Outpatient competency restoration programs for adults with serious mental illness.

Due to increasing referrals, long waits for forensic beds, insufficient resources available in hospital- and jail-based settings, and the imperative to deliver competency restoration in the least restrictive setting possible, there is increased need for, and interest in, the creation of more outpatient competency restoration programs (OCRPs) across the United States. Jurisdictions wishing to implement OCRPs require guidance to do so. This scoping review serves as an updated and comprehensive resource to inform these efforts, summarizing academic and gray literature on OCRPs and highlighting ke

The detection of feigned mental disorders on specific competency measures.

Psychologists have standardized competency-to-stand-trial (CST) assessments through the development of specialized CST measures. However, their research has largely neglected the possibility that CST measures may be stymied by feigning mental disorders and concomitant impairment. The current study is the first systematic examination of (a) how feigned mental disorders may affect CST measures and (b) which scales are effective at identifying feigned cases. Bona fide patients (n = 65) were compared with suspected malingerers (n = 22) on 3 CST measures: the Georgia Court Competency Test (GCCT), t

Stereotypes of mental disorders differ in competence and warmth.

Theoretical models of public stigma toward mental illness have focused on factors that perpetuate stigma toward the general label of "mental illness" or toward a handful of specific illnesses, used more or less interchangeably. The current work used the Stereotype Content Model (Fiske, Cuddy, Glick, & Xu, 2002) to examine how one facet of public stigma--stereotype content--differs as a function of specific mental illnesses. Participants were recruited online from across the U.S. Study 1 demonstrated that the overarching category of people with mental illness was perceived as relatively incompe

Preparation for bias, racial-ethnic socialization competency, and Latinx adolescent mental health.

Although parental preparation for bias messages theoretically protect adolescents from the damaging impact of discrimination, they have been linked to mental health challenges in Latinx adolescents. Parental racial-ethnic socialization (RES) competency has been proposed to potentially explain this discrepancy. The present study examined whether RES competency (confidence, skill, stress) moderated the relation between parental preparation for bias and adolescent mental health symptoms (internalizing and externalizing) in Latinx families. Latinx parents (N = 210, Mage = 42.63, SD = 8.68, 56% fem

A Refugee Rose of competencies and capabilities for mental healthcare of refugees.

In this paper, I set out the challenges of care for refugees and suggest approaches to assessment and intervention. I discuss clinical interventions that can address the immediate concern of the clinician in a bio-psycho-social framework, and the value of considering eco-social and structural influences that can hinder recovery and perpetuate inequalities. Refugees face multiple adversities before, during and after escaping from life-threatening situations, political violence, torture and persecution. They present with complex health needs and encounter hostility from host countries and public

Higher order language competence and adolescent mental health.

BACKGROUND: Clinic and community-based epidemiological studies have shown an association between child psychopathology and language impairment. The demands on language for social and academic adjustment shift dramatically during adolescence and the ability to understand the nonliteral meaning in language represented by higher order language becomes essential. OBJECTIVES: : This article reports on the association between difficulties in higher order language skills, reading, cognition, and social-emotional adjustment in adolescents. METHOD: : 144 clinic-referred and 186 comparison youth aged

Mental health literacy among resident physicians in Türkiye: a neglected competency in medical training?

BACKGROUND: Mental health literacy (MHL) is an essential but often overlooked competency in medical training. Deficits in MHL among physicians may compromise both patient care and physician well-being. METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with 305 resident physicians at Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine. Data were collected using the 22-item Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS). Group differences were analyzed using t-tests and ANOVA, with effect sizes and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) reported. RESULTS: The mean MHLS score was 16.86 ± 2.88 (range: 0-22). Female r

Mental health professionals' attitudes towards mental competency and involuntary commitment in anorexia nervosa: Construction, validation and results of the ACINOVAN questionnaire.

INTRODUCTION: Anorexia nervosa is a serious disorder that causes high rates of morbidity and mortality. Involuntary treatments are only legally admissible if the patient is not competent. However, assessing their capacity can be really complex. This implies that the final decision can be influenced by the individual attitudes of the physician. OBJECTIVE: To create and empirically validate a questionnaire in Spanish that makes it possible to measure the attitude towards capacity and involuntary commitment and compare between categorical groups. METHODS: The sample consisted of 338 mental heal

Mens Rea, Competency to Stand Trial, and Guilty but Mentally Ill.

The recent U.S. Supreme Court case of Kahler v. Kansas determined that the Kansas mens rea laws were sufficient to stand as the state's only insanity defense statute. In this issue of The Journal, Landess and Holoyda describe the legal reasoning that led to this decision and the persistent concerns about the wisdom of the decision. This commentary is meant to serve as a mirror image to Landess and Holoyda's article, as it focuses on the impact of Kahler on severely mentally ill individuals faced with criminal charges in the four mens rea states: Montana, Idaho, Utah, and Kansas. The authors as

What motivates community mental and behavioral health organizations to participate in LGBTQ+ cultural competency trainings?

The constantly evolving language, understanding, and cultural context regarding the mental health of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender diverse individuals (LGBTQ+) require mental health providers to obtain LGBTQ+ cultural competency training to be affirmative and effective with this population. Unfortunately, many providers are not obtaining this ongoing training and mental health disparities continue to plague LGBTQ+ populations. Guided by the Consolidation Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR), we conducted eight focus groups with community mental

Predictors of cross-lingual competence in Australian mental health professionals.

OBJECTIVE: Although spoken language plays a crucial role in psychotherapy with clients whose native language differs from the language of therapy, research on mental health practitioners' language proficiency remains scarce. Our study explored predictors of MHP's self-reported competence in cross-lingual practice. METHOD: Four hundred and fourteen MHP's working in Australia, completed an online survey measuring key features of cross-lingual competence (self-perceptions, knowledge of client difficulties, barriers imposed by language), as well as engagement in multicultural training, experience

Assessing School Nurses' Mental Health Competence Training Needs.

BackgroundSchool nurses play a critical role in addressing K-12 students' mental and behavioral health (MH) needs, yet many report limited preparation to manage these concerns. Existing MH training often excludes school nurses or focuses narrowly on literacy, leaving gaps in communication, referral processes, and evidence-based interventions. This study evaluated school nurses' experiences and preferences for ongoing professional development.MethodsA descriptive survey was conducted with 15 school nurses from diverse educational settings assessed priority training areas and preferred formats.

Developing cultural competence in caring for people with mental health conditions.

As cultural competence becomes embedded in healthcare, it is important to consider this concept in the context of caring for patients with mental health conditions in general hospital settings. Adult nurses are likely to encounter patients with such conditions who are experiencing a mental health crisis in their practice. However, a lack of opportunity to develop the skills required to engage with patients whose behaviours may be unfamiliar or perceived as challenging can result in suboptimal experiences of care. Developing cultural competence can enhance adult nurses' ability to deliver effec

Cultural Competency and Implicit Bias: Decreasing Barriers to Native American and First Nation Mental Health Care.

Indigenous populations have different perceptions of mental health compared to Western medicine. Implicit bias and limited cultural awareness among healthcare professionals contribute to disparities in care, misdiagnosis, and disengagement. This article examines how historical trauma, spiritual perspectives, and systemic barriers hinder access to care for the Indigenous population. Implicit bias training can mitigate unconscious assumptions in nursing practice, influencing care delivery at the meso level and contributing to broader institutional change and health equity at the macro level. Neglect and adolescent internalizing mental health: Testing competing longitudinal hypotheses.

Neglect remains understudied compared to other forms of maltreatment. While studies have shown that neglect has negative effects on mental health in adolescence, yet unresolved is whether these impacts result from critical period or cumulative effects. In the present article, we use a novel approach to compare these two hypotheses from the impact of two types of neglect, failure to provide (FTP) and lack of supervision (LOS), on adolescent depression and internalizing symptoms. Data derive from the LONGSCAN consortium, a diverse, multi-site, prospective study of children from approximately age

Promoting mental health in intensive care unit onboarding: a consensus-based iterative development of a competency-based framework.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare professionals in intensive care units face substantial psychological stress, yet structured educational approaches to promote mental health during early training remain underdeveloped. While current recommendations advocate early integration of psychosocial support into onboarding, they have not been translated into competency-based educational frameworks aligned with modern health professions education. OBJECTIVE: To develop a competency-based educational framework for ICU onboarding that integrates mental health promotion into structured learning objectives across kno
