Hatching asynchrony, survival, and the fitness of alternative adult morphs in Ambystoma talpoideum.

The mole salamander, Ambystoma talpoideum, exhibits both aquatic (gilled) and terrestrial (metamorphosed) adult morphologies. Previous studies have shown the existence of body-size advantages associated with the terrestrial morph in A. talpoideum and other polymorphic salamanders (e.g., A. tigrinum). However, aquatic adult A. talpoideum mature at a younger age and often breed earlier than terrestrial adults. We tested the hypothesis that early maturation and reproduction in aquatic adults increase fitness (irrespective of body size). We reared larval A. talpoideum in mesocosms and varied the t

Effect of mechanical means on the restoration of the limb regenerative ability in metamorphic stages of Bufo regularis Reuss.

Limbs of Bufo regularis REUSS metamorphic stages No. 57, 63 and 66 were transected at the thigh level. Removal of the apical skin cover on the third postoperative day, followed by traumatization after further two days in the limb stumps, was more effective in the enhancement of the regenerative ability than when each one of these procedures was performed independently. Better results were achieved in cases of the preclimactic stage (No. 57) where about 30% of the cases (Series III) developed heteromorphic limb outgrowths having more distal structures as the shank ending with or without toes. Premetamorphic Development of the Phytotelm-Dwelling Toad Dendrophryniscus lauroi (Anura: Bufonidae).

The genus Dendrophryniscus, an early-diverging lineage of Bufonidae endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, includes 17 species of small toads with reproductive habits mostly linked to phytotelmata. Information about premetamorphic development in these species is very scarce, being restricted to observations on embryos of a single species and tadpoles of three. As part of a long-term project on the study of natural history and reproductive biology in Dendrophryniscus lauroi, this contribution describes premetamorphic morphology and development, and discusses the results in the context of wha

Skeletal morphogenesis of the vertebral column of the miniature hylid frog Acris crepitans, with comments on anomalies.

Although the vertebral columns of anurans have received much study in the last 150 years, few detailed descriptions exist of the skeletal morphogenesis of this anatomical unit. Herein, the ontogeny of the vertebral skeleton of the hylid frog Acris crepitans is described based on cleared and double-stained specimens, radiographs, and 3D reconstructions generated from synchrotron microCT scans. The adult axial formula is 1-7-1-1, and the vertebral centra are epichordal and procoelous. The neural arches are nonimbricate, and there is a medial articulation between the laminae of Presacrals I and I

Exposure to nitrate alters the histopathology and gene expression in the liver of Bufo gargarizans tadpoles.

Nitrate is a ubiquitous component in aquatic environment and the concentrations of anthropogenic nitrate-nitrogen (NO3N) can exceed 25 mg/L in surface waters and 100 mg/L in ground waters. The exceed nitrate has adverse effects on survival, development, and metamorphosis of amphibian. Liver is the hub of many biological processes, including lipid metabolism and bile salts secretion. However, there is little information about the effects of nitrate on the liver in amphibians during metamorphosis. In this study, B. gargarizans was exposed to different concentrations of nitrate from embryo to met

Ossification sequence heterochrony among amphibians.

Heterochrony is an important mechanism in the evolution of amphibians. Although studies have centered on the relationship between size and shape and the rates of development, ossification sequence heterochrony also may have been important. Rigorous, phylogenetic methods for assessing sequence heterochrony are relatively new, and a comprehensive study of the relative timing of ossification of skeletal elements has not been used to identify instances of sequence heterochrony across Amphibia. In this study, a new version of the program Parsimov-based genetic inference (PGi) was used to identify s

Teleost fish metamorphosis under the influence of estrogenic hormones: targeting the thyroid axis - a literature review.

Estrogens, whether naturally excreted by humans and livestock or introduced through pharmaceuticals, are endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) with strong estrogenic activity. While their effects on the reproductive functions of teleosts are well-documented, their influence on other vital biological functions such as metamorphosis remains understudied. Teleost metamorphosis represents a critical life stage involving profound morphological, physiological, and behavioral transformations essential for survival. This process is tightly regulated by multiple endocrine factors, with the thyroid axis

Wing expansion functional analysis of ion transport peptide gene in Sogatella furcifera (Horváth) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae).

Ion transport peptide (ITP), a superfamily of arthropod neuropeptides, serves a crucial role in regulating various physiological processes such as diuresis, ecdysis behavior, and wing expansion. However, the molecular characteristics, expression profile, and role of ITP in Sogatella furcifera are poorly understood. To elucidate the characteristics and biological function of ITP in S. furcifera, we employed reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and RNA interference (RNAi) methods. The identified SfITP gene encodes 117 amino acids. The expression of SfITP gradually increased f

Control performance of the Extended Amphibian Metamorphosis Assay with the African clawed frog Xenopus laevis.

The Amphibian Metamorphosis Assay (AMA) was established as a standardized test guideline with the primary purpose of evaluating test materials for potential endocrine activity in the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis of developing African clawed frogs (Xenopus laevis). The Extended Amphibian Metamorphosis Assay (EAMA) is similar to the AMA with a key difference in that the EAMA terminates at a fixed developmental stage (i.e., Nieuwkoop and Faber [NF] stage 62) rather than at the fixed exposure time of the AMA (i.e., 21 days). This study summarizes the control data at NF stage 62 for a total

Effects of polychlorinated biphenyls on metamorphosis of a marine fish Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) in relation to thyroid disruption.

This study examined the influence of environmental concentrations of Aroclor 1254 (10, 100, and 1000ng/L) on metamorphosis of Paralichthys olivaceus, and analyzed the mechanisms in relation to thyroid disruption. Results showed that 100 and 1000ng/L Aroclor 1254 delayed metamorphosis and that 1000ng/L Aroclor 1254 caused abnormal morphology. Thyroxine and triiodothyronine levels in the control group were significantly elevated at metamorphic climax, but treatment with 100 and 1000ng/L delayed the increase in thyroid hormones (THs) and retarded metamorphic processes. In larvae exposed to 1000ng

[Metamorphosis in the Urodelan amphibians: patterns, regulation mechanisms, and evolution].

Patterns of metamorphosis and mechanisms of its regulation in primitive and advanced salamanders are compared. It is found that urodelan evolution was characterised by the following trends: 1) increase in the number of metamorphosing systems; 2) increase in the amplitude of metamorphic transformations of each particular system due to the progressive divergence of the larval and the adult morphology; 3) synchronization of metamorphic transformations and their concentration within a relatively short period of ontogeny; 4) increase in the role of the thyroid hormones (TH) in the regulation of met

The marine sponge, Hymeniacidon sinapium, displays allorecognition of siblings during post-larval settling and metamorphosis to juveniles.

Marine sponges, including the crumb of bread sponge, Hymeniacidon sinapium, display allorejection responses to contact with conspecifics in both experimental and natural settings. These responses have been used to infer immunocompetence in a variety of marine invertebrates. However, larvae and juveniles from several marine sponge species fuse and form chimeras. Some of these chimeras persist, whereas others eventually break down, revealing a period of allogeneic non-responsiveness that varies depending on the species. Alternatively, for H. sinapium, most pairs of sibling post-larvae and juveni

Origin of insect wings, metamorphosis, pupae and the maj or insect orders.

Although most discussions on the origin and evolution of insect wings and metamorphosis have assumed that the ancestors of winged insects were terrestrial, it now seems possible that they were actually aquatic. Changing the basic assumptions affects our interpretations of the origin of metamorphosis and our understanding of insect diversity. It is argued that the ancestors of winged insects were similar to primitive mayflies, developing from aquatic larvae into terrestrial adults, and that metamorphosis originated as an inevitable consequence of an amphibiotic life cycle. It is suggested that

Osteological development of a small and fast metamorphic frog, Microhyla fissipes (Anura, Neobatrachia, Microhylidae).

Describing osteological development is of great importance for understanding vertebrate phenotypic variations, form-functional transitions and ecological adaptations. Anurans exhibit dramatic changes in their morphology, habitat preferences, diet and behaviour between the tadpole and frog stages. However, the anatomical details of their cranial and postcranial development have not been extensively studied, especially in Microhylidae. In this work, we studied the microhylid Microhyla fissipes, commonly known as the ornamented pygmy frog, a small-sized frog with fast metamorphosis. Its osteologi

Metamorphic changes in the vagal innervation to the alimentary tract in the green frog, Rana clamitans (Ranidae).

The alimentary tract of typical anurans shortens extensively at metamorphosis, when the microphagous tadpole transforms into a macrophagous frog. We used methylene blue vital stain and Sihler stain, in conjunction with microdissection, to map the distribution of the gastric branch of the vagus nerve in green frogs (Rana clamitans) before and after metamorphosis. After metamorphosis, terminal divisions of the gastric branch can be observed on the tunica musculosa extending as far as the pylorus. In the tadpole, the gastric branch ends abruptly on the esophagus. The premetamorphic pattern of inn

Effects of Separate and Combined Exposure of Cadmium and Lead on the Endochondral Ossification in Bufo gargarizans.

Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) are ubiquitous in aquatic environments and most studies have examined the potential effects of Cd or Pb alone on aquatic organisms. In the present study, chronic effects of Cd and Pb, alone and in combination, on Bufo gargarizans were investigated by exposing embryos to these contaminants throughout metamorphosis. Significant reductions in body mass and snout-to-vent length were observed in B. gargarizans at Gosner stage 42 (Gs 42) and Gs 46 exposed to a Cd/Pb mixture. Single and combined exposure with Cd and Pb induced histological alterations of the thyroid gland c

Developmental stages of the ballan wrasse from first feeding through metamorphosis: Cranial ossification and the digestive system.

We have described six developmental stages for the ballan wrasse, from the first feeding until the juvenile stage, supported by specific descriptions of cranial ossification, maturation of the digestive tract, and growth-correlated stages. The initial formation and development of bones are closely linked to the functional anatomical structures required for the mechanics of its feeding behavior and ingestion, particularly the jaws and branchial regions involved in opening the mouth and capturing food particles. The overall ontogeny of the cranial structure compares to that of other teleosts. Th

Distinct interhemispheric connectivity at the level of the olfactory bulb emerges during Xenopus laevis metamorphosis.

During metamorphosis, the olfactory system of anuran tadpoles undergoes substantial restructuring. The main olfactory epithelium in the principal nasal cavity of Xenopus laevis tadpoles is associated with aquatic olfaction and transformed into the adult air-nose, while a new adult water-nose emerges in the middle cavity. Impacts of this metamorphic remodeling on odor processing, behavior, and network structure are still unexplored. Here, we used neuronal tracings, calcium imaging, and behavioral experiments to examine the functional connectivity between the epithelium and the main olfactory bu
