[Recall of the prime minister for the assessment of mental status].

A number of cognitive screening tests assess knowledge of the head of state or current prime minister. It is supposed that correct recall is a valid indicator of cognitive functioning. A consecutive sample of 259 visitors of a psychogeriatric day care center were rated for knowledge of the prime minister's name. Recall of his name was not dependent on level of education. The mean score on an independent screening test was significantly higher for those who knew the prime minister's name than for those who failed to answer the question. More men than women correctly answered the question, regar

Mental representations of attachment figures facilitate recovery following upsetting autobiographical memory recall.

A growing literature shows that even the symbolic presence of an attachment figure facilitates the regulation of negative affect triggered by external stressors. Yet, in daily life, pernicious stressors are often internally generated--recalling an upsetting experience reliably increases negative affect, rumination, and susceptibility to physical and psychological health problems. The present research provides the first systematic examination of whether activating the mental representation of an attachment figure enhances the regulation of affect triggered by thinking about upsetting memories.

Validity of a semantically cued recall procedure for the mini-mental state examination.

OBJECTIVE: The validity of supplementing the three-item recall portion of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) with a cued recall procedure to help specify the nature of patients' memory problems was examined. METHOD: Subjects were 247 individuals representing three diagnostic groups: Alzheimer's disease (AD), subcortical vascular ischemic dementia (SVaD), and normal controls. Individuals were administered a battery of neuropsychological tests, including the MMSE, as part of a comprehensive evaluation for the presence of dementia or other neurologic disorder. RESULTS: MMSE performance di

Ventromedial prefrontal cortex activity during extinction recall suggests successful extinction learning via mental imagery.

Mental imagery is an important element of psychological therapies for fear-related disorders. The present study evaluated the efficacy of imagery extinction using a within-subject design allowing for the comparison of a conditioned stimulus extinguished via mental imagery (CS+Ei) to an unextinguished conditioned stimulus (CS+U) during extinction recall. Twenty-eight human participants underwent differential fear conditioning during functional magnetic resonance imagining. Successful acquisition of differential fear conditioning was confirmed by self-reported fear, skin conductance response (SC

A generalized cortical activity pattern at internally generated mental context boundaries during unguided narrative recall.

Current theory and empirical studies suggest that humans segment continuous experiences into events based on the mismatch between predicted and actual sensory inputs; detection of these 'event boundaries' evokes transient neural responses. However, boundaries can also occur at transitions between internal mental states, without relevant external input changes. To what extent do such 'internal boundaries' share neural response properties with externally driven boundaries? We conducted an fMRI experiment where subjects watched a series of short movies and then verbally recalled the movies, unpro

10-minute delayed recall from the modified mini-mental state test predicts Alzheimer's disease pathology.

We compared the sensitivity and specificity of two delayed recall scores from the Modified Mini-Mental State (3MS) test with consensus clinical diagnosis to differentiate cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer's disease (AD) versus non-AD pathologies. At a memory disorders clinic, 117 cognitively impaired patients were administered a baseline 3MS test and received a contemporaneous consensus clinical diagnosis. Their brains were examined after death about 5 years later. Using logistic regression with forward selection to predict pathologically defined AD versus non-AD, 10-min delayed recall ent

Kilpauk Mental Hospital: The Bethlem of South Asia - A recall of its history prior to 1970.

PERIOD OF CUSTODIAL CARE ONLY: The magnificent "Institute of Mental Health" has its history almost from 1795 when the East India company appointed Surgeon Valentine Conolly to be in charge of a "House for accommodating persons of unsound mind." After a few transitions, backed by a government order for the construction of a lunatic asylum in a 66 1/2 acre site, the asylum started functioning from 1871. The period of about six decades from its inception could be referred to as "the period of custodial care." However, the quality of care for the general medical problems gradually improved with th

Effects of odor-induced autobiographical memory recall interventions on the mental health of individuals with problem drinking behaviors.

The number of alcohol use disorders (AUD) worldwide has increased; therefore, understanding and preventing alcohol addiction is of utmost importance. The objective of this study was to examine the influence of memory recall interventions using the odor of alcohol on mental health and drinking behavior. We used three different studies, two online and one in a laboratory, where participants with and without problematic drinking behaviors were asked to recall autobiographical memories evoked by the odor of alcohol. They were asked to complete questionnaires to measure their autobiographical memor

A match made in mental space: Alignment between target skew and cue organization influences recall of attribute values.

Recall is often more successful for items from sparse (distinct) regions and less successful from dense (less distinct) regions in memory space. We propose that retrieval cues are also organized into crowded and less crowded regions depending on distinctiveness, and that successful retrieval depends on the distributional match between the organization of targets and cues. As a real-world test case, we used the labels from the European Union's old (A+++, A++, A+, A, B, C, D) and new (A, B, C, D, E, F, G) energy-label scale as cues for memory retrieval of appliances' kilowatt-hour (kWh) values.

Conversion practice recall and mental health symptoms in sexual and gender minority adults in the USA: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Conversion practices are associated with psychological morbidity, yet few studies have evaluated differences between efforts to change gender identity, sexual orientation, or both. We aimed to examine the individual and joint association of conversion practice recall targeted at gender identity or sexual orientation, or both, with current mental health symptoms among sexual and gender minority people. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from The PRIDE Study, a US-based, online, prospective cohort study of sexual and gender minority adults who were recruited through socia

Digital Clock and Recall is superior to the Mini-Mental State Examination for the detection of mild cognitive impairment and mild dementia.

BACKGROUND: Disease-modifying treatments for Alzheimer's disease highlight the need for early detection of cognitive decline. However, at present, most primary care providers do not perform routine cognitive testing, in part due to a lack of access to practical cognitive assessments, as well as time and resources to administer and interpret the tests. Brief and sensitive digital cognitive assessments, such as the Digital Clock and Recall (DCR™), have the potential to address this need. Here, we examine the advantages of DCR over the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) in detecting mild cognit

Recalled parental rearing behavior shapes mental health after preterm birth: Evidence from the Gutenberg Prematurity Study.

Associations of preterm birth with later-life mental distress are well-established. A research gap concerns the role of psychosocial factors such as the family context. This study investigated associations of recalled parental rearing behavior with both preterm birth characteristics and psychological symptom burden later in life. Based on birth registry data of the Mainz University Hospital in Germany (infants born between 1969 and 2002) and using a selection algorithm, a cohort study comprising four gestational age (GA) strata was conducted (≥ 37 weeks: n = 138; 33-36 weeks: n = 132; 29-32 we

Utility of a modified Mini-Mental State Examination with extended delayed recall in screening for mild cognitive impairment and dementia among community dwelling elders.

The objective of this study was to test the utility of additional delayed recall of the three recall items of the Folstein Mini Mental State Evaluation (MMSE) as a screening measure for mild cognitive impairment and dementia in the elderly. It used a cross-sectional study of subjects, who were administered a brief memory screening battery which included the MMSE and extended delayed recall of the three MMSE recall items at 5 minute intervals. The criteria for cognitive status was determined on the basis of the neurological and neuropsychological evaluation. One hundred and two elderly persons

'I'm always walking on eggshells, and there's no chance of me ever being free': The mental health implications of Imprisonment for Public Protection in the community and post-recall.

BACKGROUND: Despite its abolition in 2012, the indeterminate sentence of Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP) still casts a long shadow over the justice system. Recall is a growing problem: In June 2020, there were 1,359 recalled IPP prisoners. Research documents the negative mental health implications of initial imprisonment under an IPP sentence; however, little is known about experiences on licence, or post-recall. AIMS: To explain how recalled IPP prisoners perceive being on licence, and in prison post-recall, to affect their mental wellbeing. METHODS: We draw on 31 interviews with r

What's past is prologue: Recalled parenting styles are associated with childhood cancer survivors' mental health outcomes more than 25 years after diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: With the increased survival rates of childhood cancer, long-term survivors' well-being over the life span has come into focus. A better understanding of the determinants of childhood cancer survivors' (CCS) mental health outcomes contributes to the identification of vulnerable individuals as well as to the development of evidence-based prevention and intervention efforts. It has been noted that psychosocial factors such as parental rearing behavior shape individual differences in mental health. There is also evidence that parents show altered parenting behavior in the face of child

Prediction accuracy dynamically modulates prediction-based false memory.

Recently, in a novel paradigm, Bulatova and Fukuda (Cognition, 255, Article 106013, 2025) showed that making an arbitrary prediction about a future event was sufficient to induce robust false memories of the event even when it never took place. Here, we tested whether this prediction-based false memory reflects the adaptability of our predictive processing mechanism. More precisely, we hypothesized that the higher the likelihood of prediction confirmation, the stronger the prediction-based false memory would be. In Experiment 1, we manipulated the prediction accuracy during encoding (30% and 7

Transdiagnostic and transtherapeutic strategies for optimising autobiographical memory.

Our memories for past personally experienced autobiographical events play an important role in therapy, irrespective of presenting issue, diagnoses or therapeutic modality. Here, we summarise evidence for how autobiographical memory abilities can influence our mental health and the relevance of this for the treatment of mental health problems. We then guide the reader through principles and strategies for optimising autobiographical memory within treatment. We ground these recommendations within research for stand-alone interventions for improving autobiographical memory and from studies of ho

Memory and Sleep: How Sleep Cognition Can Change the Waking Mind for the Better.

The memories that we retain can serve many functions. They guide our future actions, form a scaffold for constructing the self, and continue to shape both the self and the way we perceive the world. Although most memories we acquire each day are forgotten, those integrated within the structure of multiple prior memories tend to endure. A rapidly growing body of research is steadily elucidating how the consolidation of memories depends on their reactivation during sleep. Processing memories during sleep not only helps counteract their weakening but also supports problem solving, creativity, and

Memory and Counterfactual Simulations for Past Wrongdoings Foster Moral Learning and Improvement.

In four studies, we investigated the role of remembering, reflecting on, and mutating personal past moral transgressions to learn from those moral mistakes and to form intentions for moral improvement. Participants reported having ruminated on their past wrongdoings, particularly their more severe transgressions, and they reported having frequently thought about morally better ways in which they could have acted instead (i.e., morally upward counterfactuals; Studies 1-3). The more that participants reported having mentally simulated morally better ways in which they could have acted, the stron
