Metalloid compounds as drugs.

The six elements commonly known as metalloids are boron, silicon, germanium, arsenic, antimony, and tellurium. Metalloid containing compounds have been used as antiprotozoal drugs. Boron-based drugs, the benzoxaboroles have been exploited as potential treatments for neglected tropical diseases. Arsenic has been used as a medicinal agent and arsphenamine was the main drug used to treat syphilis. Arsenic trioxide has been approved for the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia. Pentavalent antimonials have been the recommended drug for visceral leishmaniasis and cutaneous leishmaniasis. Tellu

Metabolic interactions between metals and metalloids.

The experimental evidence obtained with laboratory animals which shows that the toxicities of lead, cadmium, and mercury can be increased by deficiencies of certain essential nutrients such as calcium, iron, zinc, and selenium is briefly reviewed. An idealized theoretical model which indicates the possible influence of multiple nutritional deficiencies on the toxicity of a heavy metal is presented. It is suggested that multiple marginal nutritional deficiencies may be of importance in determining the response of humans to the toxic effects of various heavy metal pollutants.

Health concerns of heavy metals and metalloids.

There is a long history and an overwhelming amount of data on the toxicity of heavy metal compounds. Here a brief look is taken of some aspects of the toxicity of lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic, chosen for their historical importance and environmental significance, highlighting especially the contrast between the acute and chronic toxicity of purely inorganic species and their organic derivatives. For further details of other toxic metal compounds, the reader might like to consult "Elements of murder: a history of poison" by John Emsley (2005, Oxford University Press).

Speciation of alkylated metals and metalloids in the environment.

The analytical methodology for speciation of metals and metalloids associated with alkyl groups and biomacromolecules is critically reviewed. Alkylated metals and metalloids are not only known to be produced by microbial methylation within most anaerobic compartments in the environment, but also in the course of enzymatic transformations during human metabolism. Because of the toxicological relevance of these compounds present in trace to ultratrace concentrations, firm species identification and exact quantification are essential. While many instrumental techniques coupling chromatography (GC

Overview and perspectives on metalloid tin cluster chemistry.

Although the first metalloid tin cluster was discovered by Wiberg in 1999, the number of isolated and characterized compounds is still low. However, numerous theoretical calculations indicate that a large variety of compounds are yet to be discovered, thereby suggesting that larger clusters might form a cluster-of-clusters arrangement rather than compact structures. This trend seems to be supported by the largest metalloid tin clusters exhibiting up to 20 tin atoms. In this review, recent results and future possibilities of this fascinating class of metalloid tin cluster compounds are discusse

Dietary compounds as modulators of metals and metalloids toxicity.

A large part of the population is exposed to metals and metalloids through the diet. Most of the in vivo studies on its toxicokinetics and toxicity are conducted by means of exposure through drinking water or by intragastric or intraperitoneal administration of aqueous standards, and therefore they do not consider the effect of the food matrix on the exposure. Numerous studies show that some components of the diet can modulate the toxicity of these food contaminants, reducing their effect on a systemic level. Part of this protective role may be due to a reduction of intestinal absorption and s

Low-level environmental metals and metalloids and incident pregnancy loss.

Environmental exposure to metals and metalloids is associated with pregnancy loss in some but not all studies. We assessed arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead concentrations in 501 couples upon trying for pregnancy and followed them throughout pregnancy to estimate the risk of incident pregnancy loss. Using Cox proportional hazard models, we estimated hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for pregnancy loss after covariate adjustment for each partner modeled individually then we jointly modeled both partners' concentrations. Incidence of pregnancy loss was 28%. In individual pa

Iowa Population Exposures to Metals and Metalloids in Well Water.

Previous Iowa studies suggest low levels and chronic arsenic exposures are associated with prostate cancer. The rural Iowa population heavily relies on private wells for drinking water resources and thus is vulnerable to contaminants such as heavy metals found in well water. The Iowa Biomonitoring Program focuses on determining the extent of chemical exposure through urine biomarker testing in the rural Iowa population which uses private well water as their primary drinking water source. Besides the previously identified high risk of arsenic, the current exposure study expands to a panel of 16

Metal and metalloid immobilization by microbiologically induced carbonates precipitation.

The industrialization and growth of human population has increased the release and accumulation of metals and metalloids in the environment. Bioaccumulation and exposure to these elements have been associated with different types of diseases and cancer, thus looking for alternatives that decrease their bioavailability in the environment is crucial. Microbiologically induced carbonates precipitation (MICP) has been proposed as a potential bioremediation method to immobilize contaminating metals and metalloids. Studies published to date have mainly used ureolytic bacteria, reporting metal(loid)s

Volatilisation of metals and metalloids by the microbial population of an alluvial soil.

In order to assess the microbial contribution to the volatilisation of metal(loid)s by methylation and hydridisation in the environment, we focused on soils of different origin. Here, we describe the biogenic production of volatile metal(loid) species of an alluvial soil with rather low metal(loid) contamination. The production of volatile metal(loid) compounds was monitored in soil suspensions kept under anaerobic conditions over an incubation time of 3 months. In the headspace of the samples, we detected mainly hydrids and methylated derivatives of a broad variety of elements such as arsenic

Essential and Non-Essential Metals and Metalloids and Their Role in Atherosclerosis.

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is becoming more prevalent in the aging developed world and can have significant functional impacts on patients. There is a recent recognition that environmental toxicants such as circulating metals and metalloids may contribute to the pathogenesis of atherosclerotic disease, but the mechanisms are complex. While the broad toxic biologic effects of metals in human systems have been extensively reviewed, the role of non-essential exposure and essential metal aberrancy in PAD specifically is less frequently discussed. This review of the literature describes curr

Polyamines: Rising stars against metal and metalloid toxicity.

Globally, metal/metalloid(s) soil contamination is a persistent issue that affects the atmosphere, soil, water and plant health in today's industrialised world. However, an overabundance of these transition ions promotes the excessive buildup of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and ion imbalance, which harms agricultural productivity. Plants employ several strategies to overcome their negative effects, including hyperaccumulation, tolerance, exclusion, and chelation with organic molecules. Polyamines (PAs) are the organic compounds that act as chelating agents and modulate various physiological,

[Exposure to metals, metalloids and their compounds in heavy metals refining].

BACKGROUND: In the process of heavy metals refining, workers are first of all exposed to metals, metalloids (As, Se) and their compounds. Moreover, they are exposed to sulphuric acid and dusts (about 2% SiO2). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Several dozen workers in two Polish plants were studied (Cu, Pb, Cd, Zn, and Ag refining processes, production of Ni sulphate and production of Se). Cd, Ni, Se, Cu, Pb, As and Ag were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) with graphite tube, whereas ZnO (as Zn) by AAS with air-acetylene flame. Sulphuric acid was determined by the method given in PN-91

Reduction in Placental Metal and Metalloid in Preeclampsia: A Case-Control Study.

Preeclampsia is a primary placental disorder, with impaired placental vascularization leading to uteroplacental hypoperfusion. We aimed to investigate differences in metal and metalloid content between the placentas of women with preeclampsia and healthy controls. This was a case-control study in 63 women with preeclampsia and 113 healthy women. Clinical data were obtained from medical records. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to measure the placental metals and metalloids content. Compared with healthy control subjects, preeclampsia was associated with a signific

The role of roots and rhizosphere in providing tolerance to toxic metals and metalloids.

Human activity and natural processes have led to the widespread dissemination of metals and metalloids, many of which are toxic and have a negative impact on plant growth and development. Roots, as the first point of contact, are essential in endowing plants with tolerance to excess metal(loid) in the soil. The most important root processes that contribute to tolerance are: adaptation of transport processes that affect uptake efflux and long-distance transport of metal(loid)s; metal(loid) detoxification within root cells via conjugation to thiol rich compounds and subsequent sequestration in t

Metals and metalloids in tissues of American alligators in three Florida lakes.

Concentrations of metals and selenium were examined in tissues of American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) from three lakes in central Florida, in one of which alligators have exhibited reproductive or developmental defects. Our overall objective was to determine whether the levels of metals were sufficiently high to confound the association between chlorinated hydrocarbons, which are elevated in eggs and juvenile plasma, and reproductive impairment. The concentrations of all metals were relatively low compared to those reported for alligators from elsewhere in Florida and the southeas

Association between Heavy Metals, Metalloids and Metabolic Syndrome: New Insights and Approaches.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is an important public health issue that affects millions of people around the world and is growing to pandemic-like proportions. This syndrome is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a pathologic condition characterized by abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. Moreover, the etiology of MetS is multifactorial, involving many environmental factors, including toxicant exposures. Several studies have associated MetS with heavy metals exposure, which is the focus of this review. Environmental and/or occupational exposure to

Toxic Metals and Metalloids in Food: Current Status, Health Risks, and Mitigation Strategies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Exposure to toxic metals/metalloids, such as arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb), through food consumption is a global public health concern. This review examines the contamination status of these metals/metalloids in food, assesses dietary intake across different populations, and proposes strategies to reduce metal/metalloid exposures throughout the food chain. RECENT FINDINGS: For the general population, dietary intake of metals/metalloids is generally lower than health-based guidance values. However, for vulnerable populations, such as infants, children, and pregna

A global reconnaissance of particulates and metals/metalloids in untreated drinking water sources.

Metal and metalloid contamination in drinking water sources is a global concern, particularly in developing countries. This study used hollow membrane water filters and metal-capturing polyurethane foams to sample 71 drinking water sources in 22 different countries. Field sampling was performed with sampling kits prepared in the lab at Hope College in Holland, MI, USA. Filters and foams were sent back to the lab after sampling, and subsequent analysis of flushates and rinsates allowed the estimation of suspended solids and metal and other analayte concentrations in source waters. Estimated par
