Mesocestoides vogae Infection in Dogs: Confusion with Echinococcosis.

We describe six independent cases of Mesocestoides infection in dogs presenting with diarrhea. Between November 2022 and August 2024, we were contacted by veterinarians regarding the identification of a species of small tapeworm excreted in dog feces. The veterinarians suspected the organism was Echinococcus multilocularis and believed it should be reported to health centers as a notifiable disease. Segmented and unsegmented worms, approximately 600 to 1,400 µm in length, were recovered from fecal samples. Microscopically, the worms had four suckers on the scolex but no rostellum. Subsequent m

Contact between Mesocestoides vogae tetrathyridia induces their division.

Mesocestoides vogae is a cestode of the order Cyclophyllidea, and its second intermediate hosts are mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles. The parasite forms a tetrathyridium in the second intermediate host and multiplies asexually, sometimes to the point of filling the host's abdominal cavity. Proliferated tetrathyridium may cause lethal conditions in the host. During the asexual multiplication period, the scolex first replicates into two and then divides into two worms. In this study, to investigate the factors that promote the replication, tetrathyridia were cultured under various in vit

Occurrence of Mesocestoides canislagopodis (Rudolphi, 1810) (Krabbe, 1865) in mammals and birds in Iceland and its molecular discrimination within the Mesocestoides species complex.

The life cycle of Mesocestoides tapeworms (Cestoda: Cyclophyllidea: Mesocestoididae) requires three hosts. The first intermediate host is unknown but believed to be an arthropod. The second intermediate host is a vertebrate. The primary definitive host is a carnivore mammal, or a bird of prey, that eats the tetrathyridium-infected second intermediate host. One representative of the genus, Mesocestoides canislagopodis, has been reported from Iceland. It is common in the arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus) and has also been detected in domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) and cats (Felis domestica). Recentl

Mesocestoides corti intracranial infection as a murine model for neurocysticercosis.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is the most common parasitic disease of the central nervous system (CNS) caused by the larval form of the tapeworm Taenia solium. NCC has a long asymptomatic period with little or no inflammation, and the sequential progression to symptomatic NCC depends upon the intense inflammation associated with degeneration of larvae. The mechanisms involved in these progressive events are difficult to study in human patients. Thus it was necessary to develop an experimental model that replicated NCC. In this review, we describe studies of a murine model of NCC in terms of the rel

Urinary incontinence associated with Mesocestoides vogae infection in a dog.

Peritoneal larval cestodiasis caused by Mesocestoides spp. is a rare infection in dogs. A 6-year-old female dog was presented for veterinary care with urinary incontinence which started 1 year earlier. After performing hematology, ultrasound, and computerized tomography, an exploratory laparotomy revealed canine peritoneal larval cestodiasis (CPLC) with the presence of Mesocestoides vogae (syn. Mesocestoides corti) tetrathyridia confirmed by morphological identification and PCR and DNA sequencing. Parasitic cysts were found around the urinary bladder and appeared to inhibit its normal function

[Canine peritoneal larval cestodosis caused by Mesocestoides spp. larval stages].

In a female dog with unspecific clinical symptoms, sonography detected a hyperechoic mass in the middle abdomen and blood analysis a middle grade systemic inflammatory reaction. Laparotomy revealed a peritoneal larval cestodosis (PLC). The diagnosis of an infection with tetrathyridia of Mesocestoides spp. was confirmed by parasitological examination and molecularbiological analysis. Reduction of the intra-abdominal parasitic load as well as a high dose administration of fenbendazole over 3 months led to a successful treatment which could be documented sonographically and by decreased concentra

First identification of adult Mesocestoides vogae in a domestic dog in Japan.

In recent years, several cases of Mesocestoides vogae infection have been reported in domestic dogs in Japan. These cases typically involved the detection of tetrathyridia and segmented worms with immature proglottids, but not mature adults with gravid proglottids. In this study, mature and gravid proglottids of M. vogae were identified in a domestic dog from Niigata Prefecture. Morphological examination confirmed the parasite to be a Mesocestoides species based on the presence of a well-developed parauterine organ. Further molecular analysis identified the parasite as M. vogae. This is the fi

The influence of Mesocestoides corti on subsequent Angiostrongylus cantonensis infections in mice.

The influence of Mesocestoides corti on subsequent Angiostrongylus cantonensis infection in mice (C57BL/6 and BALB/c) was assessed. Both strains of mice infected with M. corti demonstrated a peak blood eosinophilia at around 3 weeks post-infection (p.i.). C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice primarily infected with M. corti were given A. cantonensis infection 18 days later, but pre-existing M. corti infection did not affect the recovery of intracranial worms of A. cantonensis at day 21 p.i. BALB/c mice with mixed parasite infections showed low morbidity and mortality as compared with mice singly infected w

Cellular and humoral peritoneal immunity to Mesocestoides vogae metacestode infection in mice.

BACKGROUND: Here, Mesocestoides (M.) vogae infection in mice is proposed as a suitable experimental model for studying the immunity in the peritoneal cavity of mice. METHODS: To investigate the kinetics of immune parameters in M. vogae-infected mice, we detected, using flow cytometry, the expression of selected lymphoid and myeloid markers within the peritoneal cell population at day 0, 3, 6, 10, 14, 19, 25, 30 and 35 post-infection. Then, using ELISA, we analyzed the cytokine IFN-γ, TGF-β, IL-4 and IL-10 responses and the levels of anti-M. vogae IgG and IgM antibodies in the peritoneal lavag

Global prevalence of Mesocestoides infections in animals - A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Mesocestoides spp. are zoonotic cestodes found as adults in carnivorous domestic and wild definitive hosts and as metacestodes in several taxa of intermediate hosts. Although several regional studies record its occurrence in different host populations, the global prevalence and patterns of occurrence of Mesocestoides spp. are not fully understood. The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of published literature to estimate the global prevalence of Mesocestoides spp. in major definitive and intermediate host taxa. Records published in English were collect

Transcriptomic profile of two developmental stages of the cestode parasite Mesocestoides corti.

Cestode development involves complex morphological and physiological changes. Here, we performed a differential expression analysis of gene transcripts between two developmental stages of the model cestode Mesocestoides corti. A RNA-seq-based approach was used to compare the transcriptomes of the tetrathyridium (larval, TT) and strobilated worm (ST) stages of the parasite. We found 19,053 transcripts, from which ∼45% were complete matches to genes previously annotated in the available M. corti draft genome sequence, ∼24% were considered novel isoforms, and ∼24% were considered potential novel

Genetic influences upon eosinophilia and resistance in mice infected with Mesocestoides corti.

The genetic influences upon host variation in eosinophilia and resistance to helminth infection, and the relationship between these parameters, was investigated in 9 inbred and 3 hybrid strains of mice infected with Mesocestoides corti. Blood, bone marrow, spleen and peritoneal fluid eosinophilia were far higher in SJL mice than in any other inbred strain. SWR, NIH, C3H and BALB/c mice were high responders to M. corti whereas CBA and 3 congenic strains sharing the B10 background (C57BL/10, B10.S, B10.G) were low responders. Some of the genes for high eosinophil responsiveness appeared to be do

Cell repertoire and proliferation of germinative cells of the model cestode Mesocestoides corti.

The phylum Platyhelminthes shares a unique population of undifferentiated cells responsible for the proliferation capacity needed for cell renewal, growth, tissue repair and regeneration. These cells have been extensively studied in free-living flatworms, whereas in cestodes the presence of a set of undifferentiated cells, known as germinative cells, has been demonstrated in classical morphology studies, but poorly characterized with molecular biology approaches. Furthermore, several genes have been identified as neoblast markers in free-living flatworms that deserve study in cestode models. H

Comparison of different staining methods for determination of viability on Mesocestoides vogae tetrathyridia.

Mesocestoides vogae is widely employed as a model for studying the biology, differentiation, and experimental chemotherapy of cestodes. Currently, there are few techniques to measure the viability of M. vogae metacestodes during pharmacological experiments. The aim of the present work was to evaluate and compare different staining techniques to determine objectively the viability of M. vogae tetrathyridia. Eosin (0.05% w/v), methylene blue (0.01% w/v), propidium iodide (PI, 2 μg/ml), and fluorescein diacetate (FDA, 0.5 μg/ml) solutions were tested against live, heat-killed (cultivated at 65 °C

Suppression of Taenia crassiceps during concurrent infections with Mesocestoides corti in mice.

Parasite burden (by volume) was measured in female mice of three strains given single or concurrent infections of Mesocestoides corti and Taenia crassiceps. Significant suppression of T. crassiceps volume was observed over a range of M. corti inocula and occurred irrespective of whether M. corti was introduced before or after infection with T. crassiceps. Suppression of T. crassiceps volume was greatest with larger inocula of M. corti and with increased duration of M. corti infection. No significant difference was found in the intraperitoneal volume of M. corti from mice given single or simult
