Learning from facultative CAM plant Mesembryanthemum Crystallinum: Molecular mechanisms for climate-smart agriculture.

Global population growth and frequent episodes of drought pose significant challenges to agricultural sustainability, necessitating the development of crops with enhanced stress adaptability and water-use efficiency (WUE). Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) is a specialized photosynthetic pathway that improves plant drought tolerance and WUE by diurnal stomatal closure and nocturnal CO2 assimilation. The facultative CAM species Mesembryanthemum crystallinum (common ice plant) has become a key model for studying the reversible transition from C3 photosynthesis to CAM under salt or drought stres

Neuroprotective and neurorestorative properties of Mesembryanthemum tortuosum in a Parkinson's disease zebrafish larvae model.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterised by the loss of dopaminergic neurons, resulting in reduced dopamine levels in the brain. The exact cause of dopaminergic neuron loss remains unknown but factors such as increased oxidative stress (OS), neuroinflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction have been implicated in the progression of the disease. The behavioural and molecular repertoire of PD can be modelled in zebrafish larvae using a neurotoxin, 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA). Currently, there is no cure for PD, however, medicinal plants such as Mesembryanthemum tor

Development and Characterization of Mesembryanthemum crystallinum L. Extract-Loaded Phytosomes for Enhanced Delivery of Antioxidant Compounds.

M. crystallinum is an edible halophytic succulent plant rich in phenolic compounds with potential pharmaceutical applications. However, it is known that these phytocompounds generally present low absorption, which hinders their direct use in formulations. Therefore, delivery systems, such as phytosomes, can be regarded as a potential strategy to overcome this disadvantage. This study aimed, for the first time, to prepare extracts from the ice plant using different solvents and to incorporate them into phytosomes. Physicochemical characterization of these phytosomes, their antioxidant activity,

Transcript profiling of salinity stress responses by large-scale expressed sequence tag analysis in Mesembryanthemum crystallinum.

The common ice plant, Mesembryanthemum crystallinum, is a halophytic (salt-loving) member of the Aizoaceae, which switches from C3 photosynthesis to Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) when exposed to salinity or water-deficit stress. CAM is a metabolic adaptation of photosynthetic carbon fixation that improves water use efficiency by shifting net CO2 uptake to the night, thereby reducing transpirational water loss. To improve our understanding of the molecular genetic underpinnings and control mechanisms for Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) and other salinity stress response adaptations, a t

Mesembryanthemum crystallinum -guided green synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles with selective anticancer activity via ROS-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction.

Green synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) using Mesembryanthemum crystallinum L. (M. crystallinum), a halophytic plant adapted to saline environments of North Sinai, Egypt, offers a sustainable nanofabrication strategy with inherent therapeutic potential. High-resolution LC-ESI-QTOF-MS metabolomic profiling identified 13 major phytochemicals in the ethanolic leaf extract, dominated by citramalate (peak area 31,601), L-phenylalanine (30,377), and stress-responsive organic acids, reflecting the plant's halophytic adaptation. These redox-active compounds templated the biosynthesis of

The Effects of Light, Salt, and Osmotic Stress on Mesembryanthemum tortuosum Growth and Mesembrine-Type Alkaloid Production In Vitro.

Mesembryanthemum tortuosum is a valuable South African medicinal plant. A wide range of pharmacological and therapeutic actions have been ascribed to the plants' mesembrine-type alkaloids. Alkaloids are naturally produced in minute quantities in plants; however, production is often increased in stress conditions. This study aimed to determine the effects of abiotic stress on M. tortuosum growth and mesembrine-type alkaloid production. Light (0, 8, 16, and 24 h), salt (0, 50, 100, and 200 μM NaCl), and osmotic stress (0, 25, 50, and 100 g L-1 polyethylene glycol; PEG) were applied to M. tortuos

Effect of Na, K and Ca Salts on Growth, Physiological Performance, Ion Accumulation and Mineral Nutrition of Mesembryanthemum crystallinum.

Mesembryanthemum crystallinum L. is an obligatory halophyte species showing optimum growth at elevated soil salinity levels, but the ionic requirements for growth stimulation are not known. The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of sodium, potassium and calcium in the form of chloride and nitrate salts on the growth, physiological performance, ion accumulation and mineral nutrition of M. crystallinum plants in controlled conditions. In a paradoxical way, while sodium and potassium had comparable stimulative effect on plant growth, the effect of calcium was strongly negative ev

Drought does not induce crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) but regulates photosynthesis and enhances nutritional quality of Mesembryanthemum crystallinum.

Physiology and nutritional quality of a facultative CAM plant Mesembryanthemum crystallinum under drought stress alone are poorly understood. To induce drought, M. crystallinum was cultured aeroponically with different nutrient spraying intervals such as 5, 30, 60 and 240 min. The long spraying interval such as 240 min resulted in lower mass of root and shoot, shorter total root length with less tips and smaller surface area, compared to short interval of 5 min. Grown under the longest spraying interval of 240 min, M. crystallinumalso had significantly higher leaf dry matter content but lower

Effects of Cd2+ on K+, Ca2+ and N uptake in two halophytes Sesuvium portulacastrum and Mesembryanthemum crystallinum: consequences on growth.

One of the limits of Cd2+-phytoextraction is the high toxicity of this metal to plants. Growth restriction, chlorosis and necrosis are usually accompanied with a large disturbance of the uptake of essential elements. This work aims to study the effects of cadmium (Cd2+) on potassium (K+), calcium (Ca2+) and nitrogen (N) acquisition, and their consequences on growth in two halophytes species: Sesuvium portulacastrum and Mesembryanthemum crystallinum. Seedlings were grown for 30 days in split-root conditions. One half of the root system was immersed in complete nutrient solution (Basal medium (B
