OBJECTIVE: the menisci are easily injured and difficult to repair. The aim of this study was to analyze the current state of meniscal surgery aimed at preserving morphology and conserving the biomechanics of the knee to prevent joint degeneration.
METHODOLOGY: a search of the electronic medical literature database Medline was conducted, from http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed. The search was not limited by language. Candidate articles were identified by searching for those that included the keywords meniscus, surgery, suture, implant, allograft. The limits were included for clinical research

BACKGROUND: Meniscal root tears have an estimated prevalence of 60 to 70 persons per 100,000, and they have gained increased interest recently. Meniscal extrusion is defined as an extrusion >3 mm for medial meniscus tears from the tibial articular cartilage. Root tear-associated meniscal extrusion has been associated with degenerative cartilage damage, particularly since it contributes to increased tibiofemoral stresses during axial loading.
INDICATIONS: Medial meniscus extrusion >3 mm in the setting of medial meniscus posterior root horn tears.
TECHNIQUE DESCRIPTION: The medial meniscus is

Discoid meniscus is the most common congenital variant of the meniscus. Its variability in pathology leads to a spectrum of clinical presentations in patients. Treatment must be tailored to the specific pathology of the discoid meniscus. Imaging studies such as radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging can be useful in confirming the diagnosis, but may be the most accurate in determining specific pathology. Thorough intraoperative evaluation of the discoid is critical to appropriate surgical management. Rim preservation and repair is preferred to prevent degenerative changes in the knee.

The discoid meniscus is probably a congenital deviation that usually occurs laterally. The Watanabe classification consists of complete, incomplete, or Wrisburg ligament types. Complete and incomplete discoid menisci normally require treatment only when a tear occurs. The Wrisburg ligament type lacks a posterior capsular attachment. The preferred treatment is repair of the posterior capsular disruption with saucerization of the remaining meniscus.

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association2000eng
Meniscus repair using bioabsorbable devices has become popular in the last few years. Good clinical results have been reported and few complications have been published. This report describes the case of a 37-year-old male patient with a lateral meniscus repair using 4 Meniscus Arrows (Bionx Implants, Blue Bell, PA). Postoperatively, repeated episodes of intra-articular effusions have occurred. A second-look arthroscopy 8 months after the reconstruction showed that the meniscus tear had not healed and revealed the presence of chondral damage corresponding to the location of the arrows in the p

Meniscus-confined electrodeposition (MCED) is an emerging micro-nano-fabrication method. It has attracted much attention due to its low cost, simple process and ability to freely fabricate complex three-dimensional structures with high aspect ratios. However, in the MCED process, the meniscus morphology (confined electrochemical reaction micro-region) is susceptible to the interference of external factors (environmental humidity and variation in the distance between the probe tip and the deposited microstructure), thereby affecting the deposition continuity and stability. To address this chall

PURPOSE: This study was undertaken to diagnose and to document the clinical results and technical aspects of arthroscopic meniscus repair for recurrent subluxation with peripheral tears around the popliteal hiatus of the lateral meniscus.
METHODS: Twenty-three patients (24 knees) with symptomatic recurrent subluxation of the lateral meniscus treated by arthroscopic meniscus repair were included. The inclusion criteria were: (1) patients with knee pain, locking or snapping symptoms despite 3 months of conservative treatment; (2) non-discoid lateral meniscus; (3) stable knee, and (4) tears invo

Meniscal injuries frequently result in progressive degeneration of the knee joint, primarily due to the tissue's limited intrinsic healing capacity. To address this clinical challenge, we developed an anisotropic meniscus scaffold using three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting technology to promote functional regeneration. In this study, the scaffold was fabricated via 3D bioprinting, employing a composite of polyurethane and polycaprolactone polymers, meniscus derived decellularized extracellular matrix bioink, and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs).In vitro, the bioprinted constructs, incorporating tis

The pathologic description of the menisci is facilitated by grouping the various disorders into etiologic groups. These include congenital anomalies, traumatic conditions, inflammatory disorders, metabolic disorders, degenerative conditions, and neoplasms. In clinical practice, traumatic conditions, as exemplified by meniscal tears of the vertical-longitudinal or vertical-transverse type, are the most important pathologic disorders. Healing of meniscal tears occurs only when the tear involves the peripheral vascularized attachment of either the lateral or medial meniscus. Intensive clinical an

PURPOSE: The importance of meniscus integrity in the prevention of early osteoarthritis is well known, and preservation is accepted as the primary goal. The purpose of the ESSKA (European Society for Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy) European consensus on traumatic meniscus tears was to provide recommendations for the treatment of meniscus tears based on both scientific evidence and the clinical experience of knee experts.
METHODS: Three groups of surgeons and scientists elaborated and ratified the so-called formal consensus process to define the recommendations for the manag

Two patients with an ossicle of the meniscus are described. Radiologic differentiation from osteochondral loose body or chondrocalcinosis can be made by its ossified appearance and its location within the meniscus. Correct diagnosis is important so that unnecessary surgery is avoided and a protracted search for a free fragment is not carried out.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Discoid lateral meniscus (DLM) is a well-known meniscus variant, and comprises excess and thickened meniscal tissue, altered collagen ultrastructure, and peripheral instability. This article presents a comprehensive review on current knowledge of DLM, focusing on pathology in parallel with surgical techniques and outcomes.
RECENT FINDINGS: A paradigm shift in surgical management of DLM is taking place as knee surgeons are seeing more patients with long-term sequelae of partial lateral meniscectomy, the standard treatment for DLM for many years. Surgical treatment has evolve

From February 1982 through July 1987, the author studied 87 patients who had a total of 116 meniscus tears, 96 of which were repaired. Seventy patients (79 meniscus repairs) had postoperative followup ranging from 12 months to 5 1/2 years (mean, 39 months). The patients' ages ranged from 14 to 51 years with a mean age of 22. The time from injury to surgery ranged from 1 week to 6 years. Twenty-five percent of the injuries were considered acute, i.e., less than 6 weeks after the injury, and 75% of the injuries were considered chronic. Nineteen patients (27%) had isolated meniscus injuries. All

The menisci play a vital role in maintaining knee function and protecting the chondral surfaces. Acute and chronic tears are common injuries among both young athletes and older patients with early degenerative changes. The progression of physiological derangement and chondral injury after meniscus injury and meniscectomy have prompted interest in expanding meniscus repair techniques. Recent literature encourages an attempt at repair in tear patterns previously declared irreparable if the tissue quality allows. The orthopedic surgeon should understand the multitude of techniques available to th

Meniscal lesion does not mean meniscectomy and this is particularly true for the lateral meniscus. The reputation of mildness of the meniscectomy is usurped. The rate of joint space narrowing after lateral meniscectomy is of 40% at a follow-up of 13 years compared to 28% for the medial meniscus (symposium SFA 1996). Several arguments explain those results: biomechanical: the lateral meniscus contributes to the congruence; particularly the lateral meniscus is the zone where antero-posterior translational during knee flexion is 12 mm. The pejorative effects of lateral meniscectomy have conducted

Surgery on the meniscus of the knee joint is one of the most frequently performed operations. The arthroscopic technique currently represents the general treatment standard and except in a few cases has completely superseded the open approach. Arthroscopy facilitates precise diagnosis and classification of all forms of meniscus lesions. In many cases even today partial resection on irreparably damaged meniscus tissue cannot be avoided. The goal is to preserve as much healthy meniscus tissue as possible. Types of tears amenable to reconstruction always require arthroscopic refixation. Various t
