MR angiography (MRA) provides a versatile, radiation-free approach for evaluation of the mesenteric vasculature offering contrast-enhanced and noncontrast techniques tailored to clinical needs. Advances in hardware, pulse sequences, acceleration methods, and contrast agents have improved spatial and temporal resolution and diagnostic confidence. Mesenteric MRA can be used for vascular mapping, abdominal organ transplant evaluation and assessment of dynamic vascular compression syndromes, chronic mesenteric ischemia, vasculitis, vasculopathy, and mesenteric aneurysms. This article provides a co

BACKGROUND: We report the results of our single center series of patients with chronic mesenteric ischemia (CMI) to determine the role of stenting in the management of patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients with CMI treated endovascularly with stent revascularisation from January 2008 to January 2011.CMI diagnosis was made according to clinical symptoms, including postprandial abdominal pain, food fear, and weight loss. Additionally, the diagnosis was confirmed by duplex ultrasonography and/or computed tomography angiography and/or contrast-enhanced magnetic

We have reported the case of a critically ill 17-year-old girl who had an evolving gastrointestinal infarction when she came to our institution 11 months before she died. After surgical revascularization, biopsy of the superior mesenteric artery showed FMD. We interviewed and examined all close consanguineous relatives and found abdominal bruits in the patient's younger sister and mother. Arteriograms showed total occlusion of the celiac and superior mesenteric arteries in the sister, and a subtotal celiac occlusion in the mother. Postprandial abdominal pain and constipation in the sister prom

Small elevations in external K+ hyperpolarize and dilate small cerebral arteries. The hyperpolarization and dilation to K+ are blocked by barium (less than 0.1 mM). Since membrane hyperpolarization appears to be an important mechanism for dilation of these small cerebral arteries, we investigated the effects of the hyperpolarizing vasodilators, cromakalim and pinacidil, on isolated pressurized rat cerebral arteries (diameter of 158 +/- 5 microns at 50% of the systolic blood pressure). Cromakalim and pinacidil, which are potent relaxants of a variety of muscle types, were without effect on post

PURPOSE: Chronic mesenteric ischemia (CMI) is a rare disease that progresses with acute mesenteric ischemia, along with high mortality. How to choose the appropriate surgical method and the artery which should be opened first is the key to the treatment.
CASE REPORT: In this study, we successively used vascular bypass and endovascular therapy to treat a case of complex chronic mesenteric ischemia.
CONCLUSION: For mesenteric ischemic disease, the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) should be opened preferentially. Arterial bypass or interventional therapy can be used, or both can be combined, to

Median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS) is caused by extrinsic compression of the celiac axis leading to postprandial epigastric abdominal pain, weight loss, and vomiting. The condition is most often identified in young women, and it is a controversial, unusual cause of chronic mesenteric ischemia. Rarely, the median arcuate ligament can compress the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) in addition to the celiac artery. We present a case of MALS in a young female patient with chronic abdominal pain resulting from external compression of not only the celiac artery but also the SMA. This patient was

The vegetal alkaloid toxin veratridine (VTD) is a selective voltage-gated Na+ (NaV) channel activator, widely used as a pharmacological tool in vascular physiology. We have previously shown that NaV channels, expressed in arteries, contribute to vascular tone in mouse mesenteric arteries (MAs). Here, we aimed to better characterize the mechanisms of action of VTD using mouse cecocolic arteries (CAs), a model of resistance artery. Using wire myography, we found that VTD induced vasorelaxation in mouse CAs. This VTD-induced relaxation was insensitive to prazosin, an α1-adrenergic receptor antago

OBJECTIVE: Endothelial and smooth muscle cells must communicate with one another to regulate arterial diameter. A key structure driving heterocellular communication is the endothelial projection, a thin extension that crosses the internal elastic lamina (IEL) making contact with smooth muscle. This study sought to define the precise structural composition of endothelial projections in the mesenteric circulation.
METHODS: Third- and fourth-order mesenteric arteries from hamster were prepared for electron microscopy. Electron tomographic approaches were used to generate 3-D compositional models

Celiac trunk is the first ventral branch of the abdominal aorta. It usually terminates by giving three branches; the common hepatic artery, the left gastric artery and the splenic artery. We report a rare variation of the branching pattern of the celiac trunk. The Celiac trunk divided into two branches; left gastric artery and splenicogastroduodenal trunk. The splenico-gastroduodenal trunk divided into splenic and gastroduodenal arteries. The superior mesenteric artery and hepatic artery took origin from a common hepato-mesenteric trunk. The hepatic artery had a winding course around the porta

Because of the low ischemia tolerance of abdominal organs and the comorbidities of patients with abdominal ischemic syndromes, complications after the reconstruction of visceral arteries are often severe and associated with a significant mortality rate. The possible complications after interventions on the visceral arteries and their treatment are presented. Endovascular procedures have gained an increasingly important role in many primary interventions as well as in the treatment of complications.

AIMS: To investigate capsaicin-induced vasodilation in the diabetic mesenteric arteries.
METHODS: A diabetic rat model was established by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin after a 12-h fast. At 12 weeks post-injection, the third branch of the mesenteric artery was dissected out and prepared for vascular reactivity assessment. Capsaicin, capsazepine, N(ω)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride (L-NAME), sodium nitroprusside (SNP), calcitonin gene-related peptide 8-37 (CGRP8-37), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), and substance P (SP) were added to investigate subsequent alt

There is no specific duplex ultrasound (DUS) criteria for the diagnosis of inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) stenosis. This study will define the optimal duplex velocity values with the best overall accuracy (OA) in detecting ≥50% stenosis of the IMAs. Eighty-five IMAs with both DUS and mesenteric arteriography were analyzed. Eighty-five IMAs were examined: 45 were normal, 12 with <50% stenosis, eight with ≥50-69% stenosis and 15 with ≥70% stenosis (including occlusion) based on angiography. The mean peak systolic velocities (PSVs) for a normal IMA, <50% and ≥50% stenosis was 105, 215 and 392 c

Symptomatic mesenteric circulatory disorders are potentially life-threatening diseases with an increasing frequency due to the demographic population development. Renal artery stenosis is a well accepted cause of hypertension or at least deterioration of blood pressure control as well as the cause of a progressive course of renal insufficiency if of an atherosclerotic nature. Further consequences of renal artery stenosis, such as left ventricle hypertrophy and hypertensive encephalopathy are topics of recent research. Due to progress in percutaneous techniques during the last decade interventi

Clostridium ramosum, despite being a common enteric bacterium, is not commonly identified as the cause of pathologic infections in humans. It was first identified by Veillion and Zuber in 1898 from a patient with pulmonary gangrene and appendicitis. After performing an extensive literature search of major databases, only a few cases of pathologic C. ramosum infection were found in the medical literature. In this piece of work, we add to existing research by presenting a case report of an 83-year-old female who presented with abdominal pain, fever, and shortness of breath, requiring ICU admissi

Retrograde superior mesenteric artery stenting (ROMS) represents a significant development in the treatment of acute mesenteric ischemia. Compared to traditional surgical mesenteric bypass, ROMS is a less invasive technique that avoids many complications associated with emergent mesenteric bypass. This case report illustrates that retrograde superior mesenteric artery (SMA) stenting is an option for the treatment of acute mesenteric ischemia for patients in extremis.

Chronic mesenteric ischemia (CMI) is mostly the result of atherosclerotic occlusive processes of unpaired mesenteric arteries. Operative procedures are preferred in cases of occlusion of a long vessel segments and/or highly calcified stenoses near the ostium. Frequently, bypasses are constucted from the aorta to visceral arteries and autologous veins should be preferred. Due to atherosclerotic alterations aortic bypass anastomoses are difficult and prone to complications. Based on case descriptions a surgical technique is presented that simplifies the aortovisceral artery bypass procedure. In

BACKGROUND: Ischemia of intestinal organs is a main cause of complications in surgical intensive care patients. Changes in the tonus of arteries contributing to vascular resistance play an important role in the determination of blood flow and thus oxygen supply of various abdominal organs. It is generally acknowledged that hypoxia itself is able to alter arterial tonus and thus blood flow.
METHODS: The present study compared the effects of various degrees of hypoxia on second-order mesenteric arteries from male C57BL/6J mice. After vessel isolation and preparation, we assessed vessel diameter
