Mental health recovery has not been examined widely in individuals with mental illnesses reentering the community from correctional settings. An important component of mental health recovery is engaging in work and many with lived mental health experiences become peer support specialists, yet little is known how this process unfolds for individuals who also have incarceration histories. Using life history phenomenological interviewing, this study investigates recovery pathways for peer support specialists with incarceration histories. Findings show that experiences of hope, connectedness, iden

BACKGROUND: Globally, mental health disorders are on the rise in response to both natural and man-made crises. Especially in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) like Ethiopia, this is further stretching the already limited mental health facilities, necessitating an innovative solution to the challenges it presents. With the primary goal of examining methods to enhance the quality and accessibility of mental health care in Ethiopia, the Center for International Health at the University hospital of Ludwig Maximilian University Munich (CIHLMU), the International Network for Cooperation in Men

For people with mental illness, experiences of homelessness can complicate mental health recovery processes. This study used longitudinal data from a randomized controlled trial of housing first (HF) to examine predictors of recovery among homeless people with mental illness. Findings showed that health and community predictors were most strongly associated with mental health recovery. Receipt of HF did not have any effect on changes in recovery scores at follow-up. Overall, the findings suggest that interventions aimed at preventing chronic homelessness, strengthening social networks and comm

OBJECTIVE: Patient-centered communication has been linked to patient satisfaction, treatment adherence and outcomes. Shared decision making (SDM) has been advocated as an important and ethically essential aspect of patient-centered care, but SDM has received relatively little attention in mental health care, despite studies indicating that consumers want to be involved in making decisions. This is particularly important in a recovery-oriented system, where consumers are active participants in their treatment and rehabilitation. Because medication management is a key component of recovery from

BACKGROUND: Forced migration leaves deep marks on the psychological well-being of migrants, with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other psychological conditions being prevalent among them. While research has clarified the extent to which pre-migration trauma is a predictor of mental health outcomes, the role of post-migration stressors in the settlement environment are yet to be fully characterized.
METHODS: We monitored mental health of a cohort of 100 asylum-seekers during their 14-day COVID-19-related quarantine in reception facilities in Rome, Italy, through the administration of

OBJECTIVE: This article examines the relationship between inpatient mental health units' adherence to recovery-oriented care and 30-day patient readmission.
METHOD: The sample included patients admitted to one of 34 Veterans Health Administration inpatient mental health units. Recovery-oriented care was assessed using interviews and site visits. Patient characteristics and readmission data were derived from administrative data.
FINDINGS: Overall recovery orientation was not associated with readmission. Exploratory analyses found higher scores on a subsample of items pertaining to inpatient t

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: The need for recovery narratives written by people with lived experience of mental illness is widely acknowledged in mental health research. Insights from lived experience narratives can assist nurses to reflect on practice in new ways. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: By describing the lived experience of one man's journey through adolescence crippled by anxiety to become one of the Australia's leading consumer advocates, this paper emphasizes the importance of retaining hope no matter how difficult challenges become. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PR

OBJECTIVE: The majority of people in psychiatric care worldwide are sexually active, and studies have revealed sharply elevated rates of HIV infection in that group compared with the general population. Recovery-oriented treatment does not routinely address sexuality. We examined the relationship between gender, severe mental illness diagnosis, and stigma experiences related to sexuality among people in psychiatric outpatient care.
METHOD: Sexually active adults attending 8 public outpatient psychiatric clinics in Rio de Janeiro (N = 641) were interviewed for psychiatric diagnosis and stigma

BACKGROUND: Whilst the concept of personal recovery in the mental health field, supporting people with mental illness in finding purpose and meaning in their lives, is gaining international recognition, many healthcare providers remain more familiar with clinical recovery, which focuses on medication and symptom management. In this review, we focused on personal recovery-oriented training interventions designed to improve recovery-related knowledge, attitudes, and competency among healthcare professionals and peer support workers caring for people with mental illness within mental health and s

Objectives The aim of this paper is to revisit the Global Model of Public Mental Health (GMPMH) in light of the 4th Civic Forum. Recovery mentors of the University of Recovery chaired this public event, which was held in East-end Montreal, Canada, in 2016. The University of Recovery is a concept of co-learning among its members. Methods Being able to refer to international conventions and human rights standards is a key component of a genuine global approach that is supportive of individuals and communities in their quest for recovery and full citizenship. The GMPMH was inspired by the ecologic

This paper is designed to explore and examine the experience of loss following a hysterectomy. The painful aftermath of the ordeal and the work involved in the healing process are outlined and discussed from both a personal and professional perspective. The manuscript highlights a number of inner struggles that had to negotiated before an equilibrium in mental health and wellbeing was successfully achieved. The forces that move the dialogue forward from one theme to the other are complex in their simplicity. The enigmatic dimensions of physical pain and emotional torment are expressed and work

Peer recovery services are a community-based treatment option for people suffering from mental illness and/or substance use problems. Peer services provide an alternative to inpatient care and can help decrease costs associated with hospitalization or incarceration of the mentally ill. Yet, scant research has explored the effect of these services, particularly in rural communities. The current study assesses the impact of peer services on peer mentees' and mentors' recovery capital, quality of life, and general wellness. Consumers of peer services completed three surveys every three months for

Current public policies emphasize the need for recovery-oriented services. However, a lack of consensus on the meaning of recovery poses challenges for implementing recovery-oriented interventions. This study aims to establish an international consensus on the key elements of recovery from the clinician perspective, specifically from recovery-oriented mental health professionals. A three-round Delphi study was conducted to gather expert opinions on the definition of recovery, progress indicators, and factors that facilitate and hinder recovery. Seventy-eight recovery-oriented professionals agr

BACKGROUND: Recovery is a journey not only of personal change but also of social reengagement. It underlines the essence of social environments that are supportive to the recovery of people with ongoing mental health issues. The process of recovery also affects other actors, and likewise these actors exert their influence on the recovery of their family member or friend.
OBJECTIVE: Since 2009, we have been studying whether the decision-making model called family group conferencing (FGC) helps mental health clients increase their self-reliance. The essence of FGC is that individuals who experi

AIMS: Recovery Colleges are opening internationally. The evaluation focus has been on outcomes for Recovery College students who use mental health services. However, benefits may also arise for: staff who attend or co-deliver courses; the mental health and social care service hosting the Recovery College; and wider society. A theory-based change model characterising how Recovery Colleges impact at these higher levels is needed for formal evaluation of their impact, and to inform future Recovery College development. The aim of this study was to develop a stratified theory identifying candidate

Over the past quarter century, Recovery has become the hegemonic model guiding mental health policy. Advocates presented Recovery as a radical departure from the past, with the promise of dramatically improved outcomes for those with serious mental illness. This article looks at the implementation of Recovery-based policies in California from the 1990s to the present and interrogates the ways these policies emerged out of and reinforced many of the problems they were intended to solve. Against the backdrop of welfare reform, managed care, and a growing belief in market forces and individual re

Despite the high prevalence of tobacco use, disproportionate tobacco consumption, and excess morbidity and mortality, smokers with mental illness have reduced access to tobacco dependence treatment across the health care spectrum. We have developed a comprehensive model for Mental Health Tobacco Recovery in New Jersey (MHTR-NJ) that has the overarching goal of improving tobacco cessation for smokers with serious mental illness. Important steps involve engaging patients, professionals and the community to increase understanding that addressing tobacco use is important. In addition to increasing

BACKGROUND: The rising prevalence of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) parallels increasing rates of anxiety and/or depression (Anx/Dep), yet the impact on recovery remains poorly defined. This study evaluates how Anx/Dep influences recovery and patient-reported outcomes after TKA, and whether Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Global Health Short Form (10 items) (PROMIS-10) Mental Health T-scores provide additional insight.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 624 primary TKA patients (July 2023-October 2024) was performed. Patients were grouped by Anx/Dep diagnosis (309 with

TOPIC: Although individuals with medical problems (e.g., diabetes, hypertension) can monitor their symptoms using objective measures (e.g., blood glucose, blood pressure), objective measures are not typically used by individuals with psychotic disorders to monitor symptoms of mental illness.
PURPOSE: To examine the benefits and limitations of the use of video self-observation for treatment of individuals with psychotic disorders.
SOURCES USED: The authors reviewed studies examining video self-observation among individuals with severe mental illnesses.

This mixed-methods study uses Maslow's hierarchy as a theoretical lens to investigate the experiences of 63 newly enrolled clients of housing first and traditional programs for adults with serious mental illness who have experienced homelessness. Quantitative findings suggests that identifying self-actualization goals is associated with not having one's basic needs met rather than from the fulfillment of basic needs. Qualitative findings suggest a more complex relationship between basic needs, goal setting, and the meaning of self-actualization. Transforming mental health care into a recovery-
