Using Electronic Health Records to Enhance a Peer Health Navigator Intervention: A Randomized Pilot Test for Individuals with Serious Mental Illness and Housing Instability.

Individuals with serious mental illnesses have high rates of comorbid physical health issues and have numerous barriers to addressing their health and health care needs. The present pilot study tested the feasibility of a modified form of the "Bridge" peer-health navigator intervention delivered in a usual care setting by agency personnel. The modifications concerned the use of an electronic personal health record with individuals experiencing with housing instability. Twenty participants were randomized to receive the intervention immediately or after 6 months. Health navigator contacts and u

The relationship between object-based spatial ability and virtual navigation performance.

Spatial navigation is a multi-faceted behaviour drawing on many different aspects of cognition. Visuospatial abilities, such as mental rotation and visuospatial working memory, in particular, may be key factors. A range of tests have been developed to assess visuospatial processing and memory, but how such tests relate to navigation ability remains unclear. This understanding is important to advance tests of navigation for disease monitoring in various disorders (e.g., Alzheimer's disease) where spatial impairment is an early symptom. Here, we report the use of an established mobile gaming app

Dissociable spatial memory systems revealed by typical and atypical human development.

Rodent lesion studies have revealed the existence of two causally dissociable spatial memory systems, localized to the hippocampus and striatum that are preferentially sensitive to environmental boundaries and landmark objects, respectively. Here we test whether these two memory systems are causally dissociable in humans by examining boundary- and landmark-based memory in typical and atypical development. Adults with Williams syndrome (WS)-a developmental disorder with known hippocampal abnormalities-and typical children and adults, performed a navigation task that involved learning locations

Always Getting Lost: Defining Developmental Topographical Disorientation (DTD)-A Systematic Literature Review.

Developmental topographical disorientation (DTD) refers to a condition of highly impaired navigation ability in healthy individuals. DTD often leads to severe consequences in daily life, affecting education and professional choices and limited everyday mobility. Since its first description in 2009, a substantial number of empirical studies on DTD have appeared, but a clear clinical definition of DTD that can be used to develop a behavioral assessment tool is not yet available. The aim of the current study was to shed more light on the precise behavioral characteristics of DTD by examining the

Design of a cluster-randomized, hybrid type 1 effectiveness-implementation trial of a care navigation intervention to increase substance use disorder treatment engagement: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Practical and motivational barriers can deter people from engaging in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment, even those who seek treatment. Care navigation is a psychosocial intervention that seeks to facilitate patients' timely access to care by identifying and intervening upon barriers. Few trials have tested the effectiveness of care navigation when embedding in real-world healthcare, and no trials have studied the process of implementing care navigation into clinical practice. This protocol describes a study that will evaluate whether care navigation can increase treatment eng

Time Is Not Space: Core Computations and Domain-Specific Networks for Mental Travels.

UNLABELLED: Humans can consciously project themselves in the future and imagine themselves at different places. Do mental time travel and mental space navigation abilities share common cognitive and neural mechanisms? To test this, we recorded fMRI while participants mentally projected themselves in time or in space (e.g., 9 years ago, in Paris) and ordered historical events from their mental perspective. Behavioral patterns were comparable for mental time and space and shaped by self-projection and by the distance of historical events to the mental position of the self, suggesting the existen

HIV Treatment and Mental Health Outcomes Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men Living With HIV in a Pilot Multicomponent Intervention in Guatemala City.

Globally, gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) are disproportionately affected by HIV, but few interventions address mental health and HIV outcomes among GBMSM living with HIV. The purpose of this study was to pilot a multicomponent intervention, integrating emotional well-being (EW) and health navigation for GBMSM living with HIV in Guatemala City. We implemented a 12-month intervention, including a four-session EW component and a health navigation component among newly diagnosed and reengaged GBMSM with HIV (n = 112). We conducted socio-behavioral surveys at baseline an

Pure representational neglect and navigational deficits in a case with preserved visuo-spatial working memory.

We describe a patient who, after right hemisphere damage, showed severe, persistent, pure representational neglect but no evidence of perceptual neglect and no deficits in spatial working memory when evaluated with a traditional clinical test (Corsi Block Tapping test). This finding provides evidence against a full explanation of representational neglect within the context of visuo-spatial working memory. Indeed, this patient showed a peculiar deficit in navigational tasks requiring re-orientation in a novel environment by means of his mental representation of the environment. Since no represe

Wayfinding and spatial perception among adolescents with mild intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: The study's aim was to examine whether spatial orientation can be improved in students with cognitive disabilities. METHOD: Participants were 55 boys and girls with attention deficit and mild cognitive impairment from a special education school. The procedure included an intervention for two experimental groups that studied wayfinding and orientation in the environment: group #1 learned to use a map while navigating, and group #2 learned to use a Google navigation app with voice instructions. Two pre-post tests were applied: (1) Mental folding test for children (MFTC) and (2) fiel

Navigation strategies as revealed by error patterns on the Magic Carpet test in children with cerebral palsy.

INTRODUCTION: Short-term memory develops differently in navigation vs. manual space. The Magic Carpet (MC) is a novel navigation test derived from the Walking Corsi Test and the manual Corsi Block-tapping Task (CBT). The MC requires mental rotations and executive function. In Cerebral Palsy (CP), CBT, and MC scores relate differently to clinical and lesional factors. Hypotheses of this study are: that frontal lesion specifically affect navigation in CP; that brain lesions affect MC cognitive strategies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-two children with spastic CP, aged 5 to 14 years, 14 with a

Despite dense amnesia, patients with hippocampal lesions show partially intact navigation for recent and remotely learned environments.

The extent to which medial temporal lobe amnesia affects recently compared to remotely formed memories remains debated. Some studies have investigated this issue by employing either verbal recall of routes or map drawing, suggesting profound loss of recent yet largely intact remote spatial memory. Here, we studied navigation in two patients with amnesia and their matched controls by recreating virtual versions of their recent and remote neighborhoods. Both patients showed largely intact navigation of both their recent and remote neighborhoods, and, in most cases, navigated them better than a c

Enriched environment has limited capacity for the correction of hippocampal memory-dependent schizoid behaviors in rats with early postnatal NMDAR dysfunction.

Pre- and early postnatal stress can cause dysfunction of the N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) and thereby promote the development of hippocampus memory-dependent schizoid abnormalities of navigation in space, time, and knowledge. An enriched environment improves mental abilities in humans and animals. Whether an enriched environment can prevent the development of schizoid symptoms induced by neonatal NMDAR dysfunction was the central question of our paper. The experimental animals were Wistar rats. Early postnatal NMDAR dysfunction was created by systemic treatment of rat pups with the NM

Impact of Bilateral Vestibulopathy on Spatial and Nonspatial Cognition: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: Hearing loss is considered an independent risk factor for dementia. Growing evidence in animal and human studies suggest that not only hearing loss but also vestibular loss might result in cognitive deficits. The objective of this study is to evaluate the presence of spatial and nonspatial cognitive deficits in patients with bilateral vestibulopathy. As different causes of bilateral vestibulopathy are associated with hearing loss, the objective is to evaluate if these cognitive deficits are due to the vestibular loss of the patients with bilateral vestibulopathy, or to their hearin

Mental Health Monitoring in Esports Athletes Using an mHealth App: Requirements Analysis and Usability Study.

BACKGROUND: Esports athletes face substantial psychological stressors comparable to those experienced by traditional athletes, yet mental health tools tailored to their specific needs remain scarce. OBJECTIVE: This study addresses this critical gap by introducing MindAthlete, a prototype for a user-centered mobile health (mHealth) app intended to enhance mental health monitoring and support among esports athletes. METHODS: A 3-stage development process was used over 5 months. First, structured qualitative interviews were conducted online via Google Meet with 7 experienced (sports) psychologi

The Community Navigator Study: a feasibility randomised controlled trial of an intervention to increase community connections and reduce loneliness for people with complex anxiety or depression.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is associated with poor health outcomes at all ages, including shorter life expectancy and greater risk of developing depression. People with mental health problems are particularly vulnerable to loneliness and, for those with anxiety or depression, loneliness is associated with poorer outcomes. Interventions which support people to utilise existing networks and access new social contact are advocated in policy but there is little evidence regarding their effectiveness. People with mental health problems have potential to benefit from interventions to reduce loneliness,

The role of cognitive style in route learning from maps.

Route information learned from maps can be mentally represented in various formats, such as verbal descriptions, spatial layouts, or mental imagery. Across two studies, we examined whether individuals' preferred modes of representing information (visual-verbal cognitive style) are associated with map-based route learning. In Study 1 (N = 70), participants learned three different routes from three separate maps and, following each learning phase, completed a corresponding memory test in either verbal, visual, or spatial format. Verbal, object-visual, and spatial-visual cognitive style dimension

Wheel-chair driving improvement following visuo-manual prism adaptation.

Prism adaptation has been used for several years to improve several aspects of unilateral neglect. Parameters ranging from the classical neuropsychological tests to mental imagery or to tactile extinction have been successfully ameliorated following a brief period of adaptation to wedge prisms shifting the visual field to the right. However the potential therapeutic implications of this technique depend on the investigation of more functional and ecological parameters. Here we describe a patient with left hemiplegia and unilateral neglect who was impaired during wheel-chair navigation in the c

Barriers and facilitators of linkage to HIV primary care in New York City.

One in 5 people living with HIV are unaware of their status; they account for an estimated 51% of new infections. HIV transmission can be reduced through a "Test and Treat" strategy, which can decrease both viral load and risk behaviors. However, linkage of newly diagnosed HIV-positive persons to care has proved challenging. We report quantitative and qualitative data on linkage to care from HIV testing sites that partnered with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to implement "The Bronx Knows" (TBK), an initiative that tested 607,570 residents over 3 years. During TBK, p

Spatial and numerical abilities without a complete natural language.

We studied the cognitive abilities of a 13-year-old deaf child, deprived of most linguistic input from late infancy, in a battery of tests designed to reveal the nature of numerical and geometrical abilities in the absence of a full linguistic system. Tests revealed widespread proficiency in basic symbolic and non-symbolic numerical computations involving the use of both exact and approximate numbers. Tests of spatial and geometrical abilities revealed an interesting patchwork of age-typical strengths and localized deficits. In particular, the child performed extremely well on navigation tasks

Humans navigate with stereo olfaction.

Human navigation relies on inputs to our paired eyes and ears. Although we also have two nasal passages, there has been little empirical indication that internostril differences yield directionality in human olfaction without involving the trigeminal system. By using optic flow that captures the pattern of apparent motion of surface elements in a visual scene, we demonstrate through formal psychophysical testing that a moderate binaral concentration disparity of a nontrigeminal odorant consistently biases recipients' perceived direction of self-motion toward the higher-concentration side, desp
