Mercury isotopes of key tissues document mercury metabolic processes in seabirds.

Seabirds accumulate significant amounts of mercury (Hg) due to their long-life span together with their medium to high trophic position in marine food webs. Hg speciation and Hg isotopic analyses of total Hg in different tissues (pectoral muscles, liver, brain, kidneys, blood and feathers) were assessed to investigate their detoxification mechanisms. Three species with contrasted ecological characteristics were studied: the Antarctic prion (zooplankton feeder), the white-chinned petrel (pelagic generalist consumer) and the southern giant petrel (scavenger on seabirds and marine mammals). The d

Mercury isotopes identify near-surface marine mercury in deep-sea trench biota.

Mercury isotopic compositions of amphipods and snailfish from deep-sea trenches reveal information on the sources and transformations of mercury in the deep oceans. Evidence for methyl-mercury subjected to photochemical degradation in the photic zone is provided by odd-mass independent isotope values (Δ199Hg) in amphipods from the Kermadec Trench, which average 1.57‰ (±0.14, n = 12, SD), and amphipods from the Mariana Trench, which average 1.49‰ (±0.28, n = 13). These values are close to the average value of 1.48‰ (±0.34, n = 10) for methyl-mercury in fish that feed at ∼500-m depth in the cent

Assessment of mercury exposure among small-scale gold miners using mercury stable isotopes.

Total mercury (Hg) concentrations in hair and urine are often used as biomarkers of exposure to fish-derived methylmercury (MeHg) and gaseous elemental Hg, respectively. We used Hg stable isotopes to assess the validity of these biomarkers among small-scale gold mining populations in Ghana and Indonesia. Urine from Ghanaian miners displayed similar Δ(199)Hg values to Hg derived from ore deposits (mean urine Δ(199)Hg=0.01‰, n=6). This suggests that urine total Hg concentrations accurately reflect exposure to inorganic Hg among this population. Hair samples from Ghanaian miners displayed low pos

Mercury isotopes link mercury in San Francisco Bay forage fish to surface sediments.

Identification of sources of biologically accessible Hg is necessary to fully evaluate Hg exposure in aquatic ecosystems. This study assesses the relationship between Hg in forage fish and Hg in surface sediments throughout San Francisco Bay (SF Bay) and evaluates processes influencing the incorporation of Hg into the aquatic food web. We measured the Hg stable isotope compositions of two nearshore fish species and compared them with previously reported analyses of colocated intertidal surface sediments. Fish δ(202)Hg values (mass-dependent fractionation) demonstrated a distinct spatial gradie

Review of stable mercury isotopes in ecology and biogeochemistry.

Due to the advent of cold vapor-multicollector-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (CV-MC-ICP-MS) in the past two decades, many research groups studying mercury (Hg) biogeochemistry have integrated stable Hg isotopes into their research. Currently, >200 studies using this technique have been published and this has greatly enhanced our understanding of the Hg biogeochemical cycle beyond what Hg concentration and speciation analyses alone can provide. These studies are largely divided into two groups: (i) controlled experiments investigating fractionation of Hg isotopes and refining too

Selenium and stable mercury isotopes provide new insights into mercury toxicokinetics in pilot whales.

High exposures of mammalian species to inorganic mercury (HgII) and methylmercury (MeHg) have been associated with adverse effects on behavior and reproduction. Different mammalian species exhibit varying responses to similar external exposure levels, reflecting potential differences in Hg toxicokinetics. Here, we use Hg stable isotopes, total Hg, MeHg and selenium (Se) concentrations measured in multiple tissues of North Atlantic pilot whales (Globicephala melas) to investigate processes affecting the distribution and accumulation of HgII and MeHg. We find that simple mixing of two distinct i

Isotopic and chemical characteristics of mercury in organs and tissues of fish in a mercury-polluted lake: Evidence for fractionation of mercury isotopes by physiological processes.

Organs and tissues of whitefish and trout from mercury (Hg)-polluted Lake Ontario were analyzed for Hg isotopes, methylmercury (CH3 Hg+ ), and inorganic Hg to investigate possible mass-dependent fractionation (MDF) and mass-independent fractionation (MIF) of Hg isotopes by physiological processes of the fish. Isotope signatures of different body parts were defined by δ-values of 198 Hg/202 Hg, 199 Hg/202 Hg, 200 Hg/202 Hg, and 201 Hg/202 Hg ratios and by Δ-values representing effects of MIF on 199 Hg/202 Hg and 201 Hg/202 Hg ratios. The research yielded the following evidence for MDF and MIF,

Assessing sources of human methylmercury exposure using stable mercury isotopes.

Seafood consumption is the primary route of methylmercury (MeHg) exposure for most populations. Inherent uncertainties in dietary survey data point to the need for an empirical tool to confirm exposure sources. We therefore explore the utility of Hg stable isotope ratios in human hair as a new method for discerning MeHg exposure sources. We characterized Hg isotope fractionation between humans and their diets using hair samples from Faroese whalers exposed to MeHg predominantly from pilot whales. We observed an increase of 1.75‰ in δ(202)Hg values between pilot whale muscle tissue and Faroese

Synchronous changes in mercury stable isotopes and compound-specific amino acid nitrogen isotopes in organisms through food chains.

The relationship between stable isotope of mercury (Hg, Δ199Hg and δ202Hg) and compound-specific nitrogen isotope of amino acids (CSIA-AA, δ15NGlu and δ15NPhe) remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated bird species and their prey in an abandoned Hg mining area, southern China to elucidate these correlations for a better understanding of Hg sources, biological transfer, accumulation and amplification through food chains. Our findings revealed distinct isotopic patterns: Δ199Hg showed a positive correlation with δ15NGlu, indicating trophic transfer processes, while a negative cor

Ecological Traits of Fish for Mercury Biomonitoring: Insights from Compound-Specific Nitrogen and Stable Mercury Isotopes.

We coupled compound-specific isotopic analyses of nitrogen (N) in amino acids (δ15NGlu, δ15NPhe) and mercury stable isotopes (δ202Hg, Δ199Hg) to quantify ecological traits governing the concentration, variability, and source of Hg in largemouth bass (LB) and pike gudgeon (PG) across four rivers, South Korea. PG displayed uniform Hg concentration (56-137 ng/g), trophic position (TPcorrected; 2.6-3.0, n = 9), and N isotopes in the source amino acid (δ15NPhe; 7-13‰), consistent with their specialist feeding on benthic insects. LB showed wide ranges in Hg concentration (45-693 ng/g), TPcorrected (

Stable mercury isotopes as a decision-support tool for public health.

Widespread mercury exposure remains a critical global health challenge, particularly in regions affected by artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM). Conventional biomonitoring documents "body burden," it often fails to pinpoint specific environmental sources, hindering targeted public health interventions. This viewpoint article proposes reframing mercury stable isotope analysis as a decision-support tool within existing public health workflows. Using Suriname as an illustrative case, we demonstrate how isotopic "fingerprints" resolve complex exposure pathways that concentration data alon

Mercury isotopic evidence for the importance of particles as a source of mercury to marine organisms.

The origin of methylmercury in pelagic fish remains unclear, with many unanswered questions regarding the production and degradation of this neurotoxin in the water column. We used mercury (Hg) stable isotope ratios of marine particles and biota to elucidate the cycling of methylmercury prior to incorporation into the marine food web. The Hg isotopic composition of particles, zooplankton, and fish reveals preferential methylation of Hg within small (< 53 µm) marine particles in the upper 400 m of the North Pacific Ocean. Mass-dependent Hg isotope ratios (δ202Hg) recorded in small particles ove

Mercury Stable Isotopes Reveal Influence of Foraging Depth on Mercury Concentrations and Growth in Pacific Bluefin Tuna.

Pelagic ecosystems are changing due to environmental and anthropogenic forces, with uncertain consequences for the ocean's top predators. Epipelagic and mesopelagic prey resources differ in quality and quantity, but their relative contribution to predator diets has been difficult to track. We measured mercury (Hg) stable isotopes in young (<2 years old) Pacific bluefin tuna (PBFT) and their prey species to explore the influence of foraging depth on growth and methylmercury (MeHg) exposure. PBFT total Hg (THg) in muscle ranged from 0.61 to 1.93 μg g-1 dw (1.31 μg g-1 dw ±0.37 SD; 99% ± 6% MeHg)

Mercury Stable Isotopes in Ornithogenic Deposits As Tracers of Historical Cycling of Mercury in Ross Sea, Antarctica.

Production of methylmercury (MeHg) in ocean waters and its bioaccumulation in marine organisms are critical processes controlling the fate and toxicity of mercury (Hg). However, these processes are not well understood in the Antarctic, where high levels of MeHg are observed in the subsurface ocean (100-1000 m). We explored the use of Hg stable isotope compositions in historical and modern biological deposits as a new approach for discerning Hg sources and tracing MeHg cycling in the ocean and bioaccumulation in marine biota. We found similar mass independent isotope fractionation (MIF) of Hg b

Isotopic fractionation of mercury induced by reduction and ethylation.

Isotope ratio measurements characterizing (202)Hg/(200)Hg in NIST SRM 3133 Mercury Standard Solution were undertaken by multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry employing NIST SRM 997 Tl for mass bias correction by use of the slope and the intercept obtained from a natural logarithmic plot of each session of measurements of (202)Hg/(200)Hg against (205)Tl/(203)Tl. The calculated value of 1.285333 +/- 0.000192 (mean and one standard deviation, n = 40) for the mass bias corrected (202)Hg/(200)Hg was then used for mass bias correction of other Hg isotope pairs. Mercury stable isotopes in sediments and largemouth bass from Florida lakes, USA.

Humans and wildlife can be exposed to mercury (Hg) through the consumption of fish with elevated concentrations of methylmercury (MeHg). Studies have shown that increased atmospheric deposition of Hg often leads to increased MeHg concentrations in aquatic organisms. However, depending on the ecosystem characteristics, reductions in Hg emissions may not always lead to immediate decreases in fish MeHg concentrations. Measurements of natural abundance Hg stable isotope ratios may enable a better understanding of these complex relationships. To gain insight into the sources of Hg to sport fish in

Mercury speciation and stable isotopes in emperor penguins: First evidence for biochemical demethylation of methylmercury to mercury-dithiolate and mercury-tetraselenolate complexes.

Apex marine predators, such as toothed whales and large petrels and albatrosses, ingest mercury (Hg) primarily in the form of methylmercury (MeHg) via prey consumption, which they detoxify as tiemannite (HgSe). However, it remains unclear how lower trophic level marine predators, termed mesopredators, with elevated Hg concentrations detoxify MeHg and what chemical species are formed. To address this need, we used high energy-resolution X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy paired with nitrogen (N) and Hg stable isotopes to identify the chemical forms of Hg, Hg sources, and species-

Tracing mercury sources and transfer pathways in Pacific and Atlantic Ocean tuna and billfish using mercury stable isotopes.

Tuna and billfish indicates Hg and MeHg accumulation through marine food webs, yet the causes of interspecies and interoceanic variation remain unclear. This study analyzed THg, MeHg, and Hg isotopes in seven tuna and billfish species from the Pacific and Atlantic, revealing bioaccumulation pattern in top marine predators. Blue marlin (a kind of billfish) showed significantly higher THg concentrations (1824 ± 1558 ng g-1 ww) and lower MeHg/THg ratios (28.6 ± 17.3 %) compared to other species. BAFs estimated via Monte Carlo simulations revealed species-specific differences, with MeHg values 16-

Distribution of mercury species and mercury isotope ratios in soils and river suspended matter of a mercury mining area.

Mercury (Hg) released by mining activities can be dispersed in the environment, where it is subject to species transformations. Hg isotope ratios have been used to track sources in Hg contaminated areas, although it is unclear to what extent variations in δ-values are attributed to distinct Hg species. Hg was mined as Hg sulphide (cinnabar) in Idrija, Slovenia for centuries. Sediments are loaded with mining-residues (cinnabar and calcine), whereas contaminated soils mainly contain Hg bound to natural organic matter (NOM-Hg) related to atmospheric Hg deposition. Hg released from soils and sedim
