of feeding arteries in 137 intracranial meningeal tumors.

BACKGROUND: Embolization of extra-axial tumors has shown its effectiveness in reducing perisurgical blood loss. However, the complication rate of this procedure is poorly reported. We aimed to evaluate the rate of procedure-related complications and their risk factors. METHODS: From 1998 to 2011, 193 consecutive patients (141 females, 52 males; mean age = 52.9 years) were referred to our institution for presurgical embolization of an extra-axial tumor (meningiomas: n = 178; solitary fibrous tumors: n = 3; other: n = 12). Of 193 patients, 137 (71 %) underwent 141 embolizations (by microparticl

Sex differences in CGRP-induced vasodilation of human middle meningeal arteries but not human coronary arteries: implications for migraine.

BACKGROUND: Migraine prevalence and levels of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), a peptide involved in migraine pathophysiology, differ between men and women, and appear to be affected by changes in sex hormones. The present study investigated the sex-specific responses to CGRP in human isolated arteries. METHODS: CGRP-induced relaxation of 62 (28 men and 34 women) human isolated middle meningeal arteries (HMMA) and 139 (69 men and 70 women) human isolated coronary arteries (HCA) was compared between men and women in groups <50 years and ≥50 years of age as a proxy for pre- and postmenop

Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) potently dilates middle meningeal arteries: implications for migraine.

Migraine is a debilitating neurological disorder characterized by mild to severe headache that is often accompanied by aura and other neurological symptoms. Among proposed mechanisms, dilation of the dural vasculature especially the middle meningeal artery (MMA) has been implicated as one component underlying this disorder. Several regulatory peptides from trigeminal sensory and sphenopalatine postganglionic parasympathetic fibers innervating these vessels have been implicated in the process including pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP). Although PACAP has been well desc

Type 2 persistent primitive olfactory artery associated with bilateral ophthalmic arteries arising from the middle meningeal arteries diagnosed by magnetic resonance angiography.

Persistent primitive olfactory artery (PPOA) is a relatively rare variation of the proximal anterior cerebral artery (ACA). Traditionally, there are two types: Type 1 is a common type, which generally follows an anteroinferior course and which takes a hairpin turn before continuing to the A2 segment of the ACA. Type 2 is an extremely rare variation that continues to the anterior ethmoidal artery without a hairpin turn. Since Type 2 PPOAs are small in caliber, previously reported cases were found during anatomical dissection or were detected by catheter angiography. We herein report a case of T

Menthol dural application alters meningeal arteries tone and enhances excitability of trigeminocervical neurons in rats.

Headaches, including migraines, can have a causal relationship to exposure to cold, and this relationship may be both positive and negative, as cold can both provoke and alleviate cephalgia. The role of thermoreceptors responsible for transduction of low temperatures belongs to the transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily melastatin member 8 (TRPM8). These channels mediate normal cooling sensation and have a role in both cold pain and cooling-mediated analgesia; they are seen as a potential target for principally new anti-migraine pharmaceuticals. Using a validated animal migraine

Persistent Stapedial Artery Resulting in Direct Communication Between the Middle Meningeal and Basilar Arteries: Clinical Image.

A persistent stapedial artery originates from the petrous segment of the internal carotid artery due to failure of the regression of the embryonic stapedial artery. During embryologic development, the stapedial artery supplies the middle meningeal artery through the ventral pharyngeal artery. The presence of a persistent stapedial artery can result in direct communication between the basilar and middle meningeal arteries. We present a cerebral angiogram image of an adult patient that shows a right-sided persistent stapedial artery with communication between the right middle meningeal and basil

Sacral meningeal arteriovenous fistula fed by branches of the hypogastric arteries and drained through medullary veins.

The authors report a new case of intraspinal extra-medullary meningeal arteriovenous fistula draining through medullary veins. Discovered in a 33-year-old black man suffering from a cauda equina syndrome, this malformation suspected in myelography was confirmed by a selective angiographic procedure of both internal iliac arteries. This investigation specified the sacral site of the fistula as well as its feeding arteries from several branches of the left and right internal iliac arteries and its posterior and intra-meningeal venous medullary drainage. An embolization procedure followed by a su

Bilateral carotid-anterior cerebral artery anastomoses associated with bilateral ophthalmic arteries arising from the middle meningeal arteries diagnosed by magnetic resonance angiography: a case report.

Anastomosis between the ophthalmic segment of the internal carotid artery and the A1-A2 junction of the anterior cerebral artery (ACA), described as carotid-ACA anastomosis or infraoptic course of the ACA, is rare and known to demonstrate right-sided predominance. We report a case of bilateral carotid-ACA anastomoses associated with bilateral ophthalmic arteries arising from the sphenoidal branch of the middle meningeal artery that were diagnosed by magnetic resonance (MR) angiography. Identification of rare arterial variations on MR angiography requires careful scrutiny of source images.

Autoregulation in the middle meningeal artery.

In cats anesthetized with alpha-chloralose, autoregulation of blood flow (F) in the middle meningeal and common carotid arteries was assessed by bleeding and subsequently reinfusing the animals to achieve a 25% step reduction in mean arterial blood pressure (P), while maintaining the systolic blood pressure >80 mmHg. The integrity of autoregulation was assessed by calculating the gain factor Gf = 1 - [(deltaF/F)/(deltaP/P)]. Cats were examined intact, after hexamethonium (10 mg/kg), and after papaverine (6 mg/kg). Reduction of blood pressure of 25 to 60 mmHg produced equivalent drops in caroti

Meningeal management for optimal revascularization from middle meningeal artery.

Numerous surgical techniques have been developed and refined for the treatment of moyamoya disease. Among the indirect techniques of revascularization, encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis has been recognized as effective in promoting revascularization and reversing symptomatology. Neovascularization occurs between the donor artery, either the superficial temporal artery or the occipital artery, and the underlying ischemic cortex. Additionally, the middle meningeal artery and its dural branches have also been shown to contribute to collateral blood supply. In this report the authors describe an int
