Temporary Thyroid Dysfunction and Catecholamine Excess Due to Mercury Poisoning in 6 Cases.

OBJECTIVE: Mercury poisoning is a condition with multiple-organ dysfunction that has effects on the central nervous system, gastrointestinal system, cardiovascular system, skin, lungs, and kidneys. It can be fatal or may result in sequelae such as neurological disturbances, if treated late or left untreated. The endocrinological effects of mercury exposure are not well-known. We aimed to evaluate patients with mercury poisoning. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 6 cases of mercury poisoning from 3 families were included in the study. Clinical, laboratory, and follow-up data were recorded. RE

Pathology of human organic mercury poisoning: Lessons from an autopsy case.

We had an opportunity to perform a general autopsy of a case with chronic organic mercury toxicosis in 2017. He had been engaged in synthesizing a variety of organic mercury compounds throughout the four years from 1966 and developed chronic organic mercury poisoning in 1969. Almost forty years on, he still remained to complain of persistent paresthesia at finger tips and tongue, and of narrowed visual field. Neurological examinations clarified a rise of two-point discrimination thresholds, a systemic increase of touch thresholds, constriction of the visual field caused by general visual depre

[The toxic effect of mercury in occupational exposure].

The paper addresses the problems of environmental and occupational exposures to mercury compounds. Mercury and its compounds are very toxic. Occupational exposure and environmental pollution are the major sources of hazard to human health. Metallic mercury evaporates at room temperature producing inorganic and organic compounds, and forms amalgams with many metals. In more than 50 professions, workers may be exposed to mercury, particularly in the mining and chemical industries and in agriculture. Occupational poisoning is rarely acute but it is usually chronic. The symptoms result from the da

A Brazilian Minamata disease? Neurologists must be aware of mercury exposure and intoxication.

Mercury intoxication poses a significant challenge and growing threat to public health, particularly in the Amazon region. Despite a known history of neurological damage, as evidenced by Japan's Minamata disease, mercury intoxication remains underdiagnosed in Brazil. This review underscores the need for increased clinical awareness among neurologists, as mercury exposure has been linked to over 250 neurological symptoms, including cognitive impairment, cerebellar ataxia, peripheral neuropathy, and psychiatric disturbances. The Indigenous and riverside populations in the Amazon present a high p

Evaluation of mass mercury poisoning cases occurring in a center in Türkiye: symptomatology, treatment methods, and follow-up processes.

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic heavy metal with extensive applications. In children, mercury exposure often occurs inadvertently through laboratories, thermometers, or fluorescent lamps. Inhalation of elemental mercury can affect the central nervous system and urinary system. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent severe complications. A retrospective evaluation was conducted on 82 pediatric cases of mercury poisoning who presented to Bingöl State Hospital on January 15, 2020. Blood and urine mercury levels were measured. Patients with mercury levels > 10 μg/L received intravenous treat

Environmental exposure to mercury and its toxicopathologic implications for public health.

Mercury is a toxic and hazardous metal that occurs naturally in the earth's crust. Natural phenomena such as erosion and volcanic eruptions, and anthropogenic activities like metal smelting and industrial production and use may lead to substantial contamination of the environment with mercury. Through consumption of mercury in food, the populations of many areas, particularly in the developing world, have been confronted with catastrophic outbreaks of mercury-induced diseases and mortality. Countries such as Japan, Iraq, Ghana, the Seychelles, and the Faroe Islands have faced such epidemics, w

Environmental mercury and its toxic effects.

Mercury exists naturally and as a man-made contaminant. The release of processed mercury can lead to a progressive increase in the amount of atmospheric mercury, which enters the atmospheric-soil-water distribution cycles where it can remain in circulation for years. Mercury poisoning is the result of exposure to mercury or mercury compounds resulting in various toxic effects depend on its chemical form and route of exposure. The major route of human exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) is largely through eating contaminated fish, seafood, and wildlife which have been exposed to mercury through in

Rethinking the Minamata Tragedy: What Mercury Species Was Really Responsible?

Industrial release of mercury into the local Minamata environment with consequent poisoning of local communities through contaminated fish and shellfish consumption is considered the classic case of environmental mercury poisoning. However, the mercury species in the factory effluent has proved controversial, originally suggested as inorganic, and more recently as methylmercury species. We used newly available methods to re-examine the cerebellum of historic Cat 717, which was fed factory effluent mixed with food to confirm the source. Synchrotron high-energy-resolution fluorescence detection-

Mercury poisoning as a cause of intracranial hypertension.

Mercury poisoning is a rare but fatal toxicologic emergency. Neurologic manifestations involving the central nervous system are seen usually with chronic mercury intoxication. The most commonly seen complaints are headache, tremor, impaired cognitive skills, weakness, muscle atrophy, and paresthesia. Here, we present a male patient who was chronically exposed to elemental mercury and had papilledema and intracranial hypertension without parenchymal lesion in the central nervous system. A 12-year-old male patient was referred to our emergency room because of severe fatigue, generalized muscle p

Metals and Paraoxonases.

The paraoxonases (PONs) are a three-gene family which includes PON1, PON2, and PON3. PON1 and PON3 are synthesized primarily in the liver and a portion is secreted in the plasma, where they are associated with high-density lipoproteins (HDLs), while PON2 is an intracellular enzyme, expressed in most tissues and organs, including the brain. PON1 received its name from its ability to hydrolyze paraoxon, the active metabolite of the organophosphorus (OP) insecticide parathion, and also more efficiently hydrolyzes the active metabolites of several other OPs. PON2 and PON3 do not have OP-esterase a

A Child with elemental mercury poisoning and unusual brain MRI findings.

Mercury vapor poisoning is a serious and potentially fatal problem. Neurological manifestations involving the central nervous system are seen with chronic mercury intoxication. We present the case of a 10-year-old child who demonstrated acrodynia, seizures, and visual impairment following 20 days of exposure to elemental mercury at home. The initial blood mercury concentration was 27.7 microg/L (normal <2 microg/L) and the initial 24-hour urine mercury concentration was 34.4 microg/L (normal =10 microg/L). After 9 months of treatment with D-penicillamine, the patient's clinical condition, bioc

Acute onset parkinsonism after consumption of traditional Chinese medicine: A cause for vigilance.

Mercury poisoning is a rare yet critical toxicological emergency, typically associated with chronic exposure. This case report details the unusual presentation of acute parkinsonism in a 66-year-old woman who had been ingesting black pills, an unidentified kind of traditional Chinese medicine, obtained from a pirate radio source. The patient displayed symptoms such as acute onset frequent falls, unsteady gait, and slow movements, prompting a detailed medical examination. The patient's neurological assessment revealed classic parkinsonian features, including mask face, cogwheel rigidity, and br

Neurotoxic effects of low-level methylmercury contamination in the Amazonian Basin.

Many studies have demonstrated mercury contamination in the Amazonian ecosystem, particularly in fish, a dietary mainstay of populations in this region. The present study focused on potential health effects of this low-level methylmercury exposure. The study was carried out in a village on the Tapajós River, a tributary of the Amazon, on 91 adults inhabitants (15-81 years), whose hair mercury levels were inferior to 50 mu/g. Performance on a neurofunctional test battery and clinical manifestations of nervous system dysfunction were examined in relation to hair mercury concentrations. Near visu

Metal chelators and neurotoxicity: lead, mercury, and arsenic.

This article reviews the clinical use of the metal chelators sodium 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanesulfonate (DMPS), meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), and calcium disodium edetate (CaEDTA, calcium EDTA) in overexposure and poisonings with salts of lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and arsenic (As). DMSA has considerably lower toxicity than the classic heavy metal antagonist BAL (2,3-dimercaptopropanol) and is also less toxic than DMPS. Because of its adverse effects, CaEDTA should be replaced by DMSA as the antidote of choice in treating moderate Pb poisoning. Combination therapy with BAL and CaEDTA wa

Recent advances in evaluation of health effects on mercury with special reference to methylmercury-A minireview.

Mercury is a metal that has long been used because of its many advantages from the physical and chemical points of view. However, mercury is very toxic to many life forms, including humans, and mercury poisoning has repeatedly been reported. The main chemical forms of mercury are elemental mercury (Hg(0)), divalent mercury (Hg(2+)) and methylmercury (CH(3)-Hg(+)), the toxicities and metabolisms of which differ from each other. Methylmercury is converted from divalent mercury and is a well-known neurotoxicant, having been identified as the cause of Minamata disease. It bioaccumulates in the env
