Associations of mental disorders with maternal health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders are highly prevalent during pregnancy and are associated with unfavorable obstetrical outcomes, including maternal mortality. This study examined specific and combined associations of mental disorders with maternal morbidities. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of all delivery hospitalizations between the ages of 12-55 years was conducted using the National Inpatient Sample data from 2017. The International Classification of Diseases-10 codes were used to define exposures including depressive, anxiety, post-traumatic stress (PTSD), sleep, and bipolar disorders, and

Air pollution and mental health: associations, mechanisms and methods.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: There is increasing interest in the links between exposure to air pollution and a range of health outcomes. The association with mental health however is much less established. This article reviews developments in the field over the past 12 months, highlighting the evidence for causation, associations between multiple air pollutants and mental health outcomes, and assesses the challenges of researching this topic. RECENT FINDINGS: Increasingly rigorous methods are being applied to the investigation of a broader range of mental health outcomes. These methods include basic sc

Laryngeal Pathologies and Their Associations With Mental Health Disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Mental health disorders are very common. Understanding their clinical manifestations in terms of voice and laryngeal disorders (VLD) is important because they constitute a significant proportion of all patients seen by otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. In this study, we examine different mental disorders (MDs) and their presenting symptoms and diagnoses of VLD. METHODS: Case series study, retrospective chart review of patients seen between January 2016 and December 2017 at the Johns Hopkins Voice Center. Diagnoses, demographic data, and comorbidities were collected. VLD were g

Associations of Mindful Partnering With Mental and Relational Health.

Mindfulness is beneficial for mental health and romantic relationships. Recently, there has been a novel application of mindfulness to romantic relationships called "mindful partnering" (MP). Emerging evidence from interpersonal mindfulness frameworks suggests that relational forms of mindfulness may provide unique benefits for individuals and their relationships beyond those associated with partners' individual intrapersonal mindfulness. However, interpersonal mindfulness in relationships (MP) is multifaceted, and previous examinations of interpersonal mindfulness in couples have been limited

'Flashforward' mental imagery in adolescents: exploring developmental differences and associations with mental health.

BACKGROUND: Future events can spring to mind unbidden in the form of involuntary mental images also known as 'flashforwards', which are deemed important for understanding and treating emotional distress. However, there has been little exploration of this form of imagery in youth, and even less so in those with high psychopathology vulnerabilities (e.g. due to developmental differences associated with neurodiversity or maltreatment). AIMS: We aimed to test whether flashforwards are heightened (e.g. more frequent and emotional) in autistic and maltreatment-exposed adolescents relative to typica

Reading and associations with brain health, cognition, well-being, and mental health.

Growing recognition of the importance of prevention in mental health has led to increased interest in modifiable lifestyle factors that support brain health, cognition, and well-being. This editorial examines evidence for an accessible and low-cost protective factor across the lifespan, namely reading for pleasure. Drawing on subjective surveys and objective studies using longitudinal, neuroimaging, and behavioral methods, we highlight converging findings that link reading engagement with improved brain and mental health, better cognitive performance, and reduced risk of cognitive decline. Tinnitus and its associations with general health, mental health and hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: A deeper knowledge of tinnitus is essential in order to better manage and treat tinnitus and its effects. Most studies to date are based on small samples and/or conducted in clinical settings. In this study we assessed the associations between tinnitus, general and mental health, hearing status and demographics in a large population cohort study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Busselton Healthy Aging Study recruited people born between 1946 and 1964. Data were collected between 2010 and 2015. Logistic regression was used to examine the associations between tinnitus and its effect on d

Associations between multiple neurodevelopmental disorders and mental health in children.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the association between multiple NDDs and the prevalence and severity of current depression and anxiety among children aged 3-17 years. METHODS: We analyzed parent- or caregiver-reported data from 2016 to 2023 US National Survey of Children's Health. Children aged 3-17 years were included. We considered a broader spectrum of NDDs by including behavioral problems and grouped children based on the number of NDDs (out of ten): no multiple NDDs (none or one NDD), two NDDs, three NDDs, four NDDs, and five or more NDDs. Four mental health outcomes were measured: d

Associations Between Secondhand Smoke and Mental Health in Korean Adolescents.

This study assessed secondhand smoke exposure among nonsmokers and examined its association with mental health in Korean adolescents. We used the 14th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey in 2018 to extract data and analyzed 60 040 adolescents through three secondhand smoke exposure categories: home, school, and public places. Mental health included stress, insufficient sleep, depressive symptoms, and suicidal ideation. Secondhand smoke exposure was reported at 23.0% for home, 20.0% for school, and 51.4% for public places. Secondhand smoke exposures were associated with stress insufficient sleep,

Inter- and Intrapersonal Associations Between Physiology and Mental Health: A Longitudinal Study Using Wearables and Mental Health Surveys.

BACKGROUND: More than 1 in 8 people potentially live with a mental health disorder, yet fewer than half receive treatment. Poor mental health awareness may contribute to this treatment gap, and digital health technologies, like wearables and their associated phone- and web-based applications, have the potential to reduce the mental health awareness gap due to their ease of adoption, objective feedback, and high rate of engagement. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to better understand the relationships between mental health and objective wearable-derived metrics. METHODS: We examined the longitudi

Clinician-rated mental health in outpatient child and adolescent mental health services: associations with parent, teacher and adolescent ratings.

BACKGROUND: Clinician-rated measures are used extensively in child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS). The Health of the Nation Outcome Scales for Children and Adolescents (HoNOSCA) is a short clinician-rated measure developed for ordinary clinical practice, with increasing use internationally. Several studies have investigated its psychometric properties, but there are few data on its correspondence with other methods, rated by other informants. We compared the HoNOSCA with the well-established Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment (ASEBA) questionnaires: the Child Behav

Longitudinal Associations Between Resilience, Emotion Regulation and Mental Health in Adolescents.

The adolescent phase, which is already challenging, has been exacerbated by the psychological impact and social restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to the onset of psychiatric disorders. Strengthening psychological resilience (PR) and emotion regulation (ER) during challenging periods is vital to foster protective factors and cultivating effective coping strategies. This study aimed to longitudinally examine the association between ER and PR in Turkish adolescents while considering mental health as a control variable. Data collection took place twice, with an interval of thr

Evaluating Associations Between Friendship Characteristics and Mental, Physical, and Cognitive Health.

Friendships are cited as important contributors to physical, mental, and cognitive health, but many studies rely on single-time-point measures and models that conflate within- and between-person variation. Using data from 23,248 middle-aged and older adults in the Health and Retirement Study, we applied advanced longitudinal models-specifically STARTS variants of ARTS and RI-CLPM-to examine reciprocal associations between friendship characteristics (number, contact frequency, quality) and health indicators (self-rated health, depression, cognition) over a 16-year period.
